MSI R9 290 OC temps at 94c while gaming

Hi All,

While playing Crysis 3, Sleeping Dogs, Watch Dogs, and other heavy games in less than 30 minutes, My temps reach 94c!

I wonder if it's my card or I just have bad case airflow. My case is Corsair c70 with 7 SP120's @ 1700 RPM

The case also comes with dust filters(does this obstruct airflow?) - should I remove the dust filters?

MSI gaming card? Yeah that's getting hot for sure. All I'd suggest is remove the filters and try it. If it lowers then you have your answer. My card hits about 71c after a few hours of gaming but I use a custom fan curve. Set the fan speed up the fans are not loud. Also I found some msi cards back plate screws are loose. Snug them up as well.

My card fans are already @100% once temps hit 70c, but it seems temps still reach 94c.. Regarding the back plate issue, does that affect the temps?

Will try removing filters once I get home.

The four screws around the chip and two towards the back of the card are the only ones that hold the cooler on so its worth a check to see if all are tight.

What if you take the side panel off the case and run it for the same time?

I run crossfire and just using fire fox browser my temp hits 50c on auto. If I disable crossfire then maybe 40c at tops but yes case air flow plays a huge part in temperature.

How are the fans oriented?

I would perhaps also try at least one of the top fans bringing air in, if not both, most of the CPU heat is going to be going out of the back in any case.

Hi, what do you mean by bottom door fan? If you meant the side panel, I already changed the side panel to a clear acrylic panel so it does not have mounting holes.

94*C is as bad as a reference card, and you're saying that your fans are at 100%? That's rough. If you leave the fans on auto, what temp does the card get to?

Hi, Yes is bad for a non-ref card temp. If I leave it at auto, it reaches 95-96c... hmm. what say you? might me my case airflow?

Sorry for my late reply; TPU has been wonky all afternoon.

It sounds like your card has some serious issues. First I'd reseat the card in the slot, do a clean driver sweep and install, and see what happens.

If nothing else works, a return/RMA looks to be in order.

Good idea.. How about if I re.apply a thermal paste? would that void the warranty?

Not sure about MSI and tim changes. @fullinfusion (owns a few msi 290 cards and has changed it) or @neliz (msi rep) should be able to answer that better.

Personally I'd return it or RMA it if nothing helps, unless you hear conclusively that you'll be ok changing the paste. But exhaust all other options before an RMa, unless you bough locally and can return easily.

Changing the thermal paste is not an issue with MSI as long as if the card is sent back for RMA the way it was out of the box, meaning you don't have missing parts on the card. It must be in original factory condition. I also asked about the tiny sticker on the one GPU screw. They said no issues at all and go ahead and change the paste if you like.

I agree with others that if the cards running that hot then RMA it. Something isn't right. Have you ran the card like I asked with the side panel off to see what gaming temps are like after 30 min of game play? If so what's the temp like?

don't waste time with paste if its anything like the other 290 msi's the cooler is probably warped RMA it

you'd better bring it back.
you may try to move fan infront of hdd cage and swap direction of bottom fan but i doubt you will see big improvement from this

If it's a expensive and/or difficult to RMA, definitely try new TIM and re-seating the cooler. Bad factory TIM is not uncommon, even for intel

well i had a R9 270 Gaming from MSI and depending where you live its nothing near difficult or expensive (only the 1st shipping cost was paid by me )

I haven't try that yet.. Will do it after I get back from work. -are there known issues about those screws being loose? Btw, I tried touching the backplate, and is too freakn hot, could fry an egg

if i remembe well @fullinfusion had problem with losen screws of the cooler.
is inst very hard to check if screws are ok bofore you go with rma. but if cards goes that hot more likely problems i more serious then losen screws.

It's summer here in my area so the ambient temp would be around 29-32c. But I guess that's not the only factor why I get super high temps right?
