Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
they'll still end up getting some of my money either way im sure... it just makes no sense as to why they just cant release more info on their products. to me that sounds like they cannot even say yet because theyre not that far along to be making those kind of statements.

It does makes sense. They dont have a product that can compete with the 5970 in terms of performance.

Which is why instead of numbers, you're seeing "ooh look S3d! Cuda! PhysX - Image quality!?! Super-Tesselation!" theyre trying to change the relevant metrics to make the product look better when it gets creamed in FPS at the same quality settings in current games.

Oh lord this is so hilarious its almost painful...

if the card was only underperforming (frames wise) its original goal they would have released it far before now. I tend to think even if it was underperforming both frames wise and a huge power hog they still would have released it by now.

From there the only logical conclusion is that (excuse my C D tone here) that fermi truly is un-manufacturable in a state worthy of going to retail. They must know that the losses in production cost, RMA cost and extra marketing expenditures would greatly surpass any revenue from the sales of the cards themselves.

Who here wants to have to have 2 power supplies and an extension cord running to the other side of the house in order to run their dual card cruncher? not me!

But on tweak town, it looks like the PSU requirment for the GTX 470 is going to be 550watt's, also it looks like the site might be purposely over pricing and thats what i want to think right now, As said id buy a GTX 470 for 299, if tweak towns "shane" is correct which so far its rolling out to be :).

But lets see what happens. I expect reviews to be at most 2 weeks from now i hope :)

Nowdays if you buy a graphic card it is the same as buying a USB, cuz the prices go down so damn much that you are totaly amazed how much they costed when you bought the first one.
Example of USB: In 2007 in my country an USB 4GB = 110 euros
Now 8 GB = 15 euros
Example of 7600 GS: In 2007 it costed 130$
Now there are no more for sale :p

Seeing how PAX is scheduled for the end of march if they unveil at then I don't see a public release happening in march . . . .

also did anyone calculate the specs

GTX470
Core Clock:625Mhz
Shader Clock:1200Mhz
Memory Bus:64x5 (320 bit)
Pixel Fill Rate:25,000MPixels/sec/30,000MPixels/sec/?
Texture Fill Rate:35,000MTexels/sec
Raster Operators:40/48?
TMUs:56(14x4)

GTX480
Core Clock:600Mhz
Shader Clock:1250Mhz
Memory Bus:64x6 (384 bit)
Pixel Fill Rate:28,800MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate:38,400MTexels/sec
Raster Operators:48
TMUs:64(16x4)

they look bad but its all in the optimizations, i made up the clocks though.

anyone remembers that line from 40nm yield story by fudzilla "Senior manager from Nvidia has told Fudzilla that “Our (Nvidia’s) 40nm yields are fine. The rumors you are hearing are baseless." soo "Senior manager from Nvidia" how did that work out for you:roll:

SORRY i could not resist:D

Nvidia has just set a new record for most PR FUD ever. It managed to just enrage quite a lot of fans - consumers that been waiting for like 12 hours, no wonder if subsequently ATI 5XXX sales skyrocket.

Just when you think that they can't give Charlie anymore validity........they do this. They make his job easy.

BTW, that thing better show up sooner than later cause 5870 prices need to drop.

Charlie is just a drama queen. Cooks it all up and serves it to his clueless readers. If you want actual truths you turn to people that write good reviews with solid comparisons. Until we have official info and a review or two to look at, it will be all bullshit speculation until then.

Being realistic it will most likely be on par performance wise with ATi but higher power consumption. Nvidia's driver team will make it scale better in SLi than CrossfireX scales with the 5xxx series. I'd assume Nvidia will sell at the current price/performance that ATi is selling at right now. Then ATi will most likely drop prices within a week to a month of Fermi's launch to keep the upper hand. But of course nobody knows for certain as I am just guessing based on trends, and not rumors from idiots like "Charlie the douche".

^ that tends to be how it goes, if history is any indication. However we've had generations break that (Geforce FX going slower, G80 going way faster)

Trends maybe but based on a now "old" G80 design from nVidia. Since Fermi breaks from this design, trends can't be relied upon. As Mussels says, generations changes have broken that and nVidia will need to prove they can do with the Fermi generation what they did with the G80.

Either way, I just want 5870 prices to drop. March is too far away. Maybe I can pick up a couple of GTX 260s or 285s to play with for a little. Havn't had a nVidia card since TNT.

edit: How about a little editorial from Guru3D, Hilbert, himself?
nVidia and its troubled GeForce 400 series

I see a few things that stick out to me in this. Derivatives will be here soon than everyone thinks. This seems to give credence to the "256 shader" Fermi I keep reading about on XS, B3D, etc.
Here's what we think is going to happen, during March we'll definitely see the launch of GeForce 470 and 480, though with low allocation and volume available until Q2. Once we hit Q2 expect a lot, seriously a lot of derivative DX11 class products for the midrange, entry-level and low-end spectrum as well. Why ? Well NVIDIA is late to the market, real late .. roughly six months ago GeForce 480 and 470 should have been released and the other planned products overlap that timeframe. The summer is going to be busy for NVIDIA, either that or they will be re-scheduling their product releases.

Mostly 470s initial availability and clocks lower than expected? (Tech Report suggested 725/1450 in their Fermi article)
Last week NVIDIA's board partners finally got samples of Fermi based products. This means a finalized package - with perhaps some clock changes at best. Most of the partners received a GeForce GTX 470....................What I will tell you is that the clock frequencies on these boards surprised me, the GeForce 470 seems to be clocked at roughly 650 MHz, that's lower than I expected. And that indeed will have an effect on performance. I think it's safe to that the GeForce 470 and 480 will be worthy competitors towards the Radeon HD 5850 and 5870.

Is he suggesting a 5890 version is coming?
But is it important for NVIDIA to deliver a knockout to the competition ? Well they would hope so, but no .. not really, as the current performance levels that ATI for example offers simply are superb already. Being six months late to the market does pose an issue, ATI will already be respinning and binning their upcoming products, clocked higher and they could match NVIDIA in either price or performance.

I think he confirms a lot of what Charlie has been saying without all the drama and easy to read on the eyes.

GTX 480 to launch March 26th

NVIDIA HAS REVEALED when it will unveil “The world’s fastest PC graphics gaming technology” and it’s all going to happen on the 26th of March 2010 from 6 to 7PM at PAX East. Indeed, Nvidia is launching Fermi, sorry, the GTX480 and GTX470 at a glorified LAN party in Boston.

If you hurry up and pre-register it’ll let you in for $50 and you’ll be allowed to attend the three day LAN party as well, although if you turn up late, that price goes up to $55. The good news is that press gets in free, so at least Nvidia will be able to smuggle in a few hacks without having to spend money on tickets for them, then again, a single day ticket for the Friday is $30.

Paper launch, anyone?

NVIDIA and its troubled GeForce 400 series

Today I wanted to write a little 'opinionated' editorial. Typically we do not address rumors and gossip. But an accumulation of things that have been going on over at camp NVIDIA and the Internet leading us to believe things are not as they should be. The rumors are creating a rather negative stigma for NVIDIA.

Last week most of NVIDIA's partner got sampled with the first GeForce 400 series graphics cards, and of course somebody somewhere leaked information towards a person which We'll just call 'Mr C', this friendly little fellah has an unnatural and seriously unhealthy attitude towards NVIDIA, I'm seriously afraid he's gonna stroke out some day. Take a chill pill man, it's just hardware.

This one's actually from Guru 3D and not the usual SemiAccurate. Seems nvidia are pissing a lot of people off lately... and raising Charlie's blood pressure.

699$ means the cost of waiting consumers. We waited so much that nvidia must give us at least gtx 470 for free!
Or they are doing the same strategy that ati did
making the chip smaller making it cheaper and waiting a month

no unveiling usually means officially releasing info like specs clocks etc, if anything this means that we "as in the public" aren't getting these cards unitil at least april/maybe even may.

one thing is for sure, Charlie seems to have been right about Fermi having alot of manufacturing problems, how many times has it been delayed now?

the 649 dollar pricetag was easy to expect since Nvidia priced the 8800GTX and the GTX280 about the same when they were released, I'm guessing that the GTX470 will cost about 450 based on nvidia's previous pricing.

. . . . . my hopes and dreams of getting a cheap HD5870 are dead now, i might as well start saving more.

Trust me it's no smaller. It would take years to redesign it so that it is smaller.

A die shrink does not take a year of engineering assuming the fab is ready to produce at the given nm.

A die shrink does not take a year of engineering assuming the fab is ready to produce at the given nm.

No but designing the chip so that it has a smaller footprint does.

Fresh news HD5850 slower then GTX470 but HD5870 is faster 13%

3Dmark Vantage Extreme
HD5850 = X6200 (i think should be more around X6400 but whatever)
GTX470 = X7100
HD5870 = X8000 +13%(its a score form old reviews)

Strange thing for me are the clocks of GTX470 810Mhz/3200...
