Agreed, but when yields are below 40% overall it doesn't matter too much if you have say a 35% or a 25%. Difference is just a 10%. Remember you pay for the entire waffer, so in each case you lose either 65% or 75% and it doesn't really matter as much as when one is having 85% yields and the other one has 60% although in both cases the relation is the same: one has 40% more working chips. That's how I see it.

Low yield means higher prices. I hope Fermi isn't to expensive...but i doubt it.

Reaching your left retina.

No, really?

I think you are not getting my point. When yields are so low you are still paying for 75% or 65% of the failed chips. In the end you are paying almost the same. The fact that a bigger chip means less chips per waffer influences more IMO.

None of the two matter too much in this case anyway. Nvidia is apparently paying in a per working chips basis under their current agreement, so they don't care too much about yields, except for the shortage. On top of that if GTX380 ends up being anything close to GTX285 SLI nothing of that will matter anyway, they will have a single GPU solution that competes with the HD5970 and could be sold for $450 if they wanted. In that case the GTX360 would be much faster than HD5870 too and sell for the same or less, so it all depends on how Fermi based GeForces will perform.

I think they give a rats, why else the hurry to push g310?

I dont think they care at the moment. I'm not sure about other parts of the world but here in Oz, 58xx ATI cards are out of stock and have been for weeks. It's Nvidia who is partying here.

Damn, both 5870 and 5850 are out of stock right after Black Friday! I've never seen them completely out of stock before on Newegg.com!

Watch BC2 get bundled.. ooo that would be so grimey..

With the price tag the card is going to have, I would like a library of games to come with it. Software is cheap!:D

Here's a "non-fudzilla/bsn/semi-accurate" source: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/13631/...010/index.html and posted 2 days earlier.

March seems to be the truth. I believe it is anyways.

Yeah I was just going to come in hear and mention this. I saw today the Nvidia is deciding to push back their Femi line till possible March if not April (if you believe the rumor mill).
Which while I perfer ATI brand to Nvidia I am still kind of saddened by this news. But with a lack of a solution from Nvidia .... ATI's prices will stay up, and keep going up. It will also keep ATI from really perfecting the 5870 for awhile as well. With out any competion there is no reason for ATI to do any of this.

Come on Nvidia move your ass already.:D

On a related topic I also wanted to chime in on the whole Nvidia state of things as well. My own personal opinion about what is going on with Nvidia is bleak. You don't hear much from them. With the fact that their CEO showed a fake Femi card and tried to pass it off as real is not giving their customers much confidence. Not only that the total lack of a set scheduled date and information about the card is disturbing too. Nvidia has refused to even really talk about DX11 and their new cards period. Which makes me think that Femi isn't a good as they are claiming.
Yes I know that they don't want to give anything away. Sure they don't want to tip their hand...... but is it really because they don't want ATI to catch wind of what their doing, or is it because they really don't have anything? Maybe it's because they aren't used to being in second place and they don't know quite how to take this. My statements here aren't meant to be cheering for one side or the other because if you noticed I actually want Nvidia to release their cards already. What my statements are meant to do is to inspire conversation and opinion's about this.
But it looks like by the time Nvidia finally does get their act together the 6870 and the Larrabee will be well on it's way. :(

This is business.Nvidia is selling their dx 10 cards....and Ati is selling less dx11 cards

Sure Nvidia is selling their DX10 cars..... But ATI is also selling their's as well as their DX11 cards.
If they weren't than there would be more stock. Not only are the selling them retail they are also selling them to Alienware, HP, Dell, and a million other PC makers. So of course their not going to have any in stock.
Nvidia's DX10 GTX200 series cards were ground breaking wonderful powerful cards. I can't say enough good about them! But I have noticed in allot of forums that people are also buying them not because they were especially looking for them. But because people are settling for them instead of a 5800 Series. (lack of stock)
No not most people are buying them because of that......... most people are buying them because of other reasons. But I have still noticed quit a few people claiming that on New Egg and Tiger Reviews.

YYUUHMMMM!!!!! lol i remember furby's they were awesome lil things when they came out, course i broke mine, no more yum XD

@20mmrain:
yea i think you have alot of what some of us have been thinkin. i mean i've wondered myself if nvidia's fermi attempts are a fail. Remember the 2900xt that was expected on paper, to have amazing performance(like fermi), got delayed(like fermi), and barely any leaks(like fermi). Course that was ATI not nvidia. But the lack of solid info on the card makes me think the same that nvidia doesn't have anything right now. I mean if i were nvidia and i saw all of ATI's dx11 cards selling out and ATI having a good hand on the low end market then i'd release SOMETHING even if it was bs just to encourage people to wait or make some noise in attempt to interfere with ATI's sales.

You make a very good point. One could relate this to the 2900XT gen. What is good on paper is not always good in real life. I mean what good is all this high end tech if you can't get it to work. I also do agree with your statement that Nvidia could release something at least to bait the people to wait.
Some would say they have...."GT100, GTX240, EXC." but a ultra low end card that doesn't even support DX11 is not going to help them. I think they were trying to recreate the success that ATI had with the 4770 and their pre 40nm tech release. But I think that card worked because of it's timing.
The timing was to show everyone what's in store. And know one had anything like that out..... Also DX11 wasn't out then yet either.
Nvidia doesn't understand that not many people want to buy rehashed tech over and over again. "Example GTX 275 Co-op" So you added a dedicated Physx chip. Why would anyone sell their current GTX 275 to go with that????...... When you could easily go out and just buy yourself a GTX250 for cheaper.
People might ask why I am blasting these cards what does it have to do with "Femi"? Well it has to do a lot with "Femi"
If the GT300's were all that great why not release at least a higher low end card to show off how wonderful it is...... and how it compares to the 5800 Series....Instead of just re branding old tech.
By all means this is not a rant on Nvidia's Great GTX200 Series again .... (For all the fan boy's I'm making mad)....those are great cards. I just still think Nvidia is bluffing on this round! And it is a shame because that means there will be no competition. I could be wrong totally..... but we will see.

LOL I will stop ranting now I promise!

Also I guess it will still only be ATI and Nvidia dicking it out Because Intel just dropped out of the race...... So I retract my previous statement.

@ a_ump & 20mmrain:

You both make great points about how Fermi may be a paper tiger, like the 2900XT and it's starting to look a bit like that, isn't it?

BTW, I've still got my 2900XT* 1GB out of sentimental value (1GB cards were rare when I got this). The one thing they got right in my book, ironically, is the physical styling of it. With it's great flame design, imposing red looks and the 6+8-pin power connector, you expect a monster card with monster performance. Yet, when you plug it in and play a game, it makes a great big noise with poor framerates! How embarrassing.

*It's actually a Pro that I have BIOS modded to an XT, so I wasn't stupid enough to pay the monster price to go with it.

Half of making a great GPU is writing stable drivers for it that don't crash in games and can run in all available titles of the current generation....... its more difficult than creating a GPU architecture alone. I think thats where Intel will drop the ball for the first couple generations.

The purpose of it is to show how it would stack up on paper. Using that graph and nothing else...... It looks like Nvidia will edge it out...... But again the article mentioned a 5890 coming as well. When all is said and done. Weather your interested in either side. It looks like the buyers out there are going to have a hard choice. Ahead!
