It's seamless now, once the game recognizes controller input it switches everything to it. That means your button prompts, UI elements, etc get switched to match your controller. Anything that got released as multi platform title definitely supports it.what were those ?
Currently playing AC:Odys and it's even too easy, since barely moving mouse on the desk while using the controller register ingame. It doesn't affect the gameplay at all, you mostly notice it during loading screens.
As for controller choice, grab XO with dongle for PC. Uses 2xAA batteries, I'm running mine on eneloops and they last multiple sessions before recharge even with rumble on. DS4 is fully supported in steam but since it uses built-in battery and battery life is so-so I wouldn't recommend it for PC.
