Alleged ASUS ROG Ally Slide Shows More Details

There has been a lot of info about the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally handheld console, and now, an alleged slide has leaked online, confirming some of the previous specifications and revealing that custom AMD Phoenix APU, called the Ryzen Z1. The ASUS ROG Ally has been spotted on the FCC website, featuring the Ryzen 7 7840U APU, which could suggest that the Ryzen Z1 is a custom version of that same APU. The slide in question was leaked and then removed from the original source, but HXL caught it on Twitter before it was removed.

It confirms the 1920x1080 resolution screen with 500 nits of brightness, 120 Hz refresh rate, and 7 ms response time. The Ryzen Z1 series APU will be paired up with 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM in dual-channel mode, and have 512 GB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage in M.2 2230 slot. It is also possible that ASUS will have several versions with different storage and/or RAM configuration. It will run Windows 11, making it compatible with all popular game platforms Steam, EA App, Epic Games, and Xbox Game Pass. Furthermore, it will support Dolby Atmos and have a microSD card slot for storage expansion. Another leaked slide showed the ROG Ally Travel Case, and there will be plenty of other ROG Ally accessories. ASUS has already announced that the ROG Ally will be available worldwide and could launch sooner than expected, so all we need now is that official launch and the price.

The only missing details are the price and availability. Hoping to pick one up considering the Steam Deck isn't available worldwide.

Ryzen 7 7840U is not bad. If its like the 6800U in my Lenovo then it should be able to run Elden Ring at 800p60 with mixed medium settings.

It could be great, but they went with a 1080p screen (per this slide) which will kind of waste a bit of the potential

To each their own. Indie games are gonna run great at 1080p 120fps or lower. 800p screens should be at the cheap end only. Plus, since it’s on 4nm or smaller than the Steam Deck, it’s able to scale power at lower wattages without losing performance. So 1080p should be standard at this point

How would this be a waste? 1080p out of a 7- or 8-inch screen is ~275ppi, which is good enough for me. Anything higher would be a waste and would add unnecessary strain on the iGPU when playing games.

Remember the 12 CUs in this thing is still the equivalent of a GTX 1650 Ti or a low-powered RTX 3050 non-Ti, which both still work fine with 1080p.

2560x1600 or 2880x1800 would require integer scaling (1280x800 & 1440x900) which apparently AMD APUs (or maybe just their drivers) can't do on the native display on a laptop.

It's a 5'' or 6'' display, high resolution is not necessary. I get that it's weird when any phone uses 1080p, but on one side it's not necessary and on the other, most phones use fake 1080p with pentile screens so doesn't really count either (we don't notice because, again, small screen, but it looses a lot of sharpness

You misunderstood me, I was arguing they could have used something lower res, like the steam deck for example, exactly because of that, the DPI is still huge ;)
(is this 7 or 8 inch? i though it was more in the 5'' ballpark)

Ah I see, I misunderstood then. However, I believe 1080p should be fine for this APU. 800p is good for the Steam Deck's APU since it was only 8 CUs, but since the 6800U can handle 900p up to 1200p, I'm sure this new Z1/7840U can do 1920x1080 at 120 FPS just fine.

I ran Apex Legends (3 GB VRAM limit) with an uncapped frame rate with it hitting 107 FPS at 800p with around 80 FPS as the average on the Steam Deck. I'm sure this Ally can make use of its 120Hz display well, depending on the game and its settings of course.

1080p is a waste on that small display???? It is overkill :D.

Hoping to see good price.

I've change my 5" screen of my Honor 9 from 1080p to 720p, you can see the difference but it's really not necessary. On the Steam Deck, the 1280x800p is really perfect for efficiency, you can see that 1080p will be sharper, but when you are playing, you are not noticing it.
The Asus Ally could have put something similar with a higher refresh rate and get a lot more autonomy and less TDP, so they could have remove a fan, make it lighter, better storage or something else instead.

It is 7 inches according to all of the hands-on previews on youtube.

I would also like to know how long will the device work on the battery. The screen has 120hz option, but it doesn't seem viable as the higher refresh rate drains more power.

The one thing I'm asking the most for is 32GBs of RAM, I think going for 16GBs of shared memory would pose a serious impairment in the longevity of this device.
