Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
apple makes the best. deal with it.
Can someone please give me some pants? I just soiled mine laughing uncontrollably at the blatant fanboyism... Its like me saying Bose makes the best speakers... when in reality its overpriced and over marketed products with little ear to quality (though I would say Macs are not crap, they are certainly overpriced and marketed).

Factoid: It would take 855 4K (3840x2160) monitors to represent everyone in the world as a pixel.

If you had 855 4K monitors you could surround yourself in circle of 45 monitors around, 19 monitors high for a total resolution of 172,800 x 41,040.

It's estimated that 11,000+ pornographic movies are produced every year ("to disc" releases, not online). With 855 monitors, you could watch all of them in just over a day. However, to keep up with every new Youtube video, you would need to watch approximately 5 videos per screen which becomes possible with such a high resolution.

To answer your post: if you take the arbitrary "unibody design", we are looking at about every laptop in production. As for screen size (I assume you mean resolution) who wants to pay an extra $800 for 1600p "retina".

unibody design, the weight and the 1600p screen is what makes up the price.... you are trying to compare apples and oranges. pc laptops are flimsy garbage, apple laptops are superior build quality and design. apple haters need to get over it. then we can move on to seeing high res + high pix density become the norm.

My 2 cents:
Resolution is useless unless a panel has a refresh rate > 100Hz
60Hz = Headache for me.....
I want a 1080 display at 120Hz for <$100!
It's do-able, why not?

I'm keen for higher resolution monitors to become standard myself. A 4K/UHD monitor at a desktop size of 27" like my current monitor would actually work very well, too.

However, I don't see why people are so keen on scaling to keep screen elements the same size. The whole point of those elements getting smaller, including things like the text you're reading now, is to get more screen real estate. Scale it up and you've just lost that primary advantage just to make it look smoother. At best, it should be switchable, allowing the user to decide what they want.

You'll still get your smooth, hi-res pictures (I'm thinking hi-res photos from quality cameras here) and game graphics without scaling up these things.

What people are worried about is that a typical icon, button or rendered font letter is 16x16 pixels and would be microscopically small on a 4K/UHD. I sympathise with that concern. However, in windows, and in practice, the use of higher DPI fonts, and "large icons" solves the problem 99% of the time. I don't need "more things" just "what is there more readable". In my case, I like to refer to an A4 PDF being readable when displayed full screen.

ROFLMAO. My flimsy POS netbook is 4 years old. Take care of your stuff. I am sure companies could make something like Apple, but the patent trolls would sue the pants off of them. If by superior build quality do you mean the highest margin of any laptop (28-37%) than sure maybe Apple is onto something.

Due to the size of the US content delivery is horrible. WAN acceleration technology at the ISP gateway is going to drive the next content delivery system to consumers, its going to require ISP's and content providers to work together, or end up in the lap of a couple larger conglomerates.

I have already replaced one Mac that a user/owner just HAD to have. He now uses his Toshiba ultrabook.

While I want higher resolution and pixel density, I don't want it at the price that Apple is raping people with.

On plus side OLED and 4k are likely to be bundled together. Those Sony/Panasonic panels should be on the market this year.

I'd be happy with just a 1080p OLED monitor. OLED alone will be a revolution in desktop displays. It'll get rid of motion blur and give wide viewing angles for a start. Adding more resolution as well really is the icing on the cake.

apple products have pushed consumer level high res + high density devices

porn can always be higher resolution

The fact Apple can do this (one of many examples) is why they earned their scrutiny.

As for the monitors, they order high density panels from LCD manufacturers because it's something they want to offer in their products. Apple's market share isn't large enough to encourage those manufacturers to bring the same panels to the TV/PC market so they do limited production runs exclusively for Apple. There could be more to that as well--perhaps Apple makes them sign a contract not to release them to the broader market but that is theory. Anyway, it's no different than Thunderbolt, Firewire, and Lightning. They are technologies that Apple experiments, uses for a period, and subsequently abandon it.

If HP, Samsung, Panasonic, or some other OEM started putting in massive orders for high density panels, they would gain broader market proliferation.

Another, more detailed source then:
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/0...-on-os-x-to-prevent-latest-critical-exploits/
Apple can quickly update a malware definition file called Xprotect.plist, and OS X will check a secure Apple server for these updates on a daily basis. As of Friday, Apple has blacklisted the latest version of the Java plugin in Xprotect.plist, requiring a newer version to run Java applets in a browser.
They used Xprotect (anti-virus built into the OS) to disable Java from running on virtually all Mac OS X computers. Oracle has fixed the exploit in Update 11 and, as far as I can tell, Apple still hasn't allowed Java to function on Mac OS X computers.

This is the culture of Apple (walled garden), one most of us don't want to be a part of.

Until they replace LCD with better tech such as color filtered OLED or PLED, or at least make a generic or competing version of Light Boost for AMD, I can't see getting too excited about this. Then you have the fact that a lot of us prefer to economize and use our TVs for a gaming display, and you have to wonder if any 4k TVs will be affordable within the next 5-10 yrs, not to mention that it was hard enough just to get to 1080i broadcast level in the US.

Everyone has their own idea of what display nirvana is, but some of the setups I've seen, given the cost and visual tradeoffs, have me wondering what's the sense of it. For instance there's a guy on another forum whom spent at least $8000 USD on a setup that uses 3 Dell U3011 monitors placed vertically @ 5160x2560. When most responded that they couldn't stand the look of the huge, tall vertical bezels, he took offense to it.

Where did the rest of the expense go? Well, it has 4 EVGA Classified 4GB 680s in Quad SLI, and 8 OCZ Vertex 128GB SSDs in RAID 0. To each their own, but to me it looks like you're playing from behind prison bars. Personally I have a hard time adjusting to 16:9 still. On my 22" CRT I could use 4:3, 16:10, and often times 16:9. A 16:9 AR often makes the vertical view feel cramped. I can see why a lot of people were sad to see 16:10 go.

Possibly the best $400 upgrade I've ever made and absolutely, in my opinion, the best over-$200 monitor deal out there:
Auria EQ276W

Just upgraded a month ago from my old 28" 1920x1200 TN panel and wow it was worth it. I had been looking around for a while to get one of those 1440p IPS displays to let my 7970s strut their stuff but I needed a DP input, HDCP support, and a $450 max price - and that Auria monitor was the only one to tick those 3 boxes.

I knew it would be better but I had no idea that it would be such a night and day upgrade from my old panel. It's like my eyes are having an orgasm every time I play games on it... 1440p maxed out 60fps constant is a sight to behold!

The majority of cable is still SD, I could easily see it taking the better part of 10 years, and probably at least 10 years for HD to take over SD as the majority.

The cable companies are a monopoly, they can take their time, and they will.

sorry but I can't read on any further before responding. Cable companies will be dead in 10 years. They are completely failing to adapt to changing technology. Air wave had full 1080p on day 1 of the digital switch over(actually well before), while some cable packages STILL reduce it back to 720p! In 10 years we will be fully on digital distribution and net channels. coax? that'll be long dead. You'll have a net connection and a wireless phone. No cable, no satellite, no need.

"but my internets comes over cable" in 10 years fios will have taken over due to its overall better performance and scalability. Also large scale wifi.

cable companies are already bleeding due to the mobile market. In 5 years they'll all be dead. In 10 years your kids will be saying "what in the hell is cable?"
The fact Apple can do this (one of many examples) is why they earned their scrutiny.

I f'ing hate java, so this actually makes me want to give props to apple.

Just saw this thread, and my first reaction was that I was disappointed in the lack of higher resolution monitors at CES. Apart from the 4K TVs that I won't be able to afford for a long time.

Then I saw this article about a new acer laptop display.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6663/acer-shows-off-2880x1620-panel

If they can cram 2880x1620 into 15.6", that would be pretty high desnity.

Now just put that in a 24" or 27" monitor, and it would still look good to me.
