yay, i can't wait for September and October was my birthday, i hope someone will gift me HD 6870 yay

hmm everyone said crysis was suck for ati but every time i see the bench in TPU its seems ati card always have more performance than nvdia counterpart

yea were talking crossfire not single card

Well even though this isn't 68xx series related. I just ran some tests of the few games I currently have installed.

System Specs:
965 x4 BE @ 4ghz
8gb DDR3 1400Mhz 6 6-6-18
HD 5850's @ 825/1000
Win 7 x64
Catalyst 10.8 w/ 10.8a CrossFire Profile
Using 60 seconds Fraps when no bench avail.
All settings in their respective games are maxed out. 1920x1200 resolution

Dirt 2 Benchmark
Single card: 65.6 avg ~ 57.4 min
CrossFire: 107.5 avg ~ 90.6 min +41.9 fps avg.

BFBC2 [Multiplayer Map Laguana, 10 ping and all alone]
Single card: 60.1 fps
CrossFire: 90.2 fps +30.1 fps

Mafia II Benchmark [PhysX off]
Single card: 48.9 fps
CrossFire: 86.2 fps +37.3 fps

Left 4 Dead 2 [Dead Center/Hotel] Bench started at same time when player is controlled
Single card: 155 fps
CrossFire: 226 fps +71 fps

Thing i can't understand is that you get exactly the same performance of 5870/2x5870 with just a light core overclock.

Yup, and the whole reason I got 5850's instead of 5870's. The extra shaders just don't make much of a diffrence most of the time.

W1zzard got 26fps with a single card and a bit over 40fps with CrossFire. Scaling seems to be decent for him.

yea single card i get around 38 crossfire i get 43 at least right now

if it was only at crossfire performance i will say they scale well but you get this with a single card also, i have seen people pushing the 5850 to 1000 core clock to beat 5870. Good performance. :toast:
And you can keep your cards i think :)

Given the price 5850's really are the cypress of choice IMO, from all the testing I did with my 5870 vs 5850 at the same clockspeed, the 5850 was on average 3% slower.

here's hoping they can pull that same feat off again with the 6850.

lulz at the L4d2 bench. I mean at 155 is crossfire needed? Just to let you know I did the same bench and I got 191 single card. Could it be the CPU?

Gosh yes it's needed :D
I like running most games if I can @ AA=16x & AF=32x with everything set to Ultra Quality. Currently Left 4 Dead 1 runs nice and smooth with these settings. L4D2 does not I am forced to drop the AF to 16x.

Looks like this thread will have to now be renamed to:

Can't wait anyone know how much i could sell a Sapphire 4850 1gb for? was thinking $80-100? not for sure

I sold mine for $45 without a cooler as they are one generation old, and despite being a really awesome card they were a bit on the weak side until you put them in xfire or overclocked the crap out of them.

I got my 4870 for $80 a month ago, with the same cooler as on the Palit Dual Sonic version.
It stays at 42c idle with 40% fan, and it's pretty quiet. I guess I have some overhead but I have never even attempted to overclock it.

I'll try overclocking it when I get my new 6870/6850.

Also, I'd probably sell it for $80 around then just because I know that's what I can get for it. Why sell it for $40 if you can get more out of it? That's a few extra beers to enjoy the 6 series :)

I think the 4850 would go for around $60 or $55

EDIT: Now that I think about it if you add the expense of a cooler $45 sounds about right for a bare card.

more than $55. 8800GTS G92's are selling for $60-80 on here and the HD 4850 is on par or outperforms it. So i'd say $70-85 is appropriate for the 4850.

OT: i may try to sell my HD 5770 right before 6 series launches depending on performance. The HD 6770 is gonna have to be around 20% faster tho for me to warrant the purchase. I wonder if there'll be such a huge gap between the HD 68XX and HD 67XX series as there is in the 5 series.

you can get 4850 1gigs for $100 new and $85 after rebate so 2 4850 would be about $70 used

Hopefully this time around AMD doesn't make the same mistake with the 6830 as they did with the 5830. Poor price / performance ratio and it was too long for a mainstream card, which forced many of us to settle for a 5770. Of course the 5770 is a nice card, but if you wanted something between the 5770 and 5850 (which never came down to MSRP price) there was no real option.

Yes that bad move. HD 5830 was a waist of PCB.

If you can get a 5830 cheap ( Cheapest here is £130 matching it with the average price of a 5770) Then they are good, especially if you stick an after market heat=sink on them.

Hell for the same price I'd get the 5830 just because it supports double precision something somethings.

THe problem with the 5830 is that it seems that ATI underestimated how well the GTX 460 was going to perform and seemed to have switched from 1200 SPUs to a measly 800 during development. This did 3 things wrong:

1. Too expensive for its performance bracket, at launch it cost over $200 (many vendors are still selling theirs for over $200). The $200 is a big psychological barrier for buyers.
2. Made the 5830 slower than the 4890. People, at launch had 2 choices, for a $200 4890 which was faster or a ~$230 5830 which was slower.
3. The performance was far closer to the 5770 in terms of performance than it's Cypress 'brother' the 5850 which made the 5770 and the 5850 more attractive. People felt that the extra money for the 5830 was not worth it over the 5770 or they decided to go 'all the way' with the 5850 since the 5830's performance was not satisfactory enough.

The only people who bought 5830s in large numbers were OEMs and put into prebuilt computers.

Is the 4890 really faster than the 5830? I thought 4870 came close to 4890 performance once you overclock it. I guess my 4870 isn't as crappy as I thought it was.

Still, I'm not even remotely interested in any of the 5xxx series now. You'd have to give it to me for free if I were to use it. Unless maybe the 5970 came way way down in price, then I might consider it.

Who needs a 5xxx series when the 6xxx series is so close? I have $700 saved in my personal safe for the 6xxx series. Do you think this will be enough for a 6850 or a 6870 at launch?

Oh god. I really really hope those are real. I can't wait to go down to my buddy Johnnie's house and brag to him about how I finally have something better than his GTX 480.

Please, oh please ATI. Please allow me to purchase a 6870 for less than $700! I really want one!

Oh, and if you're reading this ATI marketing. Throw in a few McDonnalds coupons. You know how I love that nasty fattening stuff ;)

New Radeon HD 6870 log plastered all over the net. :D
