Why are you suggesting socket 2011, but also only suggesting a quad with HT? If you are going suggest a quad core, why not suggest the 4770k and a lot less expensive z87 motherboard. $350 for the CPU and $290 for the motherboard? Over a $320 4770k and a $150 z87 motherboard? Really?

That build will yield the same CPU processing power and be just as capable as drdna's suggested build, but has a considerably stronger video card and SSD. Reuse your Blackbird case, power supply and hard drives.

if drdna build would fit, this will fit. Honestly, I can't say I'm 100% sure it will fit. You can add a case to my build if you want, try to install the stuff in the blackbird case, and if it does fit, return the case you buy.

Ok, doing a little research, I've found out you currently have a Asus Striker Extreme ATX form factor motherboard, so the motherboard and CPU WILL fit in the Blackbird case. Only thing I would be worried about is the video card fitting, and I'm about 95% sure it will fit.

Yeah sure, with a 6core/12thread CPU, I totally agree. But that is not what you suggested. Why would the OP go for socket 2011 and only get a quad core? Is x79 really worth the extra cost without the 6/12 cpu? Why?

Guys I have a intel r core tm 2 extreme cpu q6850 , and a NVIDIA NForce 780i SLI 2. I changed the motherboard some time ago, I don't know if this info helps any?

In your setup you sent me you included a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, my machine now have a liquid cooling system, wouldn't I be able to use that one ? Just thinking maybe I would save a few $$

Probably not. With going from socket 775 to socket 1150, the mounting holes on the motherboards are spaced a little differently. Unless you change the CPU water-block in your current loop

Thanks guys for all your patience, but do I even need a video card, isn't the one I have good enough? I mean EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTX video card is great for video editing isn't it? I won't be doing any gaming. If so I'll save a bunch of money!!

the 8800gtx is nothing in comparison to what the GTX780 can do, gaming or video editing. It's up to you really. Personally, if I could afford it, I'd get the 780.

Think about it like this. You are upgrading so you can do your video editing faster right? If your video cards do the majority of the video editing work, and you keep the same video cards you have now, how can you expect to get any benefits from the upgrade? It won't be much, if any, better than what you have now.

his vido software supports amd cpu and ati gpu too. just read whole table from pdf you sry drnda have linked. not only till first 2 lines
and considering that firepro w7000 gpu = HD7870, r9 280x will fit all his needs just fine.
also dont forget although 780 contains cuda cores in calculations it isnt as good as quadro or tesla model. remeber how your wcg scores or whatever it is called changed after 780ti

Honestly, I starting to think you may be better off keeping the main parts of your current system and just do a video card upgrade. That would probably be your best bang for the buck.

cuda cores on 780 are not = to cuda cores on quadro or tesla and i dont mean just number of cores. cuda optimization is for quadro cards.
you guys realy should stop gaze at those sintetic benches in witch intel is way better then amd. for everyday use fx are as good as intel's cpus. that 8320 i have hasnt problems to run anthing i trow at it. and trust me i trow a lot. havnt tried video editing but i doubt it will slower with more then few secs from intel

Only difference was last April we were getting GPU work units that are processed with a video card, and now we are only getting CPU work units. My scores from last April were with a HD7970, which is basically the same as a R9 280x.

Oh and BTW, my score from yesterday is from both a i7 860 OC'ed to 3.15ghz and a i7 2600k OC'ed to 4.6ghz. A single HD7970 was able to beat both i7 CPUs by that much.

so you would replace the AMD gpu in my config snap shot with an Nvidia GPU like maybe the 760 or 770
760's run around $229 and the 770 around $329 so yet even cheaper.

You might even want to try just adding a 760 or 770 to your set up and see if cuda make enough of a difference to hold off on a complete upgrade of mobo ,cpu,ram,gpu.

But at the same time there are reports that Cuda doesn't help much, this may be a config issue but thought you should take a look.

Please list the specs of this system your are talking about.

You said the Blackbird had AMD cards in it at first, so does it have the original graphic card or cards or did you change them out to something else and if so to what?

About the RAM, your using a 32 bit operating system, which can only address 4 gb of system RAM. That includes the RAM on you video cards, sound card, etc.
