Good deal. I got something similar, but with water blocks. The cards came out to be slightly less than this deal, but still this a good deal. And when/if you decide you want to try Nvidia's version of Eyefinity you can with these cards.

Found a GTS250 for $100 shipped on EVGA:
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=253929

Missed out on a Folding Deal from heaven, had a QX9650, Q9650, E8400, 10 gpu's, and all sorts of cheap goodies. A 1000W OCZ PSU for $75!!!!

Another good deal, a Noctura 12P for $25 shipped w/o fans. That would make an excellent cooler for a cruncher,

I don't get that the GTS250 is considered a good deal, but when I try to sell my GTX260 (192) for around $120 shipped, I get nada. Just don't get it.

Sorry, $120 is a hell of a deal and people but people are looking in the sub-$100 range mostly.

What do the new 260's go for? $175? Guess more performance gain/dollar going used there than a GTS250 since they are $140 new.

Cant step up to anything anyways. They quite making the GTX200 series cards and dont have the 400's available.

Sucks the only "step up" is to a 260, 9800, or 9500:

http://www.evga.com/stepup/

GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 - 55nm (896-P3-1255-AR)
GeForce 9800 GT (512-P3-N973-TR)
GeForce 9500 GT (512-P3-N954-TR)

Hey Fit, wanna bet those 260's Evga is allowing Step Up's to are 275's with disabled shaders? :p

Why Intel so much? I stopped using Intel for CPUs a while ago. I like Intel Wifi but not CPU. Why pay an arm and a leg for an Intel i7 when I can get an Phenom or whatever for less that will do what I need it to do and more. Right around the corner are 6-core CPUs from both Intel and AMD. I don't know about you but, I like paying less for my equipment.

Because he already has the Intel cpu. It's senseless to upgrade everything, when all he needs is one component to get the performance he needs. A cheap used 775 board is all he needs.

And AMD setup for him IS NOT an upgrade. It's exactly what you are against: extra money for little to no gains. Q6600 to Phenom II is a cross grade, not an upgrade. If he grabs a low end Phenom Quad, like the 600 series, it's actually a downgrade.

I have no brand loyalty. I pick the best in a price range. My price range for the last 2 builds just happened to be upper end. Unfortunately, AMD has nothing up there. If they would've made 12cores for AM3, that's where my money would have gone.

I see. You might be able to find a decent used 775 board w/ocing abilities for cheap.

As of now that's the plan. Wile E would you agree that upgrading his GPU would be more beneficial than upgrading the motherboard given an $80 budget? I personally think so but I'll take your advice given you disagree with me. :)

He's currently running an HD 2400. I sold him my PSU for cheap and installed it for him so he's got 700W of power for whatever.

GPU is always the best upgrade path for better gaming performance. Especially since he already has a quad.

Definitely upgrade the GPU. That HD2400 is way more of a bottleneck than the Q6600 is. Even just any of the ~$100 GPUs out now would be a significant upgrade imo, and that's assuming retail prices.
