I am just baffled that people would spend so much money on jpegs
...people aren't spending that money on jpegs. People are giving the developers more money to develop the game, in exchange for getting a head-start in game by having a different ship. Unless you mean the gift card images on the side? I guess they're digital and not physical but those are buying store credit people can use to buy the game.

Silly me I missed the images of t-shirts in the middle - those are actually buying t-shirts - man I can understand why you'd be angry if you thought it was $24 for a photo of a guy in a t-shirt - have no fear though! You do actually get the t-shirt
