MSI Teases Transparent TwinFrozr Cooling Solution

MSI just teased a new VGA cooling solution it's working on, which will likely feature on its upcoming Radeon R9 290 series graphics cards. It's expected to be a long and tall variant of TwinFrozr IV designed for high-end chips like GK110 and "Hawaii," and will feature a frosty see-through acrylic shroud covering the aluminium fin-stack heatsink. TwinFrozr IV is MSI's workhorse VGA cooler for its Gaming, Lightning, and HAWK series of factory-overclocked graphics cards.

Interesting choice. Substituting a heat absorbing metal shroud with a plexi one that doesn't.

No doubt it will include an embedded LED, and the crowd will go wild.

The shroud being metal has no effect on heat dissipation. If you think the metal is absorbing heat from the GPU, try touching the metal of the shroud while the card is in use, it doesn't even get warm to the touch.

It's best when you can get both though am I right!

I honestly really like msi's twin frozr coolers because the lack of plastic.

I like this as it allows the end user to paint the shroud whatever colour matches their system. I hope MSI has the foresight to allow for this in the warranty clause, and also makes the shroud easily removed so that chances of physical damage while removing/replacing it are minimized.

Clear is kind of lame. What MSI should really do is make OEM shrouds in various colors, and make them easy-ish to swap out for DIYers with basic mechanical skills using a screw driver at most. I bet they could sell a decent number to people who would want to color-coordinate their gear. I understand why OEMs are scared to do this though with so many klutzes out there they don't want to deal with unnecessary RMAs.

I don't see much point in it unless they are going to light it up or something. If it was fully transparent it might look cool to be able to see the insides but its smokey so.....I think I'd rather have a solid metal shroud that helps to stiffen the card.

I hate everything about MSI don't want to start a flame war but this company is totally unreliable. Customer service is a joke. Life span of products is totally lame. RMA is not working as it should for personal customers. I don't have a single good word to say about MSI.

and oh, it is much sexier ... for the company, not for the consumer. It's funny how they "tease" it, I was expecting some heavy marketing spin to make it seem attractive.

As a person who used and reviewed dozens of MSI products over the past 4 years, i disagree.

Probably depends on which geographic distribution area you're under.
My last contact with MSI was to ascertain the warranty status of an imported (new) motherboard. MSI have all but withdrawn from my local market (New Zealand) concerning motherboards and anything other than mostly reference graphics cards. A 3 week wait for MSI to get in contact with me resulted in them giving me an answer (seemingly) to someone else's query (non-motherboard related). After another week of support-message-tag I was informed that MSI's warranty wouldn't cover a new motherboard imported from another distribution area (U.S.). Pretty sad for a tier one vendor.

It just looks bad with this heatsink. Admittedly though I'm not keen on plastic shrouds.

Yea have to say that plastic is a stupid choice... Has all the appearance of those cheap low-end Airsoft guns from Wal-Mart or Big5! In that market it’s used to make it well known it's a plastic toy... Not something I want to project from a $800+ ultimate graphics card. But we now see it as the dumbest trend as both the EVGA Classified and now MSI are on board.
