I'm using 13.12 with my 290X and don't think I'll be switching them

i am on the 14.2 beta and must say i am made up with them, ok i could gain a tiny bit in benches with 13.12 but it aint much %wise. not enough that you would notice xD

Overall, not a bad TIM job done by Sapphire.


The thermal tape over that area is totally F'd up which is why I've been having such high VRM temps.


As you can see, there has been some discoloration with the fact that the tape has not made contact with that part of the card for almost 2 months.


I've managed to take as much tape off on the double sandwiched RAM chip it was on to put on the one completely bare RAM contact space.



All this along with my AC-MX2, and here are my results:

Before (Core)
Idle: 38-40
Load: 78-80 (75% fan speed w/ BF4 for 2 hours 'Siege of Shanghai and Zavod 311')

After (Core)
Idle: 36-38
Load: 70-71 (75% fan speed w/ BF4 for 2 hours 'Siege of Shanghai and Zavod 311')


Before (VRM)
Idle: 40
Load: 90 (75% fan speed w/ BF4 for 2 hours 'Siege of Shanghai and Zavod 311')

After (VRM)
Idle: 35
Load: 70-72 (75% fan speed w/ BF4 for 2 hours 'Siege of Shanghai and Zavod 311')


The high GPU temps were also doing a number on my CPU and limiting my OC. Mind you, I have kept as many of the variables as I could the same; the ambient temp, all my fan speeds, PC hasn't been cleaned out or dust aired out. I'm just pretty shocked that QA could've missed such a big mistake on the application of the thermal tape. I always wondered if I got a bad batch of Tri-X cards, and then after I opened up the hood, low and behold the culprit flashed it's ass right in my face. In case some were also wondering, this card didn't have any "warranty sticker" on it anywhere. So don't be afraid to get a little handy and poke around to see how it looks for yourself. Maybe you could increase your card's efficiency just like I did! Thanks for reading

woah, that is seriously bad. I've just got a Sapphire too. You don't see those sorts of things until you remove the cooler, thus voiding the warranty, or when your GPU starts to have issues, just outside the warranty period. I'm very disappointed with their quality control, the memory pads and vrm pads are completely unacceptable. I wonder how many are affected, I think you should bring it to the attention of as many forums as you can.

It could have been worse. My MSI R9 290X has no thermal pads on vrm at all

I was more worried about potentially having those serious defects. However that's useful to know thanks, so they're not bothered about us removing the heatsink, do they say that on their website or is it just over the phone? Does it apply outside the US?

A guy at MSI global support said that removing stickers will void the warranty

If the card has no warranty void if damaged/removec stickers then the warranty will be intact.

The one Sapphire card I had didn't have any stickers and the same goes for the Gigabyte cards I have right now.

Finally got my RMA'd MSI R9 290 back and it works! Yay! Anyway, I've encountered a strange issue while playing Metro: Last Light where the card will run perfectly, solid 60FPS and then it'll just decide to drop to 20-25 and never go back up. I left MSI Afterburner running and, while it was showing high GPU loads, the Core clock was only running 600Mhz or less when the framerate drops. It's running at full spec when at 60FPS. Alt+Tabbing doesn't fix it, but loading the next part of the level sends it back up only to drop again randomly and stay down.

The core is OC'ed a bit to 1010Mhz, RAM 1300Mhz, but temps don't go above 85F, so it shouldn't be throttling and the throttling behavior I've seen in reviews doesn't seem to match what is happening while playing. It's almost like it's not thinking it needs to use boost clocks or something.

I was playing BF4 earlier for about 30 minutes and experienced no such issue, or while playing CoH2. Wondering if anybody else has expereinced this? I'm at work now, but when I get home I'll try it again and see if temps might somehow be an issue that I didn't notice before.

try increase power draw limit.

I have it at 15% right now, I'll give that a shot. I would think if the card was choked for power it would just crash or artifact.

Nope if the card hits the power limit it will drop clocks until it fits in the limit.

Interesting. I've got it at 50% now. Frame rate isn't crazy anymore. 1065/1300, Metro: LL benchmark always crashes (even at lower clocks) in different spots but 3DMark runs through with no issues. So I'm not sure what the deal is, haha.

what card do you have and what driver are you using?

Also I've had a problem tha't been annoying me lately. When I run GPU-z monitoring in on my seconds screen so I can watch temps and clocks I get frame rate drops at the smae rates as the sensor refresh rate in GPU-z. On the old version I had no such issues so any ideas on how I could fix this?
