Whole point of "turning off" phones is disabling of all radios so they don't interfere with flight communications. Airplane Mode does just that. Disables all radios but leaving device operational. If airplanes were so sensitive to any electronics, even without active radios, I wouldn't even want to fly with that thing. At all.

PAPER MOVING BUSINESS Royal Mail is reportedly refusing to ship Samsung Galaxy Note 7 handsets after reports that even supposedly safe models have caught fire.

That's according to a report at Android Authority, which claimed that the unashamedly British postal service has refused to ship the explosion-prone smartphone even if it is being returned to Samsung.

Android Authority got confirmation from six post offices that they will not ship the Galaxy Note 7, two of which now refuse to carry any Samsung Galaxy-branded devices.

Its a logical rule thats been around for decades, always wait, then after all the bugs have been sorted then make your purchase. The younger gen doesn't understand this these days sadly.

I'm not younger gen and I'm only speaking about personal experience and smartphones here. Waiting for smartphones to be "old" isn't good, it's just stupid. While waiting other phones evantually are released and are faster and better, then you can wait again for it to be "tested" or buy old stuff. That would be just stupid. Generally hardware / electronics get tested before release, so the risk is pretty slim. The Note 7 is just a exception, not more and not less. No need to be paranoid because of 1 burning phone.

I imagine the batteries would have just been faulty. If the cells ruptured and a chain reaction took place, it makes sense the amount of heat that would be produced given how much electrochemical potential Lithium has. I agree though, It's odd that the batteries, which are supposed to be able to withstand such high forces, would just suddenly combust under such regular conditions.

Also don't forget that batterys of smartphones are still in use after powering it down. The usage is just way less.

People that jump straight onto the newest greatest thing I just laugh at as yes you might be fine but the chances are higher then if you waited if there are any issues, its just stupidity.

they catch fire for very simple reasons.. a fault develops that causes a short circuit.. when the battery short circuits there is enough stored energy to cause the device that contains the battery to burst into flames.. there is no rocket science involved..

what causes the "fault" .. it can be as simple as dropping the device that contains the battery.. damage can happen which could cause an eventual short circuit.. any time.. any where.. he he

the snag with phones is they try and make them as thin as possible.. the thinner they are the better they sell.. sadly the thinner they are the more likely they are to catch fire..

big money and the desire for tiny things has resulted in a battery technology that aint exactly safe.. not a lot else to say except none of us are gonna stop using such things..

Three new reports of swap Note 7 phones that explode - update

"In the past week there have been three reports of new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices which exploded. Two of these were in the United States and one in Taiwan. Owner suffered smoke inhalation by acute bronchitis.

These three reports are in addition to the news last Wednesday that a specimen caught fire in an aircraft.That brings the total reports of replacement Note 7 handsets this week still explode on four. On Tuesday there would be a device in Kentucky have exploded and on Friday in Minnesota and Taiwan .

In cases in Minnesota and Taiwan is no one was hurt, but the man in Kentucky was not so lucky. Note 7 are caught fire at his bedside while he was sleeping with his wife. By the time the two were awake and had what was going on, the whole bedroom was hanging all full of smoke. The house did not burn down, but later that day the man was or nauseated and began to vomit. His vomit would have been black. In the hospital, it was determined that he had suffered acute bronchitis.

What is also striking about this case is that Samsung accidentally sent a single text message to the man.The company was in contact with him because they wanted to have the device for an investigation. The American refused. In response, Samsung have paid him to have an X-ray of the Note 7. He also received an SMS which was: "I have received this network. I can try to slow him down if you think it matters, or we can let him go ahead and see if he actually does. " Where exactly refers to with "really do" is not clear, but the man says in any case want to take legal action.

In the Benelux the Galaxy Note 7 is not available when the first reports of exploding batteries were surfaced.Therefore, the release in this area postponed until October 10, which is next Monday, then the first Note 7's are being delivered . Tweakers asked Samsung Netherlands if deliveries still continue after these messages.Should Samsung on this Sunday give an answer, then this message will be modified. The US telecom AT&T Said to Consider Stopping All Samsung Note 7 Sales.

Update, 13:09: Samsung Netherlands says to be aware of the situation and says to investigate the incidents yet to determine the exact causes. To date, the company would still have found no association between the explosions and the batteries. For now, the delivery schedule in the UK are not changed. As of Monday, October 10th Samsung will fulfill the orders for the Galaxy Note 7."

It's stupid from my standpoint, too bad you don't understand it. I don't buy old hardware - mobiles that are months old are considered old already, because the successor reaches market after 1 year and next iPhone is 6 months away, not even speaking of Sony, HTC etc. I understand your opinion, but it's not really reasonable on mobiles, just because 1 mobile, the Note 7, fucked up. I'm btw. not speaking about 1st day buying, I bought my S7 as well as all other phones I had after it was a few weeks old - enough time for batteries to explode (or not) I guess.

"Samsung Electronics Co. has temporarily halted production of its troubled Galaxy Note 7, according to a person familiar with the matter, the latest setback for the South Korean technology giant as it struggles to manage a recall of 2.5 million smartphones.

The move comes after a spate of fresh reports of overheating and fires with phones that have been distributed to replace the original devices, which also had a risk of catching fire.

In a statement Monday in Seoul, Samsung said that it was “temporarily adjusting the Galaxy Note 7 production schedule in order to take further steps to ensure quality and safety matters,” without elaborating.

The production halt underscores the growing seriousness with which Samsung is dealing with its largest product recall to date. Last month, Samsung officials shrugged off reports of overheated batteries, calling the incidents “isolated cases” related to issues of mass production.

In a separate statement a few days later, the company said in response to reports about abnormal battery charging levels in its replacement phones that “the issue does not pose a safety concern.”

While Samsung hasn’t confirmed the latest reports of problems with its replacement phones, it said in a statement Sunday that it was working with authorities including the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to investigate the new incidents."

lipo batteries are so safe that most shipping companies dont like handling them.. they have silly rules like a battery in a device is okay but a spare battery for the same device is not okay..

in truth airlines would like to ban the things entirely but cant because they are so much a part of modern life..

boeing with their dream liner airplane fiasco learned about lipo fire hazards the hard way.. their answer was to build a metal walled fire proof battery compartment into the airplane..

i think when any company gets hammered for their devices catching fire (samsung being the latest example) with great publicity and expense they say bad batch and do a recall..

in reality nothing much has changed.. lipo powered devices remain the fire hazard they always have been..

the other con (misconception) is people think the hazard is only there during charging.. it isnt.. it can occur even when the device is switched off..

i do think super thin high energy density smart phones increase the fire hazard..

i aint knocking lipo batteries.. i love the things.. but knowing something about them including the downsides may help.. he he

Easy way to get around this. Double or triple wrap it and tell the assistant that its a tablet your sending back. They wont be able to do a thing about it. The only thing they can do is xray it then return it to you if tey think its a note 7. They ain't allowed to take the packaging/wrapping off unless its already damaged to buggery in transit. And if they are kicking it or throwing it around to damage double or triple wrapping then maybe that idiot deserves having the phone blow up in his face

there is one other problem here.. folks will not be able to "post" them back.. no carrier will touch them.. this potential fire hazard problem has been under the surface for a long time.. the Samsung issue will cause major problems as regards shipping this stuff..

This is not true. Its only Royal Mail that has refused to take them. Bunch of idiots if you ask me as every day they probably process hundreds if not thousands of potentially flammable or potentially explosive parcels through their network every day. Remember when people were sending Ricin & parcel/letter bombs through royal mail to bankers back in the late 90s to early 00's?? Royal Mail didnt come out and say "We wont ship ricin or parcel bombs" They said absolutely nothing. The only thing they can really do is refuse to deliver ANYTHING to Samsung service centers here inside or outside the UK. which is stupid because people need to send laptops, tablets & probably other mobile phones that arent note 7's back to samsung for repair and thats the only way they can do it, because it would take too much time to scan/xray everything heading to Samsung service centers to make sure its not a note 7 so just have a nation wide ban in place -- saves much time and effort.

All of the major courier companies like DHL, FedEx, DPD, TNT havent said a word about shipping yet. so they are still open for business. Not too sure about Parcel Force as they are Royal Mail's courier arm of the business but Im guess they will have the same restrictions.

i am involved with the e cig industry and have been for the last eight years.. so i know about this stuff.. firstly company xx does a recall.. in truth they are saying send us back your "fire hazards" think about it.. he he

i am not talking just about single shipments here.. its all made on the far side of the world and has to be shipped.. all the mayor carriers dont like shipping lipo batteries.. some are more keen not to than others..

my drone on ts way from china will come by Fedex.. they are currently considered (by the chinese) the most lipo friendly.. one thing is for sure.. all the publicity concerning the samsung smartphones catching fire aint gonna make an already dodgy situation better..

the carriers have said many words you are just not aware of them.. i am..

What puzzles me about the whole situation, is that they couldn't just use the same battery and charging circuit implementation as one of their other phones. This would have eliminated the problem and sales could have continued.
