I think that would be silly. DDR4 is the current technology. Why straddle the ZEN with older technology RAM? I sure would not buy a new motherboard today that supported such legacy RAM.

Which, I don't know why they did that either outside of the obvious to span the generations and make it an easier upgrade path... memory isn't holding much of anything back either so, I can understand it. I don't see a point in it though, just as you don't.

It's just a upgrade path for users to keep their old Ram, save money and buy DDR4 later, using the same MB. I did that too years ago, it was SDR + DDR though, on a Ali Magik chipset, Asus MB, for Socket A (Athlon).

But "crossover" boards are to bridge the gap when new technologies are "brand" new. DDR4 is no longer brand new - in fact, it came out in September 2014 - a full 2 years ago. Plus, the Zen processors will use the new AM4 socket so users will need a new motherboard anyway. So again, I say it makes no sense to bottleneck the Zen with slower, legacy technology RAM.

That is one implementation of it... clearly not all. Old or new, DDR4, its still bridging a gap between Z97/Haswell/DDR3 and Z170/Skylake DDR4. It is new to that platform, regardless if it was on HEDT/X99 already. It's also clear DDR3 nor 4 doesn't seem to be bottlenecking much of anything these days... so said the Skylake testing with DDR3 and DDR4 at Anand and other sites.

Again, I agree, I wouldn't do it either, but, there are clear reasons for the move as I see it.

It works both ways... you can save the consumer money in an upgrade, yet still get profits on the new platform.

Answered your original question, "Why straddle the ZEN with older technology RAM?"...well regardless if we both happen to not agree with doing so.

I would say go for Intel. If AMD brings the performance with Zen then that would be a good option too. If you need an 8 core then you will pay a lot for it from Intel.

I would recommend for Intel as well. The AMD CPU's have many cores that are weaker, but Intel's has fewer cores which are stronger. Consequently, Intel's have better performance per core.

For as vague and directionless this thread started, I'm surprised it is going so well myself. It's too bad because it's so vague that many answers in the thread really won't help out. I still haven't voted because as asked, there isn't an answer. We would need to know how they use the PC, budget, etc...so people can vote all they want, but it's an exercise in pushing the button, that's all.

Did the OP ever post in the thread again or did he light the fire and walk?

The only reason to go AMD is if you have brand loyalty to them... ignoring how stupid it is to be loyal to a brand of course...
