This looks like a hi end Vega. Ryzen mobile APUs will target a completely different market.
AMD doesn't lose because as we seen just days ago, it does NOT have the support of OEMs. 3 Laptops all and all with the new Ryzen APUs.
GCN everywhere.
FreeSync everywhere.

Both companies might hate each other, but they have a common enemy. Nvidia. Nvidia can take their GPUs in 5 years for example and go away, move everything to the ARM platform and let x86 die if AMD is dead by then.

They can do this without sharing IP. Or at least nothing major.

I think the idea is to share some IP and develop new IP together that will then become a shared secret.

That said, the end results must still be compatible with other industry standards (PCIe protocols, VRAM, OSes, voltages, connectors, etc.) so a lot of sharing is already going on.

But in those cases components are outsourced, like LG/Samsung panels, Samsung/Qualcomm processors, but that generally isn't advertised by name. They don't advertise it as "Apple iPhone powered by Samsung Exynos X. They just say Apple iPhone powered with quad core processor". Geek sites post it, but you won't see it in any official documentation, included documents.

Here, AMD will have to sell IP and Intel will most likely fab it in their own foundries.

Nowhere does it say that AMD will have to sell their IP, they're just selling Vega on a package with Intel. Until further reveal later on, this is where the deal stands right now, besides cross licensing isn't exactly selling (GPU) IP. Guess I was half wrong ~

Intel confirmed to us that its new arrangement doesn't include licensing of AMD's GPU technology, instead Intel is merely purchasing finished semi-custom products from AMD. That means Intel likely isn't abandoning its own internal GPU development programs.

AMD went asset-light and became an IP company long ago (as I have been reiterating for many years now), so none of this should be any surprise to anyone. It sure has taken them long enough to capitalize on that positioning, but I guess they needed to develop the products to do so first, and now they are ready, so deals are made. This won't impact the market at all, IMHO. You just need to read up on what they are actually doing here, and you just might roll your eyes because it's not what it appears that most think it is.

I agree. Raja has probably been collaborating with Intel after the spun off of RTG from AMD. It would not surprise me that Raja wanted to bring RTG into Intel's fold. After the failure of Vega Raja definitely got sidelined.

Interestingly, back in the day, the pairing was ATI Radeon with Intel CPU and Nvidia Geforce with AMD CPU.

AMD thought so 30 ish years ago too.

Sharing IP does not suggest all trade secrets will be shared. I am sure it is seen as a Win-Win for those participating.

This type collaboration happens all the time in other industries. Many competing companies will work together to build new aircraft, warships, or spaceships, as examples. One company builds this subsystem while another builds that subsystem while a third makes sure both subsystems work together as one system.

This method shares the responsibility, profits, and risks - all good things.

As many times as Intel was shafted by AMD! Do not forget how AMD became a major player in the global processor market. IBM (remember them?) insisted there be a second source for Intel processors in the original IBM PC. So Intel licensed AMD to make Intel processors for IBM. But what did AMD do? They reverse engineered the Intel processors and started making their own x86 based processors that in many areas, were better (not to mention, less expensive) than the Intels.

It took many years for Intel to catch up and finally leapfrog past AMD again. Intel will not let that happen again.

So no doubt, secrets will be shared on both sides, but much will be held back too.

Why are you omitting the events prior to that ? Intel broke the cross licensing deal they had and denied AMD access to their IP. It was long ago settled that AMD was in fact 100% within legal ground.

Intel shafted by AMD ? I don't think so , Intel pulled every trick they had to deny AMD a fair market place. And it's not me who said it , the court did.

Does it really matter? Is it that important to place blame and point fingers? This is business. Both parties have done their share of dirty tricks in the past and both parties are stepping into this new deal with eyes wide open. Ultimately [hopefully] it will result in more and/or better options for us consumers. And for that, I am grateful.

If you don't think that's a problem because that's how business works and it's totally fine to commit illegal acts in order to gain a monopoly over an industry , then OK I guess. There is no changing that sort of mentality.

Just be aware you can only lose as a consumer.

I totally disagree. Companies forming partnerships on specific projects have historically resulted in better and more affordable products for consumers because there are more resources available for R&D, and manufacturing. There have been exceptions, of course. But in those cases, one or more of the partners typically folds, which was never an objective and is not good for anyone.

And in this case, this is not a merger. If Intel, AMD and NVIDIA were joining forces, then I agree there might be a risk of a monopoly. But in that case, no doubt the independent consumer rights organizations would raise the red flags and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) would step in and stop it.
