Okay first off, I'm very proud of this heated debate you have produced, and there's some real useful advice in here which will come in handy very soon.

Anticlutch, I am intruiged as to what you mean by "lossless codecs". Explain?

2nd, Thanks for the battery advice and the firmware tip, I'll keep that in mind.

3rd, Dippy, am I right in thinking your link is telling people no matter how you treat/charge your battery, the life will always be the same? Please explain.

4th, DOOM on my iPod?? I must know how to do this!!

5th, I have experienced lag using a friend's iPod Video, but I think that can be classed as "loading times" more than lag itself.

6th, I have used numerous iPods before, from friends etc.. and I've always found the sound quality very much enjoyable, although I think the new earbud headphones are terrible compared to 1st generation ones.

7th. Wile_E, are you saying if I convert my music to AAC it will sound better than mp3?? If so, explain..

8th, Again @ Wile_E, what is this about the iPod's "eq"? I don't understand what you mean here, and the fact you used the word "problem" isn't too comforting. What do you mean by "don't use them" also?

And finally, 9th, what is this rockbox firmware link that you have provided supposed to do?

Thanks for all the replies so far guys, it's been a great help.

iPod also has a lossless codec. It's called Apple Lossless. You can rip your CDs to it if you wish, but it does take up more space. Most of my CDs are in Apple Lossless for mine, my favorites I just rip as AIFF files (basically the same as .wav, zero compression)

If your files are already mp3, leave them as such. Cross encoding to a different format actually hurts the music, as it's being compressed twice. But if you are ripping directly from a CD, use iTunes to make them an AAC file instead of an mp3. They sound much better for the same bitrate. If space isn't a huge concern, Apple Lossless would sound even better.

As far as the EQ, i'm talking about the equalizer. Setting it to a Bass heavy setting like Rock or Bass Boost actually causes distortion, because whoever decided on the settings needs to be slapped.

The Rockbox firmware is basically a new OS for your iPod. Fully customizable, and the EQ settings can be set completely custom, you don't have to use factory presets. You can even change the frequencies the eq alters. IE: instead of the first slider being set to only adjust sound at 50HZ, you can set it to change 40Hz or 100Hz or whatever you want. Full sound control. You'll have to dual boot tho, cause rockbox doesn't play videos, iirc.

TBH Cash, I heard a price cut is underway for the 360 BUT, unsure if its only in the states or not. Like many others stated Wii + Nano or a PSP.

Oh and just to prove a point, the wii is not made to set gamebreaking graphics, it is strictly there for gameplay and games for the whole family.

But as my final opinion/suggestion, it would be a PSP.

I beleive rockbox is firmware to give most mp3 players better sound (drivers?).

and I must/need to know about this doom on my ipod!

what dippy meant by no matter how you treat your batt, you can charge it anytime and it never needs to be fully drained to make it last longer like some batterys.

on another note I got my cam working and I will be adding my fav snack to that snack thread after I have a game or 2 :D.. I just ate one and they pwn.

Lithium ion batterys charge in cycles, as long as you aren't voltage/current abusing the battery, life span should not be greatly hampered by "topping off" relativly often. Nickel batterys are what caused this "belief" to come around, where those WILL lose life span greatly when charged incorrectly without draining, etc.

As for doom on your ipod, google "ipod linux"..

Its terribly easy these days :)

But theres not only doom. Theres a TON of stuff you can do with ipod linux.

Even the Lithium batteries are prone to "memory", so to speak, Dippy. It's just not as bad as the old NiCad batteries.

Topping off does have its drawbacks if you look at cell phones however. People who top off their battery every night tend to kill their battery faster than those who wait until there is very little charge left before charging it up.

and Cash: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossless#Audio_compression

Basically it sounds better than mp3's with the drawback of taking up more space.

And Wile E, I guess it's just me then. I'm very meticulate about everything and I hate how iPods have so many flaws. W/e though. All I tried to do was to point out those flaws, and let Casheti know about other brands.

As far as the EQ, i'm talking about the equalizer. Setting it to a Bass heavy setting like Rock or Bass Boost actually causes distortion, because whoever decided on the settings needs to be slapped.
The Rock setting is the only EQ setting I actually thought was halfway decent

I plug my razr in almost every night.

I've had it for a year and a half.

It still holds a 2week charge when i'm traveling.

(I'm a pro at bringing the wrong usb cable, or just forgetting my charger!)

That's really odd... my sister, who had the same phone as I did, topped hers off every night and had to replace the battery while mine is still going (it's been about 2 years now). W/e... must have been a bad battery I guess :p

Possibly.

I love my phone to death. :)

My mom has one too, and its also perfectly fine battery wise, except it cycles 2-3 times a week because of how much she uses it.

Okay I got a great deal from a mate, iPod Mini all working and everything, £10.

I got it right now, it's just synchronised, how can I optimise this thing for sound etc???
