Japanese Crypto Exchange Coincheck Hacked, Biggest Heist in History of the World

In what amounts (for now) to the biggest heist in the history of the world, Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck, which handles about 3% of the total cryptocurrency transactions, has apparently been on the receiving end of a $500 million hack to its crypto vaults. The heist, which seems to have particularly over the NEM cryptocurrency, took some $532 million worth of the cryptocurrency from the exchanges' coffers. This news comes after Coincheck halted all NEM transaction on its exchange starting this morning, without previous warning, which raised red flags on the NEM investor community and Coincheck users. Additionally, it's being reported that there was an additional $123 million worth of Ripple cryptocurrency taken, as well.

For now, Coincheck has only issued an update saying that "Depositing NEM on Coincheck is currently being restricted. Deposits made to your account will not be reflected in your balance, and we advise all users to refrain from making deposits until the restriction has been lifted", so, there's no confirmation of the heist as of now. However, Nikkei is reporting that Coincheck has reported the theft to the local Financial Services Agency and the police. If confirmed, this is easily the biggest heist in the world's history, and not coincidentally, the biggest in crypto history as well.

Speculative money is a good thing in your eyes?

I don't like seeing anyone losing things by theft, but they should probably know there's better and safer ways of investing money than combining your PC hobby with your money making.

not really relevant.. what is relevant is the obvious glee when a bunch of thieves happen to steal something you dont like..

The whole cryptocurrency market is a scam pure and simple, invented by those who get rich off of it and this is the third or such heist of this kind, don't expect it to be the last, quite frankly I like others can't wait until they all go away.

Sorry, it's mostly reflex from my part, my country suffered a lot thanks to speculative capitals, so I don't look so well to criptocoins.
All thieves are bad, even the "legal/grey" ones.

Honestly, people who blatantly diss fellow forum groups like this aren't exactly my favorite type either.

Korea only banned funding from anonymous bank accounts. But hey, don't let that get in the way of good FUD.

This again is also a web wallet, and no one should story money in these. Again though, don't let that stop a good FUD-session.

Indeed it will never be the last as long as money is held in centralized web wallets.

They should use cryptos actually wallets like it is intended.

As for the rest, you know I don't consider anything that does what it says on the tin a "scam." Crypto qualifies.

Why? it's a difference of opinion, people don't like cryptocurrencies for good reasons, it's a false economy, if anything you should be thankful you've made real money from nothing.... it's anonymised for a reason and most cryptocurrencies are used the world over for illicit means and by criminals because they are anonymous. So you've made some free money out of doing nothing, you should also realise that because you own nothing, there is nothing to steal, as I said, the whole damn thing is a scam and while it stays this way, this type of act will always happen in regards to crypto..

To me cryptocurrency is about as a valuable as counterfeit money. I know in actuality it's worth more for whatever damn reason, but I'll stick to being paid with real currency.

you are a mixed up kind of guy mr frog.. you give me a couple of likes for saying what someone has to say and then go on to say that people that diss fellow members aint your favorite type ether..

i am out of this thread and if i had a little more self respect i should be out of this forum.. the hypocrisy is beginning to smell a little high..

i had a warning a week or so for making a semi joking comment to a crypto hater.. the hater took what i said okay.. but a mod didnt..

i am a miner i attempt to give valid information about mining to those that are interested.. but the Mostly clueless crypto hate stuff that keeps coming out makes it hard to not reply.. i have a feeling that soon i will be forced to leave the forum.. i speak my mind and some will thing that maybe my mind does not belong here.. i aint that good at the two faced hypocrisy stuff..

sorry chaps but i have just spoken my mind again.. he he

I thought you were saying people that diss other members ain't worthy of your respect. In other words, dissing those who diss others (which is fine IMO).

I can take it back if I'm wrong. :p I was particularly refering to the dissing of miners, but gamers qualify too. I was showing agreement with my interpretation of your statement.

I ain't mixed up. Confused? Probably, but consistently so through and through. :)

I have certain mods who like to do that to me whenever I open my mouth, dont take it personally... he knows who he is :peace:

You are a miner and I agree you do try and help other miners out and share your knowledge and experience, that's not a bad thing but you cant think bad of others who hate mining (not neccessarily miners) because what it has done to the GPU industry, and that's not just specualtion, for around 12 months now it's been a fact. This is a tech forum where most people are gamers and the fact lots of people are stuck with 3-4 year old GPU's and can't even afford to upgrade to a new mid-table GPU because of this relatively new craze is fresh in a lot of peoples minds, dont hate the player, hate the game as the saying goes. Also you have made money from mining even though you have invested a lot in hardware so what others think should be an afterthought for you, you're making money, some people arent and you are getting some flak, oh well, money's still coming in ;) carry on.

Uh, no. This is like a drop in the bucket and the best way to pay it back is still to keep mining.

And sorry for that "like" again Trog, I'll find something to compensate with soon enough, no worries.

Divide OverflowEven in the Far East, it's the Wild, Wild West.

Honestly, the internet is the wild wild west moreso than crypto. Don't want your coins stolen? Don't store them on a web accessible service.
