that minimum 12v current rating to me says 300w per card (nvidia thinks processors aren't important to 200w so that is fine, also no fans or other 12v devices allowed!!)

Hexus states you need another 250 Watts for SLI (2 cards). Bringing a grand total of 850 Watt for a PSU. I assume that if your do prefer SLI you would want a single 12v rail PSU which should bring around 60A or better for a 850 watt PSU.

Thats a mighty draw for a single card. However, i saw some stuff at Hexus with a Gigabyte Fermi card running that stupid super sled demo - not impressive - since when were demo's indicative of a cards power?
More importantly (and follow this logic closely)...
Gigabyte (same company at CeBit demoing Fermi) are releasing a super oc'd 5870 that they claim is close to the 5970 (which by default puts it also - in Fermi's best case scenario) close to the GTX 480.

So a company selling both cards has a single gfx card its says is close to the current dual champ which in most tech websites should be more powerful than the new NV offering.

its obviously bs, the HD5970 is between 35 and 60% faster than the HD5870 and who would believe that if you increase the core clock by a measly 11% you would outperform something thats 35% faster. . . . . . . . . I know most of here wouldn't.

my worrie is whats with skipping the whole GXT 3xx numbering and going to GTX 4xx ,

Already ATI is bringing out a new card every month from budget to Enthusiast gaining huge amounts of investors and stakeholders meaning that there current net worth is major !

Nvidia has no solotion and is getting major client loss while ATI makes history ,, First DDR5 cards and First DX11 cards ,, well also the first to use advanced Tessellation Tech , despite the old XT 1xxx cards that had a example of Tessellation .

Does it hurt Nvidia every time they have top print AMD on their boxes now?

I would like to know if they are going to have solder migration problems on these cards with that power draw and large die? smaller process means smaller contact pads, and thus smaller amounts of solder, higher power draw and heat means the chances of a more resistive contact point will migrate and break as the chip expands and contracts with heat and cooling cycles.

In a single-rail, those 42A would have to be shared with the CPU and other 12V components.

But 300W on a dual means one has to provide at least 25A plus whatever the rest of the rail needs in 5V, 3V etc... So something like a SilverStone 850W dual rail that can provide 30A, and 35A means that if you have nothing else on your rails it still won't be enough for a SLI setup with any sort of headroom.


Testing has shown a good quality single is better than a dual.

no, thats BEST case. since the card can draw upto 25A on its own, that means your PSU going to need multiple 25A rails at minimum - and most dual rail (and above) PSU's these days love sitting around the 18A-22A range.

Oh, thanks God, I was starting to think I was the only one that could understand that requirement. That remembered the amperage asked for previous cards and could make an educated guess of the actual requirements for this card...

Even my old 8800GT asked for 35A if I'm not mistaken (or 38A not sure) so 42A didn't really look like a lot in comparison.

GTX470 has 2 six pin connectors and looks a little bit shorter than a GTX260 (might be the perspective, in any case it's not longer). So

1- it's nowhere near the rumored 300w.

2- it doesn't look like it needs much more heat dissipation than last gen.

I'm starting to smell the BS of past rumors...
