Well, I thought I'd bring this back up again - and will again cite my reasoning why I feel having a seperate subforum for audio hardware would be worthwhile.

1.) There's a lot to cover - everything from standalone audio cards and motherboard onboard solutions, to headsets and multi-channel speaker systems and recievers . . . both anaologue and digital. As it is, I feel a lot of the threads discussing these topics tend to get buried rather quickly within the GH subforum - having a subforum for dealing with audio equipment and hardware would make them much more easier to spot . . . and would eliminate some of the clutter that, IMHO, abounds in the GH section. Personally, I feel that if this aspect of the tech market can be given more exposure, we'd see more users becoming interested in it as well. I can recall maybe 3 different threads over the last 6 months where a few of our more knowledgable users had engaged in some fairly in-depth discussion over audio hardware, and those discussions, IMO, were quite beneficial and helpful to users who read through them . . . I think that if we could have a more dedicated space for such discussion would entice more users to engage the subject matter as well. We have some extremelly knowledgable audio hardware users around TPU . . .

2.) Audio equipment itself has changed a lot over the years, and with the advent of onboard systems, various other issues have come up . . . with stand-alone audio cards becoming more and more prevailant in systems (even OE systems), I forsee more questions and discussions arising in the future . . . even more-so when one takes into account how much more powerful other system devices are, and the oftimes negative impact these devices can have on audio equipment (high-powered GPUs, CPUs . . . WiFi devices, numerous high-powered case fans, 1kW+ PSUs, etc.) . . . not to mention how picky and sensitive audio equipment and hardware is . . . IMHO, it seems many times we see repeat threads asking the same questions about nearly the same equipment or hardware . . . again, users don't seem to like to search through dozens and dozens of threads for answers . . .

3.) Most other major sites have some sort of subforum for audio equipment or multimedia . . . and these sections thrive quite well. Although GH does cover audio hardware and equipment by and "umbrella" standard, the market itself is strong enough to warrant individual attention . . . Also, ongoing discussions tend to carry on much longer when not being buried by neighboring threads, and awarness of audio equipment in general would prove beneficial to the community as a whole - I think many people are rather mystified as to how audio processing is carried out, and being able to have a section that users can easily browse through on the topic would be beneficial, as, again, most users don't like to hunt too far for answers . . .

Asides - I also think it'd be great if TPU could start offering reviews of new audio hardware (audio cards themselves, not simply speaker sets and headphones), but I'm not sure what all kinds of work that would entail to arrange. IMO, that's one opf the few types of hardware that seems overlooked with TPU reviews . . .

Anyhow, just wanted to throw this back out into the arena, and open a poll with it as well to collect feedback from our users.

What are y'all's thoughts?

+1 Just yesterday I was looking for the audio section of the forums and realized there wasnt one :( I was wondering if anyone here has an Asus HDMI sound card connected to a DTS-MA/TrueHD capable receiver.

Vote yes, I do think we should. Would be a great idea because I do know there are quite a few people that have questions relating to audio,
and they seem to just get lost in the General Hardware section. And reviews would be pretty sweet as well.

Yes, however, I don't think it should be named "Audio Hardware", but just "Audio" as it should be for everything, both hardware, and the drivers and software that "power" the hardware we all use in our systems.

I'm for it, as i've said in the past i wanted an "audio visual" or "home entertainment" section - why have it jsut audio, when we can cover HDTV's, media PC setup, HTPC setup, etc.

"multimedia" would be a good idea, too . . . although, personally, I had thought an audio hardware section to be able to relocate everythin audio into once source would be alright - with multimedia, we'd be mixing in everything else - tuners, Dolby, video, etc.

the point is tho, there wont be much traffic for those areas. And once you have a guy ask questions about how to get DTS audio working from his DVD's, it wont be long before he asks about blu ray and how to set up a codec in windows media player...

its all related, so IMO it belongs together.

just looking at the first page of 'most recent' threads in general hardware, i can see 5 threads specific to audio.

Rather let's square it off as audio-video sub-forum. People will talk more about HTPCs, sound-cards, speakers, and HDTVs.

Either we not start a new forum thinking there isn't significant demand, or we start the forum and attempt to create demand.

thats the way i see it. we have enough traffic that would fit there under audio alone, and once we get up and running with some good audio stuff, the other categories will come flooding in and make it worth while.

That would truly be sweet. I'm in the midst of a headphone/headset change atm, and have found more answers on [H] and Head-Fi than here, but getting the right people to look at my thread has definately helped out a bunch here...yet having a dedicated area would be nice for sure. A lot of TPU'ers take their PC audio and beyond seriously, so it'd definately be a popular place for forum users. Nice thought imperial! I'm not suprised it was you that brought it up either! :D

I'm glad to see this kind of feedback - I had figured most other users would be fairly in agreement, but without presenting the idea (again) I don't think the idea would really come up . . .

Rather let's square it off as audio-video sub-forum. People will talk more about HTPCs, sound-cards, speakers, and HDTVs.

Either we not start a new forum thinking there isn't significant demand, or we start the forum and attempt to create demand.

Or, we could do an A/V general subforum with two seperate subforums, one for video, one for audio . . . but, I think that might make things more complicated than they need to be . . .

Although, I fully agree with the idea of creating demand - I was trying to get that across in my initial post . . . that if we have a dedicated area that users can browse through threads related specifically to audio (and/or A/V hardware and setups), more users would become more interested in this kind of hardware, and what it's uses are.

Like I mentioned prior, in regards to audio hardware, I think the majority of users are oblivious to how audio processing actually works - there hasn't really been a lot of tech coverage on this type of hardware . . . ever. Some sites have very thorough reviews, but not easily navigable forums (or even user-friendly forums) . . . or some sites have very in-depth forums (typically filled with somewhat closed-minded audiophiles), but no reviews or good discussion on new hardware . . .

It's why, for example, I had created the audio specification guide a long while back - I don't feel that there is enough "awareness" of the hardware, and spec sheets for new hardware are becoming more and more "bloated" with more and more specs . . . it just leads to more un-informed users becoming more and more confused, and there's no real good, friendly, open site to go to for answers . . . TPU is a great site (IMHO), packed with friendly, open-minded, and helpful users . . .

We might not have 100% demand yet, but I think we could easily gear people's interests.

A/V subforum would be great! I've learned so much about computer since I've been here I'd love to learn more about Audio or A/V in general.

+1 from me.

I've given this quite a bit of thought as I hate to just post a "+1" or something equally worthless.

After looking at the general hardware forum it seems as about 90%+ threads are related to two things; peripherals and troubleshooting.

Perhaps it would make more sense to make a peripheral forum that would cover all types of peripherals (including A/V) and a troubleshooting forum where people could post their problems (of any kind) instead of having a General Hardware forum. The GH forum is a catch-all that people post to when they are not sure where else the thread should be. Maybe it would be better to have a couple of more specific forums, so they gravitate to the forum best suited for their needs.

TPU is all about tech, but to what level that tech is deliniated is up to our fearless leader. A questions about a dashboard mounted, in-vehicle GPS is definitely tech, but does not deserve it's own forum. This is where I see peripheral and troubleshooting forums being really usefull. As long as people can restrain themselves from creating something like "The Crazy GPS Picture Thread".

Just my 2 cents. ;)

I think it would work. I get a lot of PMs about audio hardware so the interest is in my opinion there people just do not know where to direct their enthusiasm. An AV forum would be nice.

Also it would be good if there was a feature where the threadstarter can indicate that the question has been answered already, perhaps a tick to indicate that the problem has been solved and a question mark to indicate that the threadstarters problem hasn't been solved yet.

Edit:

Just edit the post and type "problem solved" in bold letters. Just like how sellers in the buy/sell/trade forum edit their posts and place "item sold!" once they're though with their sale.

I know buts its not as good as having a proper feature that indicates it. A lot of other forums have it which makes TPU appear ancient and in the dark ages.
