AMD Introduces the FirePro W8100 Professional Graphics Card

AMD today launched the AMD FirePro W8100 professional graphics card, enabling new levels of workstation performance delivered by the company's second generation, industry-leading AMD Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture. With nearly 38 times the performance of the closest competing product based on double precision testing, and powered by OpenCL, the AMD FirePro W8100 is designed for the next generation of 4K CAD (Computing Aided Design) and Media and Entertainment (M&E) workflows, engineering analysis and supercomputing applications.

Bolstering the AMD Professional Graphics product family with yet another productive workstation solution, the AMD FirePro W8100 features a best-in-class 8 GB of GDDR5 memory, up to 4.2 TFLOPS of single precision compute performance, and unmatched double precision compute performance of up to 2.1 TFLOPS.

Is it based on Tonga? If yes, then it's a bit odd that the new Tonga generation debuts as a professional product. It would definitely signal a chance in AMD's product strategy.

Without much in the way of spec's I couldn't say if it's Tonga, but I can't see them doing that, however if it was I'm not sure how it a benfit or a determet...

Patriot290/290x are 1/8th DP this is 1/2 DP
Different chips most likely same family.
Please note that Hawaii has a configurable DP rate. On the hardware level Hawaii (290, 290X) is capable of running at 1/2 DP rate.

there is no different chips.
on the die all [put whatever chip codename you like here no matter vendor] chips are same. they become different later when they are tested and accordingly to their capabilities are sorted for different product lines.

Unless you work for AMD you have no evidence to support this claim.
There have till now been no Hawaii chips with 1/2 DP.
Whether this is fused off on the 290/290x firmware controlled or straight out missing cannot be determined.

I do have an ES (pre-production) R9 290X card that is capable of running at 1/2 DP. It is effectively a FirePro W9100, but has a 290X BIOS on it. You can believe me, Hawaii chips (GPUs) can indeed run at 1/2 DP rate, it's just a matter of fuses to enable or disable that feature.
