DigiTimes said:
Second-tier makers unlikely to start mass shipping Nvidia Fermi cards until April

Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Thursday 25 February 2010]

Second-tier graphics card makers are unlikely to start mass shipments of their Nvidia GeForce GTX 480/470-based (Fermi) graphics cards until April despite that Nvidia plans to announce the GPU on March 26 since most of the them have not yet received complete reference board designs, according to sources from graphics card makers.

The sources expect Nvidia will give supply priority to first-tier makers or makers that only produce Nvidia cards. Listings offering cards from XFX and PNY with GTX 480 models priced at around US$679.99 and GTX 470 at about US$499.99 were briefly available at some online retailers, but have since been taken down. PNY contacted Digitimes to stress that it is not offering pre-orders for Fermi cards at this time, which implies that the listings were the result of miscommunication in the company's channel.

Some market watchers originally expected AMD to drop its graphics card price to counter the launch of Nvidia's new cards, but since the prices of Nvidia cards are higher than AMD's existing cards, watchers now believe any price war between the two chip makers is unlikely to start until after May.

No price war... :(

It looks like nVidia is risking every single Murphy Law with this kind of launch..

What kind of launch? It's not a launch yet, Nvidia has not released anything yet.

Since Nvidia doesn't sell directly to retailers and PNY had nothing to do with the listings, it's obvious it was just SabrePC attempting to obtain recognition. Truth be told it's been a big success, because how many knew that site last week? And now?

whats sabrepc?

Your kidding or you really didn't see that part? SabrePC is the etailer that listed a 1 GB GTX470 with 512 SPs for $500 and a 2 GB GTX480 with 512 SPs (this one is normal) for $700.

From there everyone is assumng that GTX480 will cost that much and are making all kinds of speculations based on such an obvious fake.

yup and 2GB on a 384bit bus. That's why I always knew they were false.

This kind of launch:

I don't see why that is so bad? They are concentrating their cards on the partners that can actually ship worldwide and in volumes. Ati didn't even have second-tier partners until recently for the same reason. The article only says that the second-tier partners have not received a card yet anyway, not that they will not receive cards ready for launch or pretty soon after. As someone said, the next workday after 26 March is already April.

Also AMD did the same with HD58xx cards, they had to, since I don't remember seing many second tier brands at launch. Most of them were Saphires, HIS and Asus.

Sweden gets world exclusive GeForce Fermin card
Extremely limited edition card from XFX
by Gurra Aktersnurra

February 26, 2010

WHO WOULD’VE BELIEVED that Nvidia was willing create an exclusive card with one of its partners that would only go on sale in a single country. Well, it’s true and we have sourced proof from the exclusive online retailer that will be selling these very rare cards.

The design of the XFX GeForce Fermin as the card will be called is somewhat unusual as it’s using a quad stacked design. This is apparently only intended for serious overclockers who run their graphics cards on the “bench” so to speak, as it won’t fit into a normal ATX chassis. Nvidia and XFX have pulled out all the stops here to create something truly unique for the hardcore overclockers.

The so far unspecified GPU is clocked at what appears to be a fairly slow 666MHz, but this custom chip from Nvidia has no less than 666 stream processors (also known as shaders) which should allow it to beat just about any card on the market when it comes to GPGPU performance. Although with many shaders we’d expect the card to perform extremely well in most games. The GPU has been paired up with 4GB of GDDR5 memory using a 666-bit bus and the memory operates on a 666MHz quad pumped bus which results in the equivalent data rate of 2,664MHz which blows the competition away.

The most amazing thing here is, at least if your budget allows it, that you can run a pair of these cards in SLI. Considering that a single card requires a 1000W power supply, we can but wonder how much power two cards will need. The GPU appears to be running mighty hot, as the card has no less than four fans to help cool it. Swedish online retailer inet is Nvidia’s exclusive partner for the card and they’re offering two accessories for it. The first is a bag of mixed screws, but we were unable to confirm if this will include any wood screws or not. The second accessory is an ESD wrist strap with a spiral cable which is meant to be used at all time that the card is connected up to your system.

Now for the bad news, the cost. You’re look at ponying up no less than 9,995 SEK for one of these puppies, which is about $1,390. If that sounds like a bargain to you, then you better hurry up and put in your order now, as we’ve been told that there’s only a very limited run of these cards. Pre-orders are accepted, but limited to today only. This is a chance to own a truly limited edition Nvidia collector’s item and to have the bragging rights of owning one of the biggest graphics cards ever made.S|A

OK this sums up why I can't take semiaccurate seriously and why I think nobody should. We know it's for the lulz, but that's exactly the point: this one is obvious, despite the worryingly serious tone and complete lack of any signal pointing out that it's fake (except the card itself and specs, of course ). But how many semiaccurate news posts are for the lulz despite their serious appearance and how many hold even a 5% of truth instead? And knowing Charlie, how many of his posts are for his own lulz? :shadedshu

EDIT: I know it's off-topic, kinda, but I posted this here because it's related to the post made by Apa and to my comment that lately it seems that everybody takes rumors too seriously. I said I didn't know why, well now I can relate why. sigh

EDIT2: It also serves as an example of a fake listing becoming popular and gaining traction, because of the irresponsible actions of the "press". Maybe even becoming believable for the unwary.

The Sweedish site thing isn't even close to being funny. It's in the realm of stupid. It's been done before and yet another website trying to popularize itself by posting nonsense. People seem to be eating it up so it's working. Congrats.

To me its cool the Fermi cards are coming soon but I am one that won't be able to afford it. I'm looking forward to a possible price drop in their current offerings. My 2 x 9800gt's are past due for an upgrade.

I really do wish I could be one of the lucky ones able to drop that kind of cash on a card though. I'm sure as soon as it comes out this forum will be buzzing with benchmark runs making rigs like mine look way past obsolete.

On a side note why does it seem Nvidia has it's proverbial panties in a twist about being considered a gaming hardware manufacturer? I mean I see articles about them saying the GPU will be able to help out the CPU by picking up some of the slack and what not. Well in laymen terms that is the basis of it. Can anyone tell me what exactly this is useful for? So far the apps I use on a daily basis still aren't taking full advantage of my q9300 or my 8 gigs of ram. So what in the hell in forms of software is going to come along requiring my CPU to push off some of the processing onto the GPU?

well I see it definitely being useful in apps like adobe premiere, when I had the system built up, premiere ran decent on my I7 system but it could definitely use more filter acceleration, they will be pretty useful in folding and video encoding/production apps given the time it takes to make the plugins in my opinion.

lol 666 sps and 666 core clock . . . . . .

When did Charlie sneak in?

Do i have to start my post like this so i dont get flamed?

Started with an NV(FX'cant remember'), then went ATI (9800Pro), then back to NV with a 7950XT, 8800GT, 8800GTX, GTX260, GTX295 and now with dualie ATI 5850's. So on track - i'm an NV guy but currently sleeping with a lady in red shoes.

I read semiaccurate, techpowerup, the inquirer, Anandtech, Brightsideofnews and ocassionally fudzilla. From a lot of the posts that pop up in here a lot of the posters dont source their info from enough sources. That 'Fermin' card was a comp run by the website to spot a fake card. It's sad that people jump onto the 'blame Charlie' bandwagon when it was Lars Goran whatshis name's piece.
Also FTR, i slammed CD when he was at the inq. His writing is often vehement in his loathing but there was a nice post by Copper on S/A that gave some background as to why.

But back on track - every post that appears about Fermi adds to it's legend. It's in NV's interest for us all to talk about it. The more we talk and discuss the more we keep it alive. If nobody cared, NV's dream puppy would be at the bottom of a canal. But OUR gossip and pointless discussions (my own post included) on a product with very little on view so far make ir more real than it is.

So let's stick to the topic at hand - who's prettier, Keira Knightley or Chung Lee?

(ps - yes, i bought a 8800GTX after a 8800GT even though it was older - but it kicked ass)
