Yeah because a console that you can upgrade will automatically allow for all the stuff a PC does....
Think before you post.

oh god. basically a console is a simplified computer. If you make a console thats upgradable your basically making it like a PC, just itll be dedicated to games/entertainment then other things that a PC is used for now. It would defeat the purpose of a console if they were upgradable.

I'm with you on this. Consoles users do not want to tinker or worry whether the new game on the horizon will play at acceptable FPS (or even play at all) on their current form of hardware, no, they want it to plug and play; AKA the whole point of this particular side of game business.

I remember when the Original Need For Speed Underground came out for both XB and PS2 and I was running it on Both a PC and a Laptop with a 9700 Pro and a 9800 256. I remember using optimized defaults (best for everyones settings) which disabled graphics customization and Then I noticed there was Customization of Graphics, I turned up every detail in the game and noticed there was a major difference without any performance hits. I compared XB to Best for everyone settings on PC and both were the same. I upped the Graphics on the PC and Laptop and to Others Surprise the PC Version looked superior.

Sega did this afew times. Sega Genesis into Sega CD ito Sega 32X until they release the Sega Saturn, then Sega Dreamcast which then the new Sega CEO made the big mistake of cancel the Dreamcast, despite record sales.

Good for the new Xbox coming out should be based on HD 7870M.

Exactly. The Genesis was such a great modular platform. Nintendo did upgrades to a degree as well. N64 had the RAM pack and the 64DD. Jaguar had the Jaguar CD.

I do hope M$ learns from Sony with it's next console. PS3 was hurt a bit by continuing PS2 sales. Nintendo has faced similar issues on the handheld front. New console should mean cutting off the old.

yup

microsoft is probably just trying to cash in on the fact that the next windows will support arm and if they simplify the os and create some cheap xbox tablet or something they can cash in on those games even though they might be available for other arm devices but some will be xbox only just like sony does for the xperia line.

Think before you post.

So whats the point in wasting money on upgrading consoles? You buy a new gen. of console when it comes out and that's it. No need to upgrade and worry about sys req. for years. That's the main reason most people buy consoles. You wan't to spend money on upgrades? Buy a PC and you can play the latest games in 60+ FPS and ultra high resolutions. plus MAKE games, watch internet porn, troll on forums, watch cat videos on YT. Oh the possibilities are endless.

It sounds to me like this is pretty much just a Windows Phone with a console shell. It doesn't play actual Xbox games, just downloadable content. I think it is going to sell terrible or have a bad case of mistaken identity thinking it is a fully featured Xbox 360 console. It is the boxed retail games that sell consoles, not the cheapos that are downloaded.

No way, i was just thinking the same thing
I think the idea is similar to an Apple TV, a media streaming device that can also play some games. A bit pointless as a 360 can do all that.

Look at it this way when Kids and People See the Stuff on Shelves it makes them want to buy it, not if its digital download

I do hope M$ learns from Sony with it's next console. PS3 was hurt a bit by continuing PS2 sales. Nintendo has faced similar issues on the handheld front. New console should mean cutting off the old.

The PS3 was hurt by a lack of backwards compatibility and a $600-700 price tag at launch. Most issues with consoles are not because of their previous platform stealing sales, that will always happen. It has to do with their new platform not being good enough. The 3DS for example failed to sell at $300 or $350 at first, but once they lowered the price it was worthwhile. Why are people going to pay $300+ to play the same games they already play on their DS? It probably also doesn't help that the only thing that seperates a DS and a 3DS is a 3D screen.

The PS2 was like the best selling consoles of all time. If the PS3 had software emulation for PS2, or was always backwards compatibile, it probably would have done incredibly well.

$700 PS3? $350 3DS? Please tell me you're talking about Australian dollars.. Or perhaps day 1 eBay prices..?

Oh, and that is the most ignorant comment on this thread yet. But I'll restrain myself from not bashing you for it. A lot of people seem to be doing that already. Bashing others that is.

I was $100 of on the PS3, launch models were $500 and $600. My bad. The initial investment was about $700 though when you considered Tax and a single game. The 3DS was $300 most places and the price was dropped to a little under $200 after sales were marginally terrible. Once again, I cannot mechanically recall the exact prices of things several years away.

Really? From a hardware perspective they are basically the same thing minus the 3D Capabilities. Oh wait, sorry, the 3DS is a Gyroscope and Accelerometer for even more gimmicky bullshit. In terms of actual processing power, the visuals on the 3DS are almost identical to those on the DSi (sometimes looking worse since that 3D is atrocious).

A large number of the extra's on the 3DS are just software things added to make the system seem like more than a one-trick pony.

3DS had a $249.99 MSRP and dropped to $169.99 7 months later or so. Sales were not necessarily "terrible", not at least compared to the 1st year sales every other gaming handheld has done up to now anyways. But I do agree that even at the $250, the 3DS was not justified.

I take it you haven't played a 3DS, have you? I'll also restrain from assuming things, but if you compare, say, Mario Kart 7 to Mario Kart DS, surely that statement would be revised. I'm not saying the 3DS is pocket-sized AlienWare, but it is significantly better than the DS. Trust me, if you would own both a DS and a 3DS, you would know.

Yes. That is twice the price. To your casual high school Joe who only get a $5/week allowance, that's a lot of money.
I was one of those back in the day, and I was lucky if my family would give me 1 game for christmas.

Things aren't the same as back then. Now mommy and daddy buy them w/e they want so they stfu and have a baby sitter :shadedshu

How else does a 10 yr old have an xbox 360 and PS3 with about 60 games each? That's some serious money.

I'm all about gaming, but kids don't buy anything with money they scrape together.

I'm not saying the 3DS is pocket-sized AlienWare, but it is significantly better than the DS. Trust me, if you would own both a DS and a 3DS, you would know.

Mario Kart 7 also came out 7 years after Mario Kart DS. Even on identical hardware games tend to max out the systems much further on in the lifecycle--launch title games always look worse than EoL-era games. Comparing something like Halo 3 and Halo Reach you can see this difference.

I'm not expecting the 3DS to be a portable super-computer, but it's nowhere near the visual capabilities of the Vita, and isn't even as good as an what the iPhone is capable of. If the visuals are better it's not by much. I skipped the 3DS, and have only briefly dealt with a display unit one a few times.
