Worth it?

To sum it up in not many words

was going to get a £33 500gb western digital caviar blue, but for £36 i can get a Samsung f3 1tb, i won't use the space difference, as i barely fill a 250gb drive now, but i heard the Samsung drives are faster and more reliable then the WD drives, is this true?

I would get the bigger drive simply because it's bigger. You may think that you wont fill it but then you can always just set up backups for yourself and who ever.

They all have the same reliability. They're all built the same using the same parts etc. etc. Plus, if they do end up going wrong the big three HDD companies all have very good RMA service.

Well I have both, the Blue holds the OS and some and the Sammy holds the rest. The F3 is definitely faster but more noisier.

as for reliability we'll talk again in a few years...

I dont know how i can tell you if anything is of value to yourself but imo i would get the F3 as it is only £3 for double the space. Cant go wrong with an F3 and i think the differences in the drives are negligible.

WD are the brand of choice for me, but really all of the big three are good.

You should get the Sammy, because it's twice the capacity at the same price - £3 difference is f* all. As others have pointed out, you will need the space eventually, so it's a no-brainer.

Personally, I like the 2TB Caviar Green. Huge capacity for under £60 at Novatech.

Contrary to popular belief, it does actually work quite well as a system drive too. That 5400RPM spin speed will of course make it slower compared to a 7200RPM 2TB drive though.

Okay so as for a DVD drive just go for anything that is known to be quiet, i would find one that is reasonably cheap and then google it to see what its like. Trust me there's nothing worse than a loud drive!

You should switch over to a flash drive for that(specifically windows 7), you can add your drivers and such to it after you are done buiding the installing flash drive. As far as dvd burners go, Asus LG NEC good to go, Samsung is ok. I've had some good luck with Lite-On but I "think" the most recent ones are NEC rebadges.

Yeah, pretty much. There's no enthusiast drives around now, like the old Plextors.

Heck, these things are so cheap nowadays that if they break after a few months they're not worth the time and possibly money to RMA under warranty.

Bad News, i forgot the password to my scan account and couldn't get back to the deal in time before it changed, should i go for the 500gb f3 for £28, and how easy would it be to RAID them at a later point

And does anyone know any good ram? (looks like this is going to turn into a partial rebuild

If you need decent ddr3, look into the Vengeance lineup.

Oh and RAID is rather simple. I suggest if going to do that, get a seperate controller.

For £35 cant really go wrong, plus its 1.5v so there is a lot of headroom.

I Only have 2 DDR3 slots and i'm removing the DDR2 (yeah i have both :cool:

), so would it be best go for speed with dual channel or buy 1 4gb in case i need more later
