ASUS Unveils DRW-20B1L/B1LT Lightscribe SATA DVD Burner

ASUS, a leading provider of high-performance optical storage devices, has today unveiled the ASUS DRW-20B1L/B1LT internal DVD rewriter with LightScribe direct disc labeling technology. This industry leading DVD rewriter provides a high speed of 20X DVD±R write, 12X DVD±R (DL) and 12XDVD-RAM reading capabilities. In addition, users can expect to enjoy five times faster data transfer rates than the current DMA33 standards with the SATA interface. It also features Optimal Tuning Strategy - a technology that automatically adjusts burning for optimum disc backups; and the E-Green Engine for great energy savings.

Achieve Optimum Disc Backups with Optimal Tuning Strategy (OTS)
The ASUS DRW-20B1L/B1LT comes equipped with the innovative Optimal Tuning Strategy (OTS) for improved disc burning and better overall write quality. With OTS, the drive will perform a test burning before actually burning the disc - intelligently calculating the best burning strategy based on operating temperatures and media and drive variations. This provides the users with optimal write speeds for the new disc. After the disc is burnt, OTS memorizes the particular type of disc, and utilizes the same burning strategy when the same type of disc is used. This not only reduces the possibility to burn unplayable discs, it also provides high quality backups and improves compatibility so that the disc can more easily be read by other drives; as well as extending the lifetime of the drive.

Enjoy Energy Savings with E-Green Engine (Energy-Green Engine)
Another innovation of the DRW-20B1L/B1LT is the E-Green Engine technology. This handy feature provides an E-Green Mode which activates when the drives are idle for 2.5 minutes. Once activated, drive applications are closed when not in use to help conserve energy - helping the environment by saving energy, and in turn decreasing CO2 emissions and reducing the depletion of trees. According to in-depth calculations: on average, the PATA and SATA versions of the drive will provide 75% and 27% power savings respectively over competing solutions.

Versatility with Multiple Media Formats
The ASUS DRW-20B1L/B1LT offers flexibility for a wide array of media formats. Capable of both 20X DVD-Write and 20X DVD+Write, it is able to read from and writing on DVD-Write/ Rewrite and DVD+Write/ Rewrite formats. With such dual-format support, the DRW-20B1L/B1LT can create DVDs that can be played and read by most DVD-ROM drives and DVD players. This innovative DVD ROM drive also allows 6X DVD-Rewrite, 8X DVD+Rewrite, 16X DVD-ROM, 48X CD-Write, 32X CD-Rewrite, 12X DVD-RAM and 48X CD-ROM - further providing flexible and high-speed operations.

The ASUS DRW-20B1L/B1LT also adopts several innovative technologies found only in ASUS optical drives.

New Generation Airflow Field Modification (AFFMII)
Noise and vibration are two major headaches users encounter when using a high-speed drive. AFFMII is designed to change the uneven airflow field inside the drive to balance pressure distribution - leading to quieter and more stable operations.

Auto Vibration Reducing System (AVRS)
The AVRS technology is designed to minimize the vibrations caused by the spindle motor and resonance between components, as well as the drive and PC chassis. AVRS is designed to reduce vibration and noise induced by unbalanced mass of rotating machinery. With AVRS, the DRW-20B1S/B1ST will provide high readability and playability.

Fast Speeds with Creative Disc Labelling
Besides boasting an exceedingly fast speed of 20X for DVDs, the innovative LightScribe technology is also able to provide users with customized disc labeling. The LightScribe technology is comprised of three parts: the DRW-20B1L/B1LT Drive, LightScribe-compatible colored discs and LightScribe enabled burning software. After the data has been burnt onto the disc, users only have to flip the disc over to write the graphic and text on the label side - providing professional-grade labels.

Picked up the last model and have been very happy with its performance.
Although yet to make use of the lightscribe feature, i someday aim too.

They seem to be always decently priced soon after initial release.

Yeah, same here. Bought two but have yet to use the LightScribe feature because I have a printer capable of printing on DVDs.

I wonder what the difference could be this time.. the speeds are the same compared to the last model, and it's performance was identical to the drives I bought. What kind of incremental upgrades could warrant such a quick and seemingly useless transition in product remarketing.
