Look everybody, the problem with the Fermi delay is easy to fix. It's the thing that nvidia's been doing for some time now. Can you think what it is?

REBRAND!

Yes, just rename a GT200, put it in a "different" series card and add a couple of inconsequential features to make it "different" to the previous card with the same performance and up the price.*

Wow, I can't wait for the "285 GTX+" !! (Notice how I cleverly swapped things round there and added a plus? No one will ever realise. Seriously.)

Can you?!!

*The price upping might be a bit of a problem with the current competition...

Not even funny :shadedshu

It was more about sarcasm at nvidia's dirty tricks. nvidia have it coming with all their spin and half-truths lately.

And I think it was pretty good. Thanks! :toast:

I find this funny lol. I meant nothing by my previous statement anyway. I really think the rebranding is taken out of proportion tho.

re branding the 8800 gt all the ay up to the gtx250 was to far but apart from that nvidia has done okay on the 2xx series

im not buying until at least easter/summer because prices will be far to high, a card i look for is like £150 or so and if something isnt better than my GTX 260 by miles by then im keeping this sucker

I'm defintly not gonna commit to any card/brand for the next 3 years untill ive got a choice from both companeys!

I think they are trying not to Rebrand this time around, or may be thay can rebrand due to dx11?
But you can be sure once they do release the card we can look forward to a new gen of rebranded dx11 nv cards

i seriously doubt they are going to try and make release by rebranding fermi is DX11 if they stick to that they cant rebrand even if they wanted to because fermi is DX11

If they rebrand older cards to make Fermi, they're over.

That's impossible.

Since 8x00 series until now, all the cards have same features, DX10, CUDA capable. That's why it made sense for them to rebrand the higher-end cards of the older gens to become lower-end, mainstream of the newer gens (die shrunk too), as long as the performance stay where it supposed to be.
I think that's a smart move, save money to research something with different technologies, like Fermi, DX11 cards.

Seriously, what is the different between GTX280 and 8800GTX? Performance, that's it. Rebranding or not, doesn't matter, what matter is how much are they cost? Is it cost effective? Is price/performance ratio is reasonable?

Consumers always buy something with better performance and features, and anyone knows that 8400GS is not faster than 7800GT. So, if you owned an 7800GT and upgraded to 8400GS, blame yourself for being an retarted.

This post does not relate to any real person or event, if it does then it's just coincident.

 2 years man, in fact not even 2, if you bought it just when it was launched it's more like 1 year and 10 months if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe 2 long years, I know they have been long for me with my 8800 GT being able to play everything out just well, except Crysis, the game I bought the card for.

Here's some "news" from The Inquirer. They don't cite any sources though, so tread lightly.

The Inquirer said:
Not expected until some time in 2010

NVIDIA HAS CONFIRMED that its already much-maligned Fermi GPU based graphics cards won't be seeing the light of day in 2009.
Nvidia will include Fermi-based GPUs in three different product lines - GeForce, Quadro and Tesla - in the first quarter of fiscal 2011 (January 26-April 26, 2010), said Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia's CEO, during a conference call with financial analysts, reports Digitimes.
Obviously this means that Nvidia will ship its new products based on the Fermi GPU range in 2010, instead of near the end of 2009 as originally planned.
This comes after Charlie Demerjian's sources confirmed Fermi's A2 revision had only just finally taped out - which if true meant that real world silicon wouldn't ship in 2009.
Considering that multiple sources are toeing the same line, it appears that Nvidia fans won't be seeing Fermi this side of Christmas. In fact, we tend to doubt they'll see graphics cards at retail before May.
A small ray of light for Nvidia comes in the form of apparent difficulties with TSMC's 40nm process - the same process currently producing GPUs on behalf of AMD.
It seems that AMD might not be able to take full advantage of Nvidia's delay, having to cope with delays in shipping its new 40nm-based Radeon HD5800 series. µ

wow i've finally managed to read through all of these posts, and linked articles and other threads, and i must say, VERY interesting.

I was hoping at least their high end spec Fermi card would be out by Christmas only to keep ATI's prices in check, but looks like that's not going to happen. Maybe they don't actually have to release a card in Dec. for that to happen though, Maybe they'll have a couple cards they can ship off to popular benchmarkers (like TPU) and the results will be enough that those who would have went ahead and bought ATI will now wait (after seeing benchies) and buy the new nVidia card. This may cause ATI to lower prices slightly to attract these people back to their cards... <- just a very unlikely theory lol

I guess a more realistic bit of good news out of this is that maybe nVidia will have more refined drivers by the time of release?

Will they rebrand a GT200 and make a mid-range DX11 card?
Very unlikely, but it is well possible.

So, the GT210 and GT220 are just pull out of thin air? These suckers are DX10.1 cards.
You can say they are not actually rebranded, as they are slightly different, but they are pretty much identical otherwise to their Geforce 8/9 brothers.

Actually there is quite a difference between a G80 and a GT200.
The GT200 is overall much more efficient than the G80 in power consumption and power states.
The GT200 also have parts of the die dedicted for CUDA.
The G80 also lacks proper DXVA support in many ways.

In terms of cost effectiveness, power consumption is also an issue.
For mainstream gamer, a more power hungry card (ex. 9800GTX+) requires a higher power PSU which adds to a good chunk of the system cost.
This is where the 4850 truely shines over other cards in that market segment.

Very unlikely, but it is well possible.

That's not possible, not the slightest, zero percent. They did not rebrand 7000 series to 8000 low-end, reason? It's DX9 and DX10 ,and it will be the same with DX10 and DX11 cards.

Speaking of the outercasting, I personally hate the stock Nvidia look. I wish they would do something better than that lame green logo.
