Would anyone be tempted by a Ryzen 1700X for £150???

At that price, why not 3?

No joke, the 2700x is £300 and is probably 10-15% better, even the 1700 non x is still retailing for £200 making the 1700x £50 cheaper, surplus stock of the 1700x? maybe people preferred the 1700/1800x over the 1700x, regardless it's a whole lotta CPU for £150! :rockout:

I shouldn't have bought 2 or 1 @thebluebumblebee !! But since I will be crunching with them both, hopefully 24/7 as well, I will certainly be making the most of them :D The only problem I'm going to have is what OS to put on them since they are for my girl friend and daughter...?? I was thinking Windows 10 rather than Linux, but I thought I could always put both OS on the drive and have it crunching in Linux and then Windows would be left alone... But then I thought that seemed like a load of hassle... What are your thoughts?? :)

:rockout:

I couldn't understand it either @NdMk2o1o, the 1700X was £150, the 1700 was £195 and the 1800X was £200... Same as Scan really.. I mean I would have loved to have got the 1700 since it included a cooler and it was a 65w CPU over the 95w CPU, but at the end of the day, I'm an overclocker and tweaker, I'll make it do what I would like it to do, how I would like it!! :D
I'm just going to have to wait a little bit because I need motherboard and possibly a PSU for these two rigs, I have spare SSDs and GPUs for them and if I would like to, I could always use the 650W PSUs I bought a little while ago for them (I'm sure they'd be ok for two 480's in there :D) if not, I could always buy a pair of 850w PSUs and have done with it :)
I'm very much looking forward to getting these PCs up and running :D I think my daughter (even at 6 years old!!) is going to have a shock since her current PC is a AMD E-350 CPU

Great pick for a secondary system,I'd do the same thing.

I think my problem is I have far to many 'secondary systems' lol but I like your thinking :D
I'm pretty sure that these will probably stay at stock speeds and I'll just tweak the ram and try and lower the vcore down a bit to help with the power consumption if I can get them crunching 24/7... That said, I'd like to make sure that the motherboards I buy are decent enough that I won't ever have to worry about things like that... So I'm not going to worry as such what they cost :) Do it right the first time, saves money in the long term :)

I'd like a secondary system for myself too, I'd go with

Ryzen 1st gen - exceptional value at these prices, 1600 would be my pick
good b350 board, msi pro carbon most likely, never had a msi board, would like to try
16 gigs of fast b-die memory (trident z looks awesome)
rx580 8gb or vega 56 sapphire - great value cards from a superb AIB partner, plenty of vram and good perfromers all round
m.2 ssd - no need for much storage on seconadry rig, go for speed
mx34vq, would be great for racing and sports games, beautiful design and great specs at a very acceptable price
phanteks p400 case - very fond of looks
140mm clc, nzxt x42 preferably - why not, I saved on the cpu, I should spend it somewhere else :p
any super flower psu -this brand name is just too hilarious to even consider any other psu brand, I had mine ordered abroad, paid a premium and waited for two weeks just cause I found the name amusing

sadly, I'm never satisfied with my primary rig, so all the money goes there.

I'm currently looking at these few bits for these 1700X's..

X470 board - Asus Crosshair Hero 7 possibly.. See what else is around...
Possibly an M.2 drive in each, nothing massively fancy, 120Gb maybe 250Gb.. Will see :)
CPU cooler, nothing major as I'd just run at stock, maybe undervolt it a little...
PSU for the two Asus Strix 480's I have laying about - May as well make use of them !! :) - I do have some 650w EVGA G+ PSUs so I could use them if they are sufficient for the two GPUs..

I think that's all I need to get for the two rigs.. So we'll go with that for now :)
I've got the G Skill ram 3466 B die stuff, 16Gb is more than enough for them for what they'll be doing :) I can try and get that clocked.. I know it does 4000 no problems, so tight as possible timings and such, it'll be fine with stock volts :) Just time needed now to get money saved up for it to buy the rest of it :) Oh they'll need a case but they can pick that out themselves :)

I'd get taichi board. if you're going for nvme, get 500gb at least. 120gb/240gb are slower and once you fill them up they get even slower, in real-world (non-synthetic) tasks a 500gb sata ssd at 70-80% full will perform same or bettter as 240gb nvme at 90% full while priced very similarily.SSD performance goes downhill fast once they are almost full.

With both systems being for other people and not me, they'll never worry about the performance of the system like I would be, even more so with my 6 year old daughter and my girl friend, they won't really give a monkey's
I only really use the M.2's for the OS and a few programs, then I can grab a decent 2.5" SSD jobbie and stick some games on that, then have a storage drive for anything they want to keep on the PC.. It'll be mainly for basic usage, I'd just rather spend a little more to get something more than capable than spend on the cheap and frustrate myself not having bought what I wanted in the first place.. We'll see, plenty of time yet :)

The Scythe Fuma worked well on my 1700 and quiet too.
I’ve had bad luck with setting up systems with a small C: drive and a D: drive for someone who’s not real tech savvy. Ended up getting a 2 TB SSHD and calling it a day.
650 Watts should be enough.

Maybe a moderator changed the title? I thought it said something like you want us to put you off buying the CPU, like in your OP. Either a mod has changed it, or I'm going mad, lol. :p

Shame about that customer limit. Perhaps if you try to order another one by phone, or once it's delivered they'll let you? Or more hassly, get a friend to buy one for you and give them the money.

EDIT: It must have gone up, because it's now £196.99 from Scan.
No Moderation actions in this thread, so it's confirmed...…. you're going mad.

That offer had me torn between it and the 2600 (149 vs 145). After some consideration i picked the 2600 since gaming is my main use.

Right as i was about to order, a friend told me he is coming from the US so i got the 2600 from amazon.com for $165 (£128) :D

I'm not in a rush about buying anything yet but after looking at the Taichi and the Hero board, I might save myself some cash and grab the Taichi board.. I think it's probably the better board and for the money being nearly £40 cheaper, it might mean I'd be able to buy a slightly better cooler, which will definitely help :)

Thanks for all the chatter in the thread, it's been a laugh :D And helpful!! :)
