Bethesda Support have released names, addresses, email addresses and credit card information on Fallout 76 customers.

Another in a long line of issues following the turbulent release of Fallout 76 has resulted in them allowing multiple customers full access to the support ticketing system including the ability to open and close tickets along with the ability to view all of the customers information.

With customers being based in the EU, I wonder if this could be one of the first major breaches of GDPR.

I'm surprise kotaku published anything critical of Bethesda. iirc,They've been bashing upset gamers right along with dice & EA , acting like people should just deal with a crappy game & suck it up. Or just pretending the majority population of the gaming community is uneducated, or "deplorable's". If not liking failout76, or bWahMenfailed5 makes me deplorable, then Count me in:)

who knows....maybe bethesda likes the hate :) it doesnt take much from this society to be on the "bad side" of the masses....look at me , simply changing my avatar has decreased the amount of thanks i get by 80% people are funny, especially supposedly "progressive", or "educated" people, who are more prejudiced than any monster could ever hope to be. i can only imagine how bad it would be after actually doing something bad, like leaking customers credit card number, or address would be:fear:

Like I said in another thread, I think the hate has always been a little different for them. People want to like Bethesda (unlike EA), but they let them all down.

Although this is the kind of thing that would engender straight up hate.

It shouldn't be suprising that game publishers would value their own selfish pleasures over creating a worthwhile product and serving the public. It's probably the reason they got into games in the first place.

It's just sad to see so much artistic potential squandered and ironic that they are essentially killing their own brand(s) long-term.

That's hardly a mystery considering how much people like them, which is the real mystery.

Everyone has absolutely adored Bethsoft and have forgiven them for everything, up until this point. I've said "they're not bugs, they're features" when it comes to Bethsoft games in the past, and it's true, because then you get to mod the games, which apparently is what it's really about. Honestly I don't think even this will affect them much in the long run.

Well, I can explain that. Just not Fallout 76 (because it's multiplayer).

Bethesda are one of the originators and masters of emergent gameplay. It's not as simple as making big spaces and open worlds, but a combination of AI/environment/etc changing the conditions of gameplay in realtime.

It's actually more apparent to see it now in their fans. Breath of the Wild outdid Bethesda at their own thing.. but you can tell the devs were fans. It's like they incorporated all of the good mods of Skyrim's community into their default game.

Whats even more hilarious is that prior to this (and the entire support and servers going down briefly), is that the support system was broken in a very specific kind of way. Basically nobody's tickets were getting through for some reason and being deleted almost immediately (at least that's what people thought). What actually happened was one poor dude was getting everybody's tickets stuck onto his account and subsequently dumped into the aether.

Honestly at this point I have to wonder what's going on in terms of staffing at BethSoft. I get the distinct impression that what we knew of BethSoft no longer exists and it's just a bunch of two dozen interns rapidly chucking water out of the sinking boat with nothing but a contact lens cup.

They've never even done a game like this. I don't think it's that they've changed. This is just new territory (one I never wanted them to touch).

Not even TES Online counts. Totally different studio.

I think one of the biggest problems is the game engine, it was never designed for Multiplayer games and whilst being updated, lets not forget it is still heavily based on a 21 year old engine that has been butchered to death.

This is... wow. This is absolutely unforgivable. EU is gonna smack Bethesda down hard for this, maybe hard enough that they will have to cancel some projects. GDPR does not fuck around.

It was a strategic move. those details belong to the haters who were chatting shit about their game :laugh:

You need to put Fallout: NV in that sigpic: "Where's the sonaofabitch who tried to murder me?"

FO76, the gift that keeps on giving

If by "gift" you mean "massive anus" and "giving" you mean "producing a stream of rancid fecal matter".

You'd think that, after the disaster that was the beta, they would've known to hire a bajillion support staff. But nope, instead corporate greed and hubris had its way and they hired a mere handful and like that meme of the dog sitting in a burning room saying "this is fine", the result was exactly as expected.

I have to agree with you that it seems like Bethesda's development arm is circling the drain. Apart from the amount of money they're gonna have to pay out for this breach, they just don't seem capable of making barely functional (never mind good) games anymore. Yeah yeah, "FO76 is an MMO and they've never done an MMO before"... just because it's true, doesn't excuse it in any way shape or form.

FO76 may possibly go down in history as the most rushed, poorest resourced "AAA" game ever. This is what end-stage capitalism looks like, folks. This is what happens when corporate greed takes higher priority than delivering a good product. And who will suffer because of it? Certainly not the Bethesda executives who ordered the game released in this abominable state; they'll still get their bonuses and golden parachutes, while a lot of developers and support staff are going to get pink slips.

I'm lost for words.

But, in a good way. They will think twice about ever repeating this again, both the game and the support of it. Both are costing them money, and that is a problem they cannot deny.

I had to laugh at Bethesda's response to the issue

"Hi guys, we've resolved this issue. "

Well really, What about the thousands of pieces of personal information floating around the internet now. Let me guess....

"We're sorry we released all of your information to the public... but here is 500 atoms and a shitty nylon bag no one wanted"

"What... you wanted canvas? no you get nylon, Materials ain't cheap, you know."

I'm lost for words.

But, in a good way. They will think twice about ever repeating this again, both the game and the support of it. Both are costing them money, and that is a problem they cannot deny.

And it could potentially cost them a lot more. Drawing attention to two lovely pieces of law recently introduced.

General Data Protection Regulations - Article 83 - General conditions for imposing administrative fines -Paragraph 5 said:
Infringements of the following provisions shall, in accordance with paragraph 2, be subject to administrative fines up to 20 000 000 EUR, or in the case of an undertaking, up to 4 % of the total worldwide annual turnover of the preceding financial year, whichever is higher:

Or even if it is classed as a low level breach...

This POS engine clearly wasn't designed for anything considering the first game it was used in was buggy as hell. They should have retired this turd after Oblivion... Yet here we are, 12 years and 5 games later still ridin' the "feature" train.
And two more are in development. Oh joy...

.

Well, I don't want to excuse it. But they pretty much are the hardest type of games to make (as well as support).

They shouldn't have done it though.. the fault is still theirs.

The new TES is not likely using the same engine. Howard hasn't said anything explicit, but a few years back, he said they weren't starting the new TES game until they had the tech ready for what they wanted to do. Which tells me "new engine". Here's hoping.

I instantly lost respect for YongYea. Oblivion was the first TES he played? And he's nostalgic?

Ahem.. wait.. I'll finish the vid.

edit: Howard is right about modders being happy with the system (I'm kind of one of them), but I'd be the first to say I'd want more improvements. The additions they've made over the years have been good as far as environment goes, but not characters/movement/combat. I don't mean just animation (which is trivial, I guess). It's still just oldschool and "floaty" and doesn't physically interact with the world like I'd prefer.

Howard is just preaching to the choir, but he should be the visionary telling the mod community that they are moving forward. The reality is that he is either incapable or not allowed to make the changes required. Incompetence comes to mind, especially given the state of his releases.

You're about all of that, but I'll still love their games... even if they are technically frustrating. No one does what they do. There's a thousand open world games out there, but none are as moddable or openended. I'd just be screwing myself if I stopped playing Bethesda games. Because there anything resembling an alternative. Not even a little. I'm pretty much on board no matter what.

The only reason I stayed from FO76 isn't because of Bethesda. It's because of other people. lol. I'm glad I'm not too close to it, because I probably would begin hating them directly if I was a victim of this breach.
