TPU Site issues 2016/17

Not open for further replies.
W1zzard is "out of the office" right now. Did attempt to notify him through the mod lounge though.

Seems to be fixed now.

Wassup with the website? Front page only partially loading and the forums running a bit slow. Tried different browsers, but still the same. Other websites load ok. Seems ok on the smartphone however.
It happens when I access TPU from mobile, webpage loads real slow and often goes to the page unavailable screen. However, on laptop and PC it works just fine without nay site loading issues.

Lately, I find that if the app is running in the background, leave it for a few minutes and I come back to it and tap a link, the link responds with a highlight, but the page won't open for 20-30 seconds. I can tap one link after another and they all briefly highlight, but nothing happens for that 20-30 seconds.

Once that initial link has opened, tapping subsequent links works ok.

This fault is of course intermittent.

@W1zzard you'll want to know about this one.

Ok so the frontpage is designed to pull only posts from the last x days. In this case there were no posts to pull in that timeframe because bta had been evacuated and I'm on vacation. This fixed itself after bta made a post earlier today. Will come up with a better solution for the frontpage when i'm back.

What about the app?!

W1zzard did say in another thread he was going on 2 weeks vacation

Some one else is going to have to step up to the mark or we have to (wait and panic :))

Edit Oh wait W1zz posted in reply

So what you are saying if I open a single tab at once and not all simultaneously, it will solve the issue of website loading pretty slowly?

No, it's much simpler than that. Explaining it in steps should be clearer:

1 Tap the TPU app icon on the home screen
2 Select Forums - the forums home page appears
3 Tap any link - it opens just fine
4 Press the centre Home button. The TPU App is now running in the background
5 Do other stuff with your smartphone or tablet (they're the same thing, really)
6 Open the thumbnails of running programs and select the TPU app
7 This is where it goes wrong (intermittently): Tap any link. The link briefly highlights and does nothing. After 20-30 seconds it will open. While it's unresponsive, you can tap any other links and they don't do anything either other than briefly highlight. This inclides the big link that's the TPU logo
8 After a link has eventually opened, other links now open immediately until the app is put into background mode again where the problem comes back and the cycle repeats
9 Closing the TPU app and tapping the icon on the home screen again sometimes fixes it

Note that while the TPU app is unresponsive, I can view TPU in Chrome where it works just fine with none of this lag.

Thanks for the help. Right now I am browsing from laptop but next time I'll log in from TPU app will follow the steps mentioned.

TPU getting slower the past hour...

Seems ok to me, 3 hours later. How is it running for you now?

Yeah it's fine now, but it was slow for about an hour when I posted it.
Most of the time when it's slowing down lately whole TPU went down for a while, just not this time..

Forum running intermittently slightly slow for me tonight. Anyone else seeing this?

I was moving about 100 GB of logs to another drive, should be all fine now

Ah, that explains it. :)

Oh and that's an awful lot of logs... Puts on tinfoil hat. :p

Just the normal single line http server logs, but they do add up over time

Something weird at this thread happened to me:
https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/hello-can-gtx-1060-handle-star-citizen.226685/

I only saw Tatty's post as last post, then I replied to it and about 30-45 minutes later I saw this post from the OP plopping in right after Tatty's post!!

I think that has to do with a delay for new members trying to immediately post. I thought I'd seen that before, and there was a manual approval process meant to filter out spambots and bogus accounts.

@W1zzard

Been getting quite a lot of random '502 - bad server gateway' since last night

I did some server work back then, this should be fixed now. Maybe you had some a minute ago or so, which was me changing one more instance around

Any chance we could get a warning when you are about to work on things? One post like that saves the trouble of users to come here and post they are having a problem and you having to respond. Same LOE for you (a post), but saves your readers some hassle. :)

Where could he put that "one post" warning so every poster will see it BEFORE they enquire about those problems?

That's the problem. Most people don't read announcements any more than they read the Rules when they join. And of course, proper forum etiquette say to come back and close the thread when resolved. So now one post becomes two - but again, not likely everyone will even see it so posters reporting problems connecting are still likely.

Admin could put up a banner, but then it would have to come back down when the work was done. And I'm not sure a banner would make it past everyone's ad blockers.

If these little outages resulted in losing a big long post we were still creating, then I might have a different viewpoint. But every time I got a 502 warning, all my text was still there.

Scheduled outages with expected extended downtime makes sense to announce beforehand. Not sure it does for these little ones. As long as our unfinished posts don't end up in the bit bucket, I'm okay without any pre-announcement.

This thread seems as good as any.

Or maybe xenforo has an 'announcement' ability where shows a message at the top of the forums. Everyone won't see it no matter where it is... like that needed to be said..

it's just a nice thing to do to inform your user base when maintenance is being performed for an extended period of time (say 5+ mins). It gets frustrating from a user standpoint to see these unplanned outages not knowing if it's me or the duration of the outage.

The only thing is some maintenance is not scheduled. So quick and dirty is the rule of the day.

It's my data center mentality shining through.. lol.

I know it's a forum and not a production data center, but still. a quick post here or something that says hey, working behind the scenes for the next xx... you may see some xxxxx errors. please ignore until xxx.

Clearly not a huge deal.. but more of a courtesy. :)
