The only problem I have with my 5850, is panning after zooming in on a picture with Nero photo-viewer.

I use 64-bit win7 I figure a driver-update will resolve the issue :p anyone else use Nero for photos and have this happen?

I'm still artifact free. Raising my clocks has resolved my issues. I also haven't had the grey screen of death/reboot since.

one thought i'm having, is that lowering the ram clocks too far, perhaps they're tightening timings automatically?

Or maybe the ram just doesn't like running too slow?

My educated guess is too much voltage for the low clocks. I've seen it a million times with underclocking cpus, where a higher voltage was less stable than a lower one.

I've had video corruption/artifacts while experimenting with underclocking a video card - and it was just in 2D desktop mode on XP. At some point, the chip is running so slow that it can no longer support the video mode being used. Switching to a lower res mode will solve the problem. The clocks can be lowered a bit more after that. Too low though and nothing at all works. Heck, try it! :)

My educated guess is too much voltage for the low clocks. I've seen it a million times with underclocking cpus, where a higher voltage was less stable than a lower one.

I've not tried it, but I'm not surprised that this is true: as the clock frequency is lowered, the voltage swings would get too large for the chip to work properly and would tend to saturate it, leading to reflected signals, ringing and a million other possibilites, all bad.

It's the exact opposite of what happens when you overclock. Here, the signal amplitude becomes smaller the higher the frequency and more voltage is required to restore it. Of course, too much voltage and frequency will blow the chip, as there's too much energy for it to cope with. Poor thing.

You guys should be fine for now then. But you can't be completely sure. I had one GPU artifacting on me, I was sure that the card was bad, and I changed it's cooling to a much better one and it all went away. It wasn't because of temps or volts. The card was all at stock. But after using it 2 or 3 months, it screwed itself up. It didn't work anymore. So I learned not to use a GFX card that I think is defective.

Think again about a RMA, it's your bet guys.

Ok, scrap this. My issues are ongoing as well. Some, although not as much, vertical lines and now the taskbar keeps freaking out and flashing.

Card is getting RMA'd

Thank you Newegg for providing great customer service!

My HD 2900XT is filling in!

Perhaps I stand corrected, and maybe ATI has a bad batch of cards out?

Fresh owner (only for 3 days) of HD5850 and dang, GSOD from first day. Second day too. From yesterday I've installed this and today is a full day without GSOD. Too early to be happy but it's a sign. :D
It looks like it's a complex problem. Something between ATI hardware/software and Seven latest updates. At least those guys think so.

Haha defending AMD for being open about issue... Well that kinda bites back to arse when all they have been doing is avoid and ignore the issue in their support. :D

Thankfully the 10.2 betas are working better so far, just like above user.

i much rather drivers fix the issue so quickly, than how long it too nvidia to fix the driver crashes they had on G80.

What does nVidia's former G80 problems have anything at all to do with modern drivers? Sorry to say, ATI is currently behind nV when it come to the quality of drivers.

its an example, that in the past Nv had just as many issues (a very similar problem really) with new GPU cores.

Yes, ATI is having more issues than Nv right now - but its because Nv hasnt released a new core in so long, they've got experience with the cores they have.

3 months/3 drivers and ATI's solving the grey screen issues fairly rapidly with drivers, took Nv a lot longer

At least they (NV) have now had extra time to polish the drivers than they originally planned. Probably only good thing about the delays...

Yeah, but ATI has been having issues since 8.11. It's getting out of hand now. Over a year of buggy drivers is total crap.

Yeah, but ATI has been having issues since 8.11. It's getting out of hand now. Over a year of buggy drivers is total crap.

as noticed in the other thread, you seem to be having more trouble than most.

Have i had issues? yes. scaling is a big one - but at least theres a workaround for that now.

All my other issues, go away when i turn crossfire off. Must be very unpleasant for you, if they do not.

something 5770 sized/power, with 5830?/5850 performance.

I'd like one card at the power of my two 4870's
