AMD 880G AM3 Chipset Details Emerge

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is planning on releasing a new 55nm chipset by Q3 next year, that will power the company's Socket AM3 processors (Athlon X4, Phenom II X3, Phenom II X4). Codenamed AMD 880G, this chipset will become part of the AMD Live! "Pisces" platform. AMD 880G will feature an integrated Radeon HD 3450 (RV620) DX10.1 graphics core, support for DDR3 memory, HyperTransport 3.0, Universal Video Decoder 2 (UVD 2), Hybrid Crossfire with the on-board Radeon HD 3450 graphics core and a PCIe 2.0 x16 discrete card, Display Port/HDMI/DVI/SurroundView support. The 880G chipset will be paired up with a SB710 southbridge to deliver 12x USB ports and 6x SATA ports. This chipset is also said to bring OverDrive 3.0 to AM3 platforms.

SB 710!?, why not use the SB750!? or is it too expensive to use that?

they gotta keep up is why, if AMD would manage to take the helm for some time from intel possibly get the JDEC to Only Implement a DDR Standard for some time, look how long DDR lasted before DDR2? and DDR is still faster than DDR2 even at higher clocks if you could obtain them.

why DDR3? because its socket AM3. DUrrr. Hurr. Hurrdurr.

SB710 is probably a cut down SB 750 - less PCI-E lanes, etc.

so i guess 880G is unlike 790GX then?

Try 1,800-2,000Mhz DDR. Or so says Intel. ;-/

Notice they placed a HD 4870 in the block for the RS880 while they placed a HD 34xx for RS780. Indicates that HybridPower / Hybrid CrossFire will be extended to even the high-end ATI graphics cards.
ShadowFoldWhy DDR3 AMD?! WHY?!
Why not?

Phenom II doesn't benefit from the ACC fabric in SB750 / MCP79. The 'benefits' are built in. That aside, SB710 is the same SB700 with fixes to the internal clock generators that were discovered in batches of SB700.

It sure does, but there's talk that it would be extended to all ATI accelerators, though you could trust AMD at this point in time, not the rumors.

Wait wait wait...Athlon X4??! What the deuce?

Doesn't look like there's many changes in terms of performance. Probably just old graphics chip with some improvements like UVD2 and DX10.1 support as well as a new name for the chipset (880G) and improved southbridge (SB710).

Can't wait to see what Overdrive 3.0 can do though.

Now gimme Deneb!!!

Athlon X4 is the Duron of the Past, AMD Decided Phenom 2 will be Top and Athlon Would be Budget, but i think AMD needs to Rethink that since Athlon means "Champion of the games" in Greek.

Chips based on the Propus core = Athlon X4. Those on Rana core = Athlon X3.

Seems odd that there using the a integrated 3450 and calling it that instead of something like 4200. I like that there not going with the rename game for now.

Why RV620?

I don't see why AMD wants to use RV620 in their future chipset. Why don't they use RV710 or something newer than that?

@ShadowFold I'm pretty sure I have seen the article that said AMD 880 will support both DDR2 and DDR3 (but I doubt that you can use both at the same time).

Hence DDR2&3 :)

I was wondering the same thing. Why not put HD 4350 graphics or something on the new chipset?

Im assuming the Athlon X4 isnt Duron, because that was AMDs celeron chips really. Im thinking its the entry level quad chips low in price, power and for mainstream users.

Well we know that both AMD and Intel will phase out Dual core in favor of Quad in the future. Before they do that though they will likely relegate Dual to low-end budget paltforms.

Q3 for an AM3 + DDR3 platform is a long wait IMO. I'll wait for it though because I don't really want to jump on until then. I expect DDR3 to be cheaper by then.

yea i saw that too would be nice if that was true because then nearly everyone can get a graphics performance boost even if you have a high end video card. but one thing to remember is that by the time this is out the hd4000 series will be old and there will be a new graphics lineup. the question is will it work with them?

No. They're those based on the 45nm Propus core. Those cores don't feature L3 caches. Some actually think it's a good move, thinking lack of L3 cache would mean reduced latencies and transistor loads (resulting is lesser power draw (better OC)).

Am I reading this wrong, they talk about the new Pisces chipset, then mention the 880G boards will have HD3450's built in. But then below it seems they show the high-end chipset and shows the HD4000 cards built in. But then they make no mention of that higher-end board.
