seen this today, why is no one talking about it ? this cpu was so hyped....

anyway, it seems to be underperforming by a HUGE margin, not only in games but in general. BTW this is advertised for enthusiasts and gamers and will struggle even with driving a mid-range GPU.

wth went wrong ? it seems like a total calamity.2950x looks great though.

On mobile data, is there a written version? In the tests I've seen it performs as expected: insane in apps that can make use of the threads, "slow" elsewhere. Linux generally does better.

But it's been out for weeks. What AMD said before release is not very relevant at this point. We know its performance.

It's quite stunning how it does in rendering, but just as stunning to see it run slower than 2950x,which is half the price, in compression, encrytption, decryption, video conversion, video exporting, multitasking, office programs and just get wrecked in gaming.

it really has been out of quite some time, I must've been living under a rock.

From the reviews i've read, that's not entirely true (that it only does well in rendering specifically). Game mode seems to help in games.

It is very application specific though, so your choice of benchmarks will definitely affect the numbers.

That's why I mentioned compression, encrytption, decryption, video conversion, video exporting, multitasking, office programs in the first place. Plus if it's not gaming, don't advertise it for "enthusiasts and gamers".

Oh look huge CPU lots of cores and threads and that didn't translate to amazing performance when using software thats been around for years and doesn't typical scale beyond 4 cores.

This a multi threading CPU, If you wanted to play a game while running a render task in the background while watching 4k video, while compiling some software this is probably up your alley. Otherwise not a shocker that its not some amazing end all be all processor. The design is scaled to the maximum here and without an active interposer working with the various dies the latency and other issues will always make it a lower performing part compared to the lesser chips.

The 2990WX is a server CPU. How many times have we seen people have problems using a server as a desktop?

I only scanned that video, but I didn't see anything about Linux, so I'm assuming that they only tested under W10. Maybe you should check out how it does with Linux. W10 has a problem with it. A Look At The Windows 10 vs. Linux Performance On AMD Threadripper 2990WX

well that does explain seeing the back of 2950x and 7980/7960 quite well

It was adverstised as a lot faster than 7980xe at lower price, AMD chose it as point of reference, not me.

Sure it does watch the video,

Memory Bandwidth Sustained:
2990WX 1.9 GB/s All Threads 19.7 GB/s single thread
2950X 4.4 GB/s All Threads 28.7 GB/s single thread

2990WX when all cores are in use has half the bandwidth available per core as the 2950x as such in memory sensitive applications guess what? It tanks.

Ryzen and the Infinity Fabric as is scales quite well up to around 24 cores beyond that the design breaks down. AMD likely needs an active interposer or semi active interposer for future designs to scale well. As the active interposer would cut down on latency and improve throughput between the multiple dies. As it stands 32 Cores and 64 threads is pretty much the upper limit for AMDs design and its falling apart except in specific situations.

As for AMD's marketing choices i don't give a shit what they say. They shovel so much BS and make so many boneheaded decisions its not even funny anymore.

It's a HEDT CPU. I.e. High End DeskTop.
But the only shocking thing at this point is people still haven't figured out we're not yet at the point where we can both squeeze a ton of cores onto a CPU and have each core perform at its best. Thermals won't let us do that. And in Threadripper's case, IF is working against it, too.

Seems a waste to go with 32 cores if so, should've gone with 24 and maximize performance where 2990wx is lacking.

As with any hardware there is a sweet spot.

16 core to 24 core on Ryzen HEDT setups is the sweet spot. Unless your a real prosumer or doing hardcore rendering going beyond that isn't ever going to pay dividends.

While the 32 Core 2990WX does do well in Linux the fact remains most of the world in terms of consumers runs on Windows and Windows + 2990WX and its latency / lower per thread bandwidth = less than stellar performance.

Two of the four zeppelin dies don't have a direct connection to memory, ala EPYC. They can't, the socket won't support it.

There be your latency. This has been known for a bit now.

Running out of (direct) memory access, surprisingly the 2970x does much better. Check that one out, alternatively get the quad channel memory running at 4000MHz or higher.

BTW this is advertised for enthusiasts and gamers

Except it wasn't at all. AMD intentionally segmented it into its own product niche with the WX branding (not unlike the kind of branding you see on Radeon Pro WX cards) because it's marketed more towards content creation and mixed-compute workloads where you might be running VMs, scrubbing content in real time, mixing and recording audio, or running renders all day. Then you may want the same system to play some games on in the off-hours.

It's right there on the press slide. "For creators & Innovators"

Now I'm not going to attempt to argue for it's performance numbers, because frankly it's been all over the place. Some people are extremely happy with the 2990WX and have not seen any serious performance issues, while others are legitimately upset that it suffers dramatic performance hits in their workloads. Like pretty much all modern technology the phrase, "Your mileage may vary," applies with emphasis on vary.

Funny enough it does much better on Linux than Windows 10 go figure, WHich lets face it Linux is not for gamers so thats a further nail in the 2990WX coffin since anyone dumb enough to buy the chip for gaming better be running Linux to get the most out of it lol

cant believe people cant tell the difference between "X" and "WX". Its been discussed that Win10 may not be optimized using such high core counts.

Like pretty much all modern technology the phrase, "Your mileage may vary," applies with emphasis on vary.
correct, I saw someone talk about TR being for creators, enthusiasts and gamers,i guess the information got twisted passing form original source through other channels.

When 1950 and 1900 first came out, yea it was taunted as that. Things change.
