but you guys should really keep in mind that even higher performance of nVidias Fermi won't let ATi drop prices when TSMC isn't able to get enough chips out AND we know that they still have some problems with the 40nm process

it all boils down to pricing and avalibility which i kinda expect nv to have the same issue as ati did at launch but it didnt take but 45 days to get the stores stocked after launch. we should see 10%-15% price drops from ATI by june/july

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meld...ung-der-GeForce-GTX-470-enthuellt-946411.html

Here's a site for those of you who know German who claim to have a few early benchmarks for the GTX 470 and 480. I'm not a German speaker myself so I'm not familiar with the site and don't know if its reliable or not but the google translate goes something like this:

Nvidia's Fermi: performance of the GeForce GTX 470 unveiled

Nvidia graphics cards still have Fermi end of March in coming, but heise available online exclusively first benchmark values of a prerelease version of the GeForce GTX 470th Accordingly, the DirectX-11 graphics card in 3DMark Vantage is more powerful than 5870th between the Radeon HD 5850 and HD To reach the GTX 470 in 3DMark Vantage (X-Mode) 7511 points, a Radeon HD 5870 with 8730 points, more clearly. , A HD 5850 stood at 6430 points, which reached GeForce GTX 285 in the same test system, 6002 points. The Performance preset shows a similar picture, however, is the Radeon HD 5870 (17303), only slightly ahead of the GeForce GTX 470 (17156). A Radeon HD 5850 reached 14,300 points.

Especially interesting are the results of the Unigine benchmarks, based on DirectX 11 and uses tessellation. Nvidia announced in advance, would be the Fermi-enabled graphics cards, the HD-Tessellation 5800er cards significantly outperform. This we were able to adjust the preliminary benchmark results on the CeBIT in Hanover. Thus achieved at a fourfold anti-aliasing, the GeForce GTX 470 averaged 29 frames per second (fps), a Radeon HD 5870 around 27 fps, the HD 5850 only 22 fps. At eight times the anti-aliasing, however, the performance of the GeForce GTX 470 breaks strong. Then reached only 20 fps, a Radeon HD 5870 is just under 23 fps faster, the Radeon HD 5850 (19 fps) is subject only slightly.

Also in the BIOS of the preliminary test card, we were able to take a look. The shader cores were running with 1255 MHz, the GDDR5 memory, with only 1600 MHz (read-write clock). Nvidia seems much slower than AMD's memory tact, which is similar but by the higher number of data lines again. However, the specifications of the card are not yet final, therefore the test results can also enjoy with caution, in the 3D performance, however, no major changes more likely.

Currently, even rumored to be that the graphics chip, the GeForce GTX 480 will not have the full 512 shader cores. Even Nvidia would not confirm to us in conversation that the GTX 480 actually has 512 cores. Thus, it was pointed out that it had presented in January, although the GF100 at full expansion (ie 512 cores), but had never explicitly announced that the GeForce GTX 480 actually has this number of cores. In fact, Nvidia has for some time after the architectural idea in January, only the names of the first two high-end graphics cards announced.

Clarity, it will be until the 27th Give in March, when Nvidia said it will officially launch the card. Nor even appear to board partners are not much about the upcoming cards to know what some manufacturers were upset. So Nvidia will inform his partner until next Monday on the final specifications, the first cards to arrive two weeks later in their camps. While some partners were already confident that quite sufficient quantities of the new cards from the 29th March will be out of stock. Concerned about them, but the price / performance ratio.

470 looks tiny.

Made this for size comparison. Don't see the PCI-e 'finger' on the other card, so I lined them up with SLI bridges. Even core is in different position, these are no GTX 260/280. GTX 470 has been made cheaper from the start.

I'm sick and tired of seeing that Unigine benchmark, they need to stop spamming than bench and show a game already

and at the end they show nfs(i think its nfs right) with nothing going on, no cars going buy . . . nothing, that really tells you how the game plays dosen't it.

I wanna see how these card do in reality.

Now you all can see why they were so hush, hush about performance all this time. That video was more informative then I expected. Although heavily edited we really don't know what clock rate was used.

Edit:
BTW: That video is using an unreleased version of Heaven Benchmark (1.1). Something we don't have at the moment because at the time of this edited post 1.0 is the only version available. I also assume that 1.1 may have been heavily modified for the GTX 480.

Took a GTX480 to beat the HD5870, and by "not-so-worth" the waiting time. :ohwell:

the GTX480 seemed quiet smooth in that heaven benchmark but still I was expecting crazy performance from these cards.

That 3 monitor setup display (AKA eyefinity) with 3D seems pretty damn awesome but cant be bothered with that, I actually want 3D, been waiting for these cards for too long now, cant wait for march 26th, then these beastly heaters will melt our rigs

I watched the vid again, and I noticed the performance gap is almost x2 (~20FPS).

I guess thats ok...

yea, and go by the numbers, cause on the Heaven benchmark the scaling of the graph is bs'ed lol 683 points is half of 734?

It's a subliminal graph

I did happen to see that but also .....

First off the Graph he showed us I did not find all that impressive especially for a card that is coming out 6 months later than the 5870.

Second look really closely they are also running the Heaven Benchmark @ high shader, x1 AF, and no AA. Now when I run my 5870 at that level I get a pretty smooth picture at the same resolution!

Last the way they where describing this card to take on the 5970 .... it won't even come close. Look at it running the 3 monitor set up ..... needs two GTX 480's..... Hmmm a 5970 could do that just as well! Well we won't even go there a single 5870 could do that!

I'm not saying it is an open shut case..... but it's not looking that impressive to me!!!

Still 6 months not that impressive ... plus is there a reason they are only showing the Heaven bench over and over..... what does it do in real games??? I'm starting to think that smei accurate might be right for once.

Folks that's Heaven 1.1 not Heaven 1.0. We have no idea how they tested this. And we can't test it ourselves because Heaven 1.1 isn't released yet. But rest assured the developers for Heaven benchmark 1.1 clearly state they've been able to provide a 30% boost using aggressive culling (which will make a difference for both makes of cards if true). I only hope that this boost wasn't designed just for one make of card but for both.

I hope not too! Although I am really interested still in Fermi. I really wonder what this card can do in things like folding and that. I am not big into folding at all..... shoot I don't even do it. But I can see the benefits for others with it!

480 = 10 FPS higher than 5870? not gunna cut it, when they use more power and cost more outright.

This is also a great point.... now the power requirements are still rumor I thought. But with enough people saying that this is a very power hungry card it is probably true!

Perhaps W1z can explain it better but from my understanding so far their aggressive culling should impact performance regardless of what video card is used. That's why the graphs is meaningless as the 5870 doesn't show any improvements as far as I can tell (subjectively). Now if they did something else to only show the 480 doing better while the 5870 remains the same IMO there were some other optimizations done. But again I think W1z can explain it better if he happens to venture into this thread.

Yeah! We all know that paying more means better performance. Thank you Nvidia for making us wait so much and pay more :p
In fact we were waiting for you to drop the 5000 series prices :D
