I'm still confused about this. Wouldn't this eat into AMD's APU segment? I mean, graphics are the major edge with APU's over Intel CPU's with graphics core. I know every sold thing is a sold thing, but why not sell it with your CPU instead and not with competitor's?

AMD graphics division went standalone because of more opportunities that aren't tied to the AMD brand. Saying Intel processor with graphics provided by AMD would kinda look awkward for both. But Intel processor with graphics provided by Radeon Technologies Group kinda doesn't. For those of us who follow this stuff, we know either way. But for noobs, not so much. Intel has outsourced graphics in the past, some of their laptop chipsets were powered by PowerVR GPU's in the past.

This was a rumor many months back. Pretty good for AMD.

This was always on the cards, the rumors weren't half as unbelievable as some were suggesting, the good news is that this will make AMD (RTG) a lot of money. The bad news ~ it depends on the T&C of the cross licensing patent agreement, the one which Intel didn't renew with Nvidia, plus the costs Chipzilla will get each Vega GPU, from AMD.

Probably, I bet AMD is also working on lots of other things. Right now they have a portfolio that is so diverse & have an unmatched quality & quantity of IP at their disposal, CPU & GPU both.

So they're building a CPU with embedded GPU to compete with datacenter GPGPUs ? Isn't that a lost cause considering how huge Volta is ?

This isn't for data center, not yet anyway, this is going into (high end) laptops & NUC with Apple possibly being their biggest customer.

Sharing IP does not suggest all trade secrets will be shared. I am sure it is seen as a Win-Win for those participating.

This type collaboration happens all the time in other industries. Many competing companies will work together to build new aircraft, warships, or spaceships, as examples. One company builds this subsystem while another builds that subsystem while a third makes sure both subsystems work together as one system.

This method shares the responsibility, profits, and risks - all good things.

Tell that to a PM... hahahaahlololol! The level of complexity it brings on integration between multiple companies can be, certainly not always (better get my wording right before you split hairs!!!!), a huge PITA. I've worked on gov't projects before that dealt with Boeing/Lockheed Martin etc... its like dealing with children at times.

But in those cases components are outsourced, like LG/Samsung panels, Samsung/Qualcomm processors, but that generally isn't advertised by name. They don't advertise it as "Apple iPhone powered by Samsung Exynos X. They just say Apple iPhone powered with quad core processor". Geek sites post it, but you won't see it in any official documentation, included documents.

Here, AMD will have to sell IP and Intel will most likely fab it in their own foundries.

I worked at Northrop Grumman for 10 years. I know that too well. The good news, at least for government projects is each participant has a responsibility to taxpayers too - a responsibility that if violated, can result is big legal trouble, not just financial.

I also was in the USAF for 24 years and had to deal with such government funded projects as a representative of "the client" (the USAF, my AF organization, and you and me as individual taxpayers).

You are right, real PITA is for the poor (literally and figuratively) government project manager who has to keep making these contractors cooperate and play well together.
