I'd like to remind all and sundry about the hype surrounding the closely guarded 6970 specs. A lot of folk thought it would be a monster (myself included) but it turned out a mixed bag.
I wouldn't associate lack of leaked specs as an indicator of performance.

Besides, any dual gfx config from the top two players from both camps is bound to be castrated to satisfy power PCIe requirements.

I took it to mean the air would be sucked in via the back portion of the card and exhausted out via the backplate. Essentially like the HD5970 now but with the radial fan sucking from the back instead of through the top. For a radial fan this actually makes sense (as long as the blades are big enough so it doesn't have to spin too fast).

Coupled with the vapor chamber cooling this could be enough to cool the card without having to go triple slot (fouling potential crossfire setups).

well its good to see AMD didn't design the card around specific cases seeing how most OEM's use a top mounted PSU. heck most cases use a top mounted PSU.

for me this card would suck in nothing from my PSU in my lian li RF case, from the punched grill side panel of my HTPC and unless i had 2 of them the big gaping hole in between the PSU and card in my haf932 :toast:

I disagree. Most people who shed 700+ USD for such a card have a high end case with bottom mounted PSU. Even if there is a good space between the card and the PSU, the heat from the PSU will rise and get sucked into the card, and don't forget that most PSU fans don't spin fast most of the time so the exhaust air won't be pushed far away from the case. :shadedshu

I disagree. If the case has decent airflow, it's completely fine.

i have owned all of the ati/amd dual cards outside of the 5970 and i own several cases none of which the whole world ended because the PSU was at the bottom with the video card. in fact find me a video card that does not draw air the same way this one does. is there some magical gpu god that makes GPU's that have fans on the top?

3870X2 draws from the bottom

4850X2 draws from the bottom

4870X2 draws from bottom

5970 draws from bottom

7950GX2 SAME THING

9800GX2 still the SAME THING

i am seeing a pattern here its like video cards all have the SAME BASIC COOLER

Guys either you misunderstood the cooler design or I did. The way I saw it, this card will suck the air from the rear, in other words: will suck air from outside the case, the same holes where it usually exhausts air through. I saw a cad drawing on youtube supporting this a while ago, but I can't find it now.

BTW see my system specs, I now have a reference 5870 and I'm not new to the these stuff so I know how coolers were/are designed.

It sucks air in through the fan and out the back/front. That video you saw was not real. I'm sure it's been tried in engineering stages but the design is not efficient.
