To do this you would need to gift your package to an original backer, they melt it (after 24 hours), then buy the LTI version and gift it back. Right?

I can do this for you if you want. Just send me a PM.

Added your info. :toast:

What does that even mean?

Original backers are those who bought pledges/ships during the original Kickstarter campaign. They all get lifetime insurance an the ships/packages they buy. New pledgers don't get this. So, they get an original backer to get it for them and gift it to them. Doesn't seem to be a 24 hour wait either as I did it for Fleurious and it took all about 10 minutes to get it done.

On the package you won, you should have lifetime insurance on your ship, since I originally bought it. :)

Ah. If I knew what LTI meant I would of been able to read that. Yes my ship does, and if I do go wannabe pirate it will be used often me thinks.

Even though insurance is free with the LTI ships it still takes time to get the ship back and LTI only covers the ship not the stuff in or on the ship.

Im not the most familiar with flying games like this; is a joystick that much worth it? I was a pretty decent pilot it Planet side 2 with my keyboard but I have a feeling that is a bit different. I was even thinking I might try using my xbox controller for flying.

Depends on how you want to fly.

Mouse is fine if your using a 3rd person perspective, but if you want to be in the flight seat then the stick is just so natural.

Is it worth it, I think it is. I personally have the x65-f, And I've owned hotas cougars, and X52's as well as a lot of cheap sticks. The quality change in sticks alone is insane. A cheap stick is like a $2 mouse, A better stick is more like your $50 mouse, whereas the top end stuff is a full metal naga. More buttons, less moving your hands, better ergonomics, metal instead of plastic.

If your not using your stick for more than a few hours a week then a cheap one is fine. Once you make that transition to a few hours a night then all of the above factors make the stick worth it.

There is also another train of thought regarding star citizen directly.

They plan to implement 6DOF flying.

That means

Yaw, Pitch, Rudder
Throttle, reverse throttle.
Slide left/right, Slide up down.

You don't need to map all of those directions, you can fly on 2 axis on a mouse with keys to roll, and keys for throttle. The Xbox controller cannot do as many axis and commands as a basic stick. You will always have to make a compromise with it. This is because you only have a certain number of fingers in key locations to actually push buttons.

Take a dogfight. Whilst moving about, you need targeting, shield balancing, guns, missiles, bomber targeting, countermeasures, and power management. You only have 4 buttons at your fingertips with the controller, and you have to stop turning to use the other buttons, making you an easy target.

A basic stick on the other hand. 1 hand does all the movement. You still have the thumb on that hand to operate 5 basic buttons. That's targeting, shield balancing, countermeasures, missiles, and target bombs. Your trigger finger still does the guns. Your other hand can now control the throttle and 4 buttons on the base of the cheap stick. Meaning you already have 3 spare buttons, and you can make one of those a shift key and double up on all commands, before you even have to look at the keyboard.

When you start to go up the pricing for sticks aside for build quality you also get better ergonomics and better button placement. 5 buttons on the top of the stick becomes 17, dual stage triggers, pinky triggers. Then the throttle unit does the same, your throttle + 4 buttons becomes, dual throttle + 20 buttons + mouse and scroll wheel. So you spend less time off your buttons in a fight.

If I had to pick 1 budget control system it would be stick and keys tho. In a flight/space sim expect to need a lot of commands. And expect to need them all at the same time!

This is a typical space sim keys layout.

If anyone is interested in a 225 dollar ship/pledge, the Drake Caterpillar is up for sale for this weekend only.

This is a good cheap stick if you're not looking to spend too much.
http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T...FS?ref=prid-20&tag=tec06d-20

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas isn't as good a deal as you might think. The stick itself isn't that well built, and the throttle element is lacking in buttons.

If I were going for a stick in the same budget range it would be the Thrustmaster T 1600M.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001S0RTU0/?tag=tec06d-20

It doesn't look as fancy but there are a few key product changes that make it a better stick. The sensors been the main change. It uses hall sensors rather than the T-flights pot sensors. That means less mechanical wear, and less chance that the sensors will start to spike after a few months of constant use.

The T-Flight has 10 buttons and an 8 way hat. -2 buttons for the rocker.
The T1600M has 10 buttons and a 4 way hat.

The hat is not needed if your using a head tracker. You can build one for pretty cheap, and if you decide to use your hat as a set of buttons then the 8 way should be mapped to a 4 way anyway since 8 way hats are awful for been able to hit every button independently.

The real advantage to the T1600m however is the fact it's ambidextrous. So if you want to use another one and use a full 6DOF setup then you can have matching sticks. With the T-flight you can't do this so easily as the stick is not reverse-able. Meaning you will have a non matching pair of sticks on the desktop.

If your dead set on the idea of a hotas throttle unit then I would suggest you double your budget and pick up a saitek X52. It has far more buttons, hall sensors, and 3 modes. Meaning it's a true hotas in regard to the fact you should be able to fly without ever having to touch the keyboard.

X52 has 22 buttons and a 4 way hat + 3 modes + a mouse wheel + 2 rotaries and a slider.

I have the x52 coming in the mail to replace my ST290 which serve me well.. as long as I kept it greased, lol.

I plan on welding together some mounts for the stick and the throttle. With a solid base, flightsticks work much better, even the cheap ones. :)

Don't expect the mouse to be any good on the x52. I had to disable mine because it used to wander all the time. You can turn it off in the control panel. In all honesty the mouse on the X65-f isn't any better :D So don't feel like it's a wasted component. Just put your regular mouse between the stick and throttle in case you need it for menu's.

There are a few X52 mods you can perform, Greasing under the spring is a good idea. It'll make the stick a lot smoother from the start. You can also make washers to go under the spring to increase the stick weight if you want.

I never used a base for the X52, It doesn't have the stick weight to warrant it. All I do is take the rubber feet and give them an alcohol bath every few weeks till they gain a little tack! Then just keep the desk clean and wipe the dust off the feet so it sticks again.

If your good with a welder then you should have no problems, I've been toying with the idea of doing something for mine closer to release date to free up some desk space. If I go that route tho I'll probably braze some box section into floor risers and mount directly to the floor. I'm not sure an Ikea desk is designed to be drilled and have mechanical pressure applied through it!

I have the x52 coming in the mail to replace my ST290 which serve me well.. as long as I kept it greased, lol.

I plan on welding together some mounts for the stick and the throttle. With a solid base, flightsticks work much better, even the cheap ones. :)

The last "new" one just dropped from amazon, had been watching it. My alert showed it jump to $200 a couple of nights ago, and this morning, it was cleared from my alert. Used only heheh.

*sigh* I gave in and grabbed the Cutlass. I figured if I wanted ONE ship to have LTI on, it was a damn pirate ship, so I gave in :slap:. Damn, I've spent too much on this game heheh. Went into the updated Hangar, looking for my new toy, and waaaaaaay at the other end was this little model on a stand. "Drake Cutlass":roll: Looked like a ship outside the supermarket :) I felt like Stitch "Quick jump on, we'll escape!!!" :slap:

I decided to look at what ships there are available to get, in case I want something more than my aurora MR down the line. Gosh these things are expensive. Thanks again Erocker for that giveaway.

If I do get another ship, I think I will try to find out how I want to play this game first. Do I really want to be a wannabee pirate, or worse...
