OFFICIAL Star Citizen

I am just baffled that people would spend so much money on jpegs

...people aren't spending that money on jpegs. People are giving the developers more money to develop the game, in exchange for getting a head-start in game by having a different ship. Unless you mean the gift card images on the side? I guess they're digital and not physical but those are buying store credit people can use to buy the game.

edit

Silly me I missed the images of t-shirts in the middle - those are actually buying t-shirts - man I can understand why you'd be angry if you thought it was $24 for a photo of a guy in a t-shirt - have no fear though! You do actually get the t-shirt :)

It's not even a headstart for a lot of players. If you don't have one of the big ships, and you plan on doing the S42 campaign before you enter the open world then having a basic ship isn't needed. You will exit S42 having been payed to do the campaign. It is after all a military campaign, and you will be an enlisted marine.

The advantage of having a ship and backer status is you already have your citizenship, So you can skip the campaign and go straight into the universe. Great for those who want to avoid scripted missions. Most people will actually want to do S42 just because it promises to be a good campaign. You can still go directly to the universe without citizenship but you will be restricted and possibly need to grind rep or similar to open up decent missions.

Backing has to be taken with a pinch of salt. By all means have a ship or 2, Buy the early alpha access. Just remember that you are not buying a free ticket to gain an advantage. Even having a capital ship doesn't grant you that. You still have to convince people to fly with you, You still need the credit flow. And things will change, even promises may change if they feel they have to. Just look at the Cutlass. It's having a redesign atm, and chances are the new ship will not be following the same design ethos as the original.

I definitely plan on using a starter ship when the game is released. Cheapest to operate (all ships have operational costs just like in life with cars, boats, etc.), with smaller ships you have access to more jump/warp holes (there's small, medium, large holes), less of a target, etc. It will be a nice lower risk way to become familiar with everything in the game.

The Christmas livestream is tonight at 19:00GMT for anyone interested. This is the last livestream event of the year, and I suspect there may be a surprise or two in store as they've held the monthly progress report back as it would be talking about stuff they want to show off tonight which we may not be expecting.

So there wasn't a whole lot of new stuff in the livestream - they announced another racing ship, and showed off a lot of fun stuff coming in 2.6.

Then they closed the stream with this beauty:

That's a Vanduul driller - half the size of their largest ship (the kingship).

2.6 has hit public PTU today for some additional testers. Thought I'd upload a video of the new pirate swarm mode - same as Vanduul swarm but against human ships and pilots. The new flight balance feels pretty good with the new lower speeds, and the visuals/sound have been improved over 2.5:

The FPS mode Star Marine was fun as well - felt very similar to most the other AAA shooters I've played this year, which isn't a bad thing considering this is an alpha.

2.6 will be released to Live tonight. Testing a release candidate build now.

2.6 is now released to Live. The patcher stll sucks and the netcode isn't really much fixed yet in the PU but Arena Commander and Star Marine work well enough that it's pretty fun. It's still all a vast improvement over 2.5. Many new features with the UI, menu organization, music, and lots of little stuff.

Downloading the update now. We'll see when I can actually get in.

Good luck doing anything else on the internet with the launcher running!

I've limited it to 1.6MB/s lol

No kidding I have a 150MBit connection and I couldn't even get to google....

I have 30mbit and I'm still downloading.

I do wish CIG would give more options in the launcher. I could survive with the game downloading 3MB/s and just use the ~0.7MB/s I have left, but their only options are 1.6 and 4.0 so I have to either go slow or use all my bandwidth. :shadedshu:

You can fix this! Make sure the launcher isn't running then go to where you installed the star citizen patcher - in there go to the Patcher folder, then the ui folder and open index.html (may only be called index depending on windows settings) in a text editor (wordpad or notepad++ are fine - do not use notepad though!). Go down to line 220 (or search for "settings-download-limit" without quotes). There is the list of download limits.

For a 3MB limit add the following line:
Code:
                      <option value="3000">3 MB/s</option>

In the list of different download limits, and that will add the option to limit to 3MB/sec. You can create a limit for any speed though - the option value is the limit in KB/s and the part between the chevrons is what it's called.

I've attached a copy of the file with the modification in here too - you need to download and rename it to index.html from index.txt and replace the existing index.html to use my fix.

uk... 3hrs dl :D oh well i will put it in DL when i will not need my computer

Yeah I was really wondering looking at the loading screen.

Still runs like crap thou :D

Runs like absolute turd for me. I think I'm near 60fps on low, but the frame timings are so inconsistent and the animations never quite match the input. It doesn't ever feel quite right, and I've had that problem with the game since I backed.

Maybe I need better than a 280x though.

If you accept 30FPS as fine.
not all the time but a dips under is not a big annoyance at this stage ...

i did a small Crusader tour ... took out my MPUV for a ride, landed back

i use "very high" settings and on 3D OSD i got more like 68-80fps than 30fps (ofc i got some dips, and indeed optimization is not complete ... thought it's still CryEngine or StarEngine ... Lumberyard is a fork, yet the same build as the previous StarEngine which was also a fork of CryEngine )
ScreenShot0122.jpg

nonetheless that was fun ... oh ... a Vanguard ...
ScreenShot0119.jpg ScreenShot0120.jpg ScreenShot0121.jpg

too bad 3D OSD does not show up :D

since i only initially backed the game for a decent (decent for me ... :p ) ammount i am used to melt and fetch deal that pick up my interest, thus i managed to melt some "subscriber extra" and upgrade my F7C-S Hornet Ghost to a F7C Hornet Wildfire (i still kept my flashfire mount for my Revenant gatling )
funny enough most of my ships are LTI except the Drake Dragonfly, the Origin Jumpworks 300i (which is a upgraded Mustang Alpha game package combo with SC and SQ42) and the Consolidated Outland Mustang Delta (still the 2016 anniversary and 48month inssurance )
which still left me with LTI: Origin Jumpwork 85X, Drake Herald, Drake Buccaneer, F7C Hornet Wildfire and MPUV Cargo (thanks to a bunch or Archimedes LTI pack i bought that served as foundation for upgraded LTI on ships that didn't offered LTI  )

so far ... i'm still liking what i get for my initial investment

drat ... i almost want a MISC Razor ... space Formula 1 ... bwahaha
