SETI definitely 'found something'.

Since the project's inception, SETI has been searching for alien life in the depths of outer space. When Melinda Kimberly had her laptop stolen, SETI, which was loaded in the background, continued it's search for extraterrestrials. This meant that it continued to link to the SETI main network. Melinda's clever husband used SETI to search for those access attempts, logged the IP addresses of them, and then reported the stolen laptop with it's recent IP addresses to the police. The laptop was recovered with all data intact, and no arrests were made. SETI developers were reportedly very happy that their software "actually found something".

Seti is a waste of time and computational investment, i.e your idle cpu time, much better for the world investing that time in something purposeful on our planet, i.e folding ;)

He left it @ his 'bit on the sides' house, but he must of forgot which 'bit' that was and that is why there was no arrests once it was 'found', because his wife 'Mrs kimberly' would have found out and then seti would have to search for a new home for 'Mr kimberly' :D

I think you misread it, someone stole lady's laptop, husband IP traces it using SETI, police retrieve it....wording changed for easier understanding, I forgot that "coming forward" to the police usually means "turning yourself in" :p.

Heh, said this before here on this note, from one of my FAV. Sci-Fi shows episodes of ANY series, ever, & who's main character(s) I sympathized with... see:

"The Final Exam" - THE OUTER LIMITS (new series)

:)

* The main character, Seth Todtman, says something VERY PROFOUND (& unfortunately, probably very accurate) about that to Martin the Secret Agent/Psychologist/Negotiator/PhD trying to stop him, in regards to WHY we have NOT found alien civilizations... I'll leave it @ that!

APK

P.S.=> Also, on that note? IMO, I think that Alien Cultures that MAY exist, ala UFO's & such, look @ us for awhile & say something along the lines of:

"They are insane, killing one another, full of (what I call) 'virus of the spirit' (from Pandora's box) & ruining their world - KEEP THEM DOWN THERE, via telling their gov't.'s that IF they come out here, & SPREAD THEIR DISEASE where OUR kids play? We'll take of YOU, for you, & there will be NO MORE YOU! Stay in your planetary 'space-ghetto' (Or not), Your choice..."

Sounds wild maybe?? Well, to me, the entire "Adam & Eve" being kicked out of paradise would be a way of putting it, so that less advanced cultures such as ourselves in the past would understand: IMO, we were exiled, simply because of HOW WE ARE, from the rest of those that MAY exist out in the interstellar deeps... apk

Good job finding something SETI, pfah.

About Aliens, we can't say anything one way or the other. There may be aliens more advanced, or less advanced. Personally I beleive they HAVE to exist somewhere though.

There was a little bit of the night time sky little pixel of a space, that seemed to have nothing in it. For four months hte Hubble was pointed right there gathering everything it could. What it found in that little spot, is more stars and solar systems then we can see with out eyes, solar systems that broke OUR laws of physics.

Of course that stuff could all be gone by now, but who knows. Has Sun really blown it's fuse yet? According to us, itll be a few billion years before we know anyways.

Completely Bonkers
from the article:
Kimberly's writings were safe, and the thieves didn't appear to have broken into her e-mail or other personal folders. But the returned computer contained 20 tracks of rap music with unintelligible lyrics, possibly from the person who stole the computer or bought it on the underground.

"It's really, really horrid rap," Melin said. "It makes Ludacris look like Pavarotti."
hilarious

It doesn't hurt to have more searches for life in other galaxies. On a somewhat sad sidenote though even if we did find a signal could potentially be hundreds of thousands of years old. By that time the alien equivilant of George Bush could have already taken over and wiped out that civilization.

Easy Rhinoso what you saying is we are all being spied on!!!
well if the laptop was still connecting to the SETI network (after someone taxed it and plugged it into their cable modem assumedly) the husband could probably go into his account or whatever SETI users have and see what IP address was being logged under his profile.

The ISP could then have potentially used that IP to simply search and find the thief/his details...i still dont get how noone got arrested....

LOL!

:)

"Darth Cheney"... he has travelled galaxy-to-galaxy, in search of races & solar systems to plunder, that are full of those that do NOT recognize his threat & methods!
