I got a question for you fine fellows: right now I am near the end of the game (I'm at "Final Preparations") and finishing up points of interests in Skellige (already did so in Velen/Novigrad, and I have completed all other missions). Now, I haven't bought the DLC yet and was wondering how exactly the DLC works with the main game, story-wise. Am I supposed to beat the main game before adding the DLC (that was my intuition, considering the DLC was of course released a while later than the main game), or does the ending make something definitive happen that will screw up the continuity w.r.t the DLC? Anyway, suggestions appreciated on how to best go about this!

Play the game without worry. You can definitely play the first before finishing the game. Either way you want.

Even the last one does not require any particular decision or outcome, though. Really, no worries.

I think you can easily do DLC after the main storyline. I just finished the main storyline and the starting missions for the two DLC stayed open.
This isn't really a spoiler, but just in case you don't want to know anything.

After you finish the main game it will tell you a bit about what happens in the world as a consequence of what choices you made, then it tells you it reset to a point right before all that. you're kinda in a limbo out of the main storyline but the DLC are open

Funnily enough I just finished the game earlier this week and have been waiting to start the DLC so I don't do everything super quick.
88 hours to finish the main storyline, I took my time lol.

Yeah 88h is pretty darn fast haha! I'm at 124h now, but still almost all points of interest left in skellige (still dreading this :

Oh man, I felt like I did a lot of sidequests and everything. Didn't do many witcher contracts though and played on the second easiest difficulty. Also didn't do much with romance. Didn't do much with POI either I guess. Good news though it left me with quite a bit to do!

What witcher gear did you guys like? I choose cat.

I think I used Bear (Ursine) until I got into the DLCs where they can't keep up anymore.

Edit: Yup, more XP gain, adrenaline gain, and critical hit chance/damage:

Adrenaline was important to me because I had the ability that took away adrenaline instead of death. I was playing on the two hardest difficulties so, sense.


I hate how the crossbow was so worthless in Witcher 3. It's only value was really knocking flying stuff out of the sky and interrupting some smaller enemies.


Steam has 321 hours in Witcher 3. That's two play throughs (hard then hardest difficulty, including both DLCs) and getting all of the achievements. Second time, I admit, was rushed (skipped a lot of unimportant side quests).

I'm probably going to build the griffin set once I max the cat set. Looking forward to a second play through so I can specialize somewhat. Right now I just kinda threw points into attacks and signs and never planned how I would use runestones or anything.

Also never used oils or bombs really.

I haven't crafted proper Witchher armor yet, still using a mix of random (though very good) stuff.. I'll have a look at the different sets and craft them before I start the final quests I think.

Also, don't feel bad about not using oils/bombs. I'm also playing on the second easiest difficulty (I thought that would be a good difficulty for a newcomer) and the game really is too easy to bother with that stuff; actually, I don't think I've ever used a potion either

Would you guys reccomend Blood and Wine or Hearts of Stone first?

The game doesn't level enemies to you so just by going by the difficulty of the enemies you'll be facing, you should do Hearts of Stone (~level 30) then Blood & Wine (~level 40). The main campaign should get you over level 20.

Yeah, I think everyone that plays main campaign + Heart of Stone + Blood & Wine will finish the game >50. The way the game is set up, it really punishes you for playing below your level. As you level up, you either stay in the area where you are and get next to no XP or you move on to areas with the same level as you and get a lot of XP. In the end, everyone will end up with more or less the same XP no matter what order they did everything in.

The Geralt's storyline is done with Witcher 3, but they (CDPR) still open to the possibility of continuing the Witcher series outside of Geralt's storyline.

But it will be a long wait to see another Witcher game since they are now committed to their new franchise, Cyberpunk 2077 (rumored to be released mid-2019).

Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the game in development that I'm most excited about. Witcher 3 was huge and Cyberpunk 2077 is bigger. On top of that, I prefer cyberpunk over fantasy so it's all win in my book.
