OK, here's a 2006 run (21,300 and a bit) just to get one on the board, I have not tried to push the card any further yet as it appears I have other problems! so just playing with various core/shader combinations...... for some reason with my whole CPU setup identical to a previous run with my old 260 I am getting 1200 less CPU points than I did then, the settings are all saved to a BIOS profile so I know they are identical, I can only think there must be some fairly intensive processes running in the background now that were not running back then.

If I can get a bit more out of the 280 and get back my 1200 CPU points in 2006 this might come close to my old Gainward 260 192 core card (22,040) but it would appear at this stage that at least synthetically the 280 is not as fast but there is a way to go yet, also two 4850's thrash this so far (nearly 24000) for the same price.

There must be something that wasn't there before.. But, still is a great run!!! Yeah, crossfire 4850's look to be faster, but gotta go Crossfire to even get that to happen.. That's the way I look at it.. I've never had a 20k run yet on 06... I need to try and get it there!!!

Thanks, and like i said, in real world games this is probably faster, thing is, when i got the two palits, they were cheaper than a 280, they are not now as 280 prices have come down and 4850's havent over here so probably the 280 is the better buy, plus i do prefer single card solutions.

I am determined though, once i get this CPU sorted and do some further tweaking to beat my old 260 score but dont you just hate new graphics cards, i spend all my time trying to get to know them and not playing games so I am going to have a couple of days off benching/tweaking and a couple of days of COD WaW multiplayer!

Yeah, your right about that. At the time it was the better thing! The Palits... It just happens the way it does any more. I've found that the 280 and games, where the same FPS in most games I played with my 9800Gx2 SSC, Clocked to where everyone on XS had theirs.. So at stock of a 280, it matches the power of the Gx2... So, I'm really happy to see it.

I've never been a "fan boy" of sorts on hardware. I really would love to run another ati card. But, due to how the drivers are, to my likings, it's worth just being at the green side..

Of course. Mine's an EVGA SC. I can't seem to push it over 710/1500/1200. I'm hoping a voltage increase will give me some headroom.

Those speeds are virtually identical to the max stability for my XFX GTX 280. Higher speeds were not stable when running the F@H client.

ColdStorm. Thanks for the previous input on Precision. So what I would like to see is an actual 3dmark run. Where you keep the core/shaders locked and mem at the same level, and a second run with the shader unlinked and seriosuly underclocked. If the score is lower, then it works 100%. If it scores exactly the same, well....

Does that make sense. SO one run with GPU/Shader Linked another with the GPU at same level but shader seriously underclocked. Ram will not change for either run.

That'll be some time on that... I don't have 06 in my system, so I'll be testing to see what I can make the highs and what not. But be happy to do so. Might not be as high of clocks as what I do for Vantage, but it will be what you want..

Yeah I dont care what the clocks are. Doesnt matter as long as they are consistent between tests. Thanks! :toast:

Update:

All right. I really didn't have enough time to do testing with benching again of 06... I still have book work to do for work...

I wasn't able to do the test fully with it linked. I could do Graphics fine, but CPU kept on giving the famous 124 error at the end of test 2 of the CPU.. So... Here is the 3 screens I was able to do with stock clocks, but moved shader..

Here is the first one with graphics test :linked:

Here is the second one with Graphics Test :unlinked:

Now, even though I wasn't able to do the test with it linked.. I was able to do it with it unlinked at the same shader and so forth..

As you can tell from the times, I put the watermark somewhere else so you can see, The times on the it shows that It was one after another and another.. No fobar about it. You can see the "realtimes" on Percision, and that my ram and everything else is good.

Sorry I couldn't do a real oc on the GPU. I just don't have the time to do it tonight. Messing with ocing of both my board and GPU...

not gonna happen on air. The 260 had the advantage of being a lighter card with less cores so less heat.

Yeah, I think your probably right and those extra 48 shaders dont appear to make up for 45mhz on the core  Games comparisions would be useful though to hopefully show better performance otherwise why would anyone buy a 280 or 216SP 260! anyone at least who overclocks.

After seeing those results Cold Storm you scores actually went down even though the shader clock was higher. Thing is the scores are so close I would have to call them with an error range. So it looks to me like Precision does not unlink the core/shader other then in software.

It could be.. I'll have to do some runs with my system "stable" lol.. 3.6 is stable for Vantage, but 06 doesn't like it... So, now I'll go down and try it again..

But, you could be right on the money with it. Just to show that it is on software.. Damn tricky stuff!

Well I just downloaded and installed EVGA's GTX2xx Voltage utility, it is not integrated with Precision...yet. I would assume it will become an extension of Precision in the future. ATM it's just a simple program that allows you to move up or down in pretty small increments, though the max voltage is limited to 1288mv, 1.3v approx. Mine runs at 1063mv stock, or 1.06v atm. I've yet to increase voltage and oc, jut figured I'd toss up a screeny for those interested:

My voltage options are based on my 65nm GTX260 Core216, iirc 1.15v was the highest in bios I could set to...but maybe moving up in smaller steps can still grant higher clocks without the temps going thru the roof? I've yet to vmod my core216 like I did my 192sp variant, but I'm interested to see what some of you attain! Also my GPU is folding in that screeny if some were wondering about the temps. :D

use 1.18v the 192 260gtx has that setting and thats what a 280 gtx runs on

Trust me I know (See OP :D ). I don't have 1.18v as an option in Bios for this Core216 card like I did my 192sp. Max on my core216 is 1.15v, where on the 192sp was 1.18v. It runs great on 1.06v, I may find the need to see what it can do with more volts one day, but my current clocks and performance are plenty for my gaming and folding needs.

Man, thanks for this! I went to Evga's website this morning and didn't see a thing! Here is the link For anyone that want's to download it. But, you have to login to do so. Shouldn't be hard since it's for Evga card's only! downloaded now and going to install!

i'n not sure thats true the bios are factory, so it should work for any 260 gtx

I may just have to give it a go. I've always been curious what the max clocks of this card are with voltage...hell I'm not even sure how far it goes on 1.06v. I'm getting the itch, maybe after a few rounds of WiC MP I'll see what i can do!

Ignorance is bliss right? :D

If they don't research, it's their fault in the assumptions they make, it doesn't hurt them to use google or ask a question, or find the thread where guys like you and I have some experience with a different versions of these cards under our belts.
