GammaTech Debuts the DURABOOK R8300 Fully Rugged Notebook

GammaTech Computer Corp., a major international manufacturer and supplier of innovative notebook and tablet computers, has announced the addition of its latest fully rugged notebook computer, the DURABOOK R8300. The unit is certified to stringent MIL-STD-810G and IP65 specifications, meaning it can withstand the abusive nature of extremely harsh environments, such as those regularly encountered by the military, public safety, and utility sectors.

"It is easy to produce a computer that works well in a climate-controlled environment, where Mother Nature is held at bay," remarked Jen Chen, GammaTech president. "It is something entirely different, however, to engineer a computer to withstand long exposure to wind, dust, rain, and extreme temperatures as well as surviving bumpy rides, drops, and working in sweltering heat or frigid temperatures. Designed specifically for outdoor usage, our new R8300 notebook offers unsurpassed performance, even in the most hostile environments."
Built Rugged for Harsh Environments
The DURABOOK R8300 notebook exceeds or meets the most difficult environmental specifications, ensuring it will operate reliably for years in the most demanding applications. These are: MIL-STD 810G for shock, drop, vibration and temperature; IP65 for water and dust resistance; and MIL-STD 461F, ANSI/ISA 12.12.01 (formerly known as UL1601 - Class 1 Division 2), and ATEX Zone 2 for operation in hazardous locations.

Enriched Performance
The DURABOOK R8300 notebook comes with an Intel 3rd Generation i-Core LV /ULV CPU i-Core i7-3555LE or i-Core i5-3437U mobile processor, providing optimum power consumption, weight, and performance. The unit also includes a mobile Intel QM77 Express Chipset that, among other features, provides integrated USB 3.0, Intel AMT 8.0 with enhanced manageability and security, Intel Rapid Storage Technology with RAID support for enhanced performance, power management, and data protection, Intel Smart Response Technology, and Intel Anti-Theft Technology that can disable a lost or stolen PC and reactivate it without compromise to the system or data. It includes the Windows 7 operating system.

Easy to Read in Sunlight
The R8300 notebook's large 13.3" TFT touch-screen LCD display features direct-sunlight readability, an added plus for workers toiling in bright, mid-day through late-afternoon sun.

Plenty of Memory for Any Field Trip
With its quick-release HDD-storage capability, users can inter-swap either 500 GB or 750 GB HDDs simply by turning a couple knobs. Configurations with solid state drives are also available. Additional storage is provided through a 5.25" Super Multi-Slot type optical disc drive. Two DDR3 SODIMM slots provide 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB of memory each.

Battery Life for a Shift Or More
Its Lithium-Ion battery provides an 8-hour-shift's worth of power, and if duty calls for a longer life, the second-battery design can accommodate another battery that boosts battery life to 12 hours while adding hot swap support.

The Connection Factor
Connection is a key ingredient to a successful mobile computer. The Durabook R8300 offers superior connectivity. Features include: a mini card slot for Wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.0 class 1 combo card; a built-in antenna; one M2 card slot for the WWAN module (Type 3042-S3-B); a built in SIM card slot; a built in WWAN antenna; a GPS module with built-in GPS antenna; and an optional Intel Dual Band Wireless 6235 802.11AGN.

Security Check
System security is provided by both administrator and boot password protection; Absolute Computrace, which allows remote management for continual tracking and securing all endpoints within a single cloud-based console; TPM 1.2; and Kensington lock.

Availability
The GammaTech DURABOOK R8300 notebook will be available Q2 through authorized resellers nationwide and at www.GammaTechUSA.com. All GammaTech computers may be customized for unique customer requirements.

What a strange deal marketing semi-rugged, rugged and full rugged laptops... I'd like to see the official criteria and testing process that defines these different categories.

There are official MIL specs for all those terms, Panasonic does the same. I forget the spec numbers though.
