Sony to ship 150,000 to 200,000 PS3s to the USA for launch

Sony had planned in September to ship 400,000 PlayStation3s on release day in the USA. Unfortunately, Sony may not even ship half that amount. They are now planning ship no more then 200,000 PS3s. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) co-chairman Jack Tretton admitted the launch allocations were more a "target" than a precise logistical statistic. Fortunately, Sony will ship far more as time goes on, and should have shipped 750,000 consoles by the end of 2006. This is a long way from the 2 million Sony had initially planned to sell. In comparison, the Nintendo Wii will ship with the exact amount of units it said it would have, 1.2 million at launch and 4 million by the end of 2006.

Whoa! that's a huge reduction, heard some ppl who preordered their systems at Gamestop got a phone call yesterday to tell them they would have to wait to get their systems, in the mean time they can pick a free used game or DVD. Talk about ownage! :twitch:  :nutkick: :slap:

Pwned. Developers arent going to want to spend money on PS3 exclusives with such a small amount of consoles out there.

Yeah, GameStop is calling some people who pre-ordered them (the last ones to pre-order) to tell them that Sony is shipping less, so their pre-orders are cancelled.

But if you are the person that is planning to sell it on e-bay, there is a much higher resale value...so, it's a plus for them if they were the first ones to pre-order (since they still get their PS3's)

Yeah but all the preorders sold out within a day, and now half of those will be void.

it wouldnt be Sony if they didnt create an artificial demand in every region, this is a purposeful attempt to maitain an artificial high demand and also increase its share price by doing so.

Same here, at first I wanted it, but $600! Damn, so I'm waiting until next holiday season, maybe (hopefully) a price drop. Also, Costco and Sam's Club usually has great bundles, so might go there.

Oh yea I always wait at least a year till the new systems are out not only for the price drop but more, better games.

Games basically make the system...you can have great games for launch, but if you don't have good games for the system later on, it's nothing.

God dammit!

If I was in the US right now id soo want to be in the launch line.
Id gather my stuff and wait outside for 2 days.. what an experience. Being first, theyll probably give me a PS3 for free! Only thing i dont get is how are u supposed to pee, and grab something to eat without loosing ur spot?

I guess ill have to wait for the launch of the Playstation 4.. in 2012.

You know how, you go on with your life and wait a few weeks when large shipments come in. You don't have anything more productive to do than wait in line for a game console?

You dont get it. I care more abt being in line, waiting for it and being part of the launch, than actually having the PS3.. or at least at first.
