MSI Teases GeForce GTX 970 Gaming with TwinFrozr V

MSI showed off the first moneyshot render of its GeForce GTX 970 Gaming graphics card. Trailing an earlier leaked render viewed from the top of the card. The new one reveals MSI giving the TwinFrozr V cooler a bold 2-tone cooler shroud, holding a pair of 100 mm fans that ventilate a chunky copper heat-pipe fed aluminium fin stack. MSI could give the GTX 970 a factory-overclock to take advantage of its meaty cooling solution. Based on the 28 nm GM204 silicon, the GeForce GTX 970 is said to feature 1,664 CUDA cores based on the "Maxwell" architecture, 138 TMUs, 32 ROPs, a 256-bit wide memory interface, and 4 GB of memory. It will launch a little later this month.

Very nice aggressive look from this card. I love the new Twin Frozr designs from MSI as they keep on just getting better and better from the eye candy perspective.

If it is priced at ~$400, that would be a very good deal and a shock price. It seems to be $400 for the 970 and $500 for the 980 according to the MSI leak which would be a very good deal and may cause a huge price drop all around. But it is saying priced around that area so we will have to see still...

It's designs like this GPU, and in particular, the "Vortex" from Powercolor that make Me wish that GPU add in Cards where oriented with the Cooler facing Upward , as oppossed to Downward .... Am I the Only one who feels this way? Is there a reason they dont do it that way as well? I cant help but feel there is No obvious reason (atleast to Me) that stands out for this standard design. Heat rises, so one would think that the manufacturers would WANT to vent it upward as well. I cant help but feel like there is some OBVIOUS reason that they DONT do it, and Im gonna feel like an idiot for making this point... o_O oh well.

Well most of those cards are pushing the air down on the PCB and out the sides. If they flipped it the hot air would go back directly into the fan and right back around into the card trying to cool it.

Sadly we cannot see much of those coolers once they are inside the machine. However if you want something like that you can always buy one of those inverted cases that flip the motherboard.

I guess $399/$499 is possible for the GTX 970/980. That's what the Kepler counterparts GTX 670/680 were priced at on release. I'd be a bit surprised if they did though. The GTX 670/680 at those prices had a reference cooler and only 2 GB VRAM.

I got the Gigabyte gtx670 with its windforce cooler at launch from newegg for $399 and I believe either Msi or Powercolor also had also it at reference card prices.

Still pricey for $399, if that's the price it will sell at.
