Threadripper 3970X set up.

Hi everybody.
I'm getting two Threadrippers 3970X and just wanted to ask, what you guys think of the components? Would you have changed something or maybe you have inputs that may be useful for me?

Components.

Noctua U14s TR4 sp3
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3600Mhz 4x16 CL18 XMP
Asus Prime TRX40-PRO
Corsair AX850
Rx 5500XT 4GB
SSD Smasung 970 PRO 1TB
HDD WD GOLD Enterprise 4TB

This is what I got. Any thought?

What about cooling? 3970x does not come with box cooler.
That corsair ram kit might cause some problems.

If you're in the states newegg has the strix $150 off with the purchase of a CPU for the next 70 hours.

Otherwise cooling is very important with open loop cooling probably being ideal.

I'm going with air although I'm considering liquid. Maybe I will try air and see how it goes and if necessary I will slap liquid on these 3970X's

I been thinking and looking over at Guru3D review and I'm concerned about the temps. 3970x with 240mm Enermax LXS showed 85c when stressed with WPrime. Damn, maybe I should go liquid no questions asked. I'm reading articles and searching for strict answer but can't find anything about aircooled 3970X. How will it perform etc.
It will still be locked in a rack in an air-conditioned room so that should keep it cool enough I suppose.

I don't have the exact numbers but search on reddit, people posted their results with noctua. Either way AMD pretty much puts "use premium liquid cooler with 3970x" on their website.

Yeah I've read some comments and the opinions differ. I will have to check this one myself. If anything I will get liquid as of now it will have to stay air.

I really like techspots temperature information because they run a blender load for an hour.

Open loop hit 70c
360 aio hit 74C
84c for the garbage wraith ripper

Given this a high end noctua cooler should only be slightly worse than the 360 aio at most. I would be looking for a dual tower variant if they have one though.

Keep in mind this was likely done on an open test bench. In case temps will likely be 3-7c warmer depending on airflow and ambient.

3970x actually games incredibly well as good as any cpu out there.

That said, I don't quite get the purpose of this build/s. Rack cases... but with cpus that perform best under water. And aircooling inside a rack case is not a good idea especially with no crazy Deltas in sight, oh there is air conditioning. Those Sammy m.2 are only gen3.

I know. I been looking over and it will just clock dwon to maintain the temp. I will have to look at the temp and the performance and see if it is up my alley.
But i will have it in a rack and arcon so i think it will be ok ?

do you ? I know it will clock down (temperature constraints) and I have to make my case with the performance.
I just don't want to damage it and I'm going for two more after this set up pans out.

You can do air but its not recommended. Granted if you do use air the cpu will not perform as its intended, ie. throttled all the time.

Yeah. Well I've ordered already. This is my trial run with the two on air. I can always go liquid. Maybe I should have done that at a start

Cooling is a major factor for all ZEN2 CPU performance. 10C reduction to all core boost could mean 50~100MHz more clock. On a 6 core CPU like mine this is almost insignificant, but on 32 cores is a lot performance gain/loss.
250+Watt is for water really. Air towers must dissipate all that heat in case and then case cooling must throw that out. Can’t be sufficient as a radiator throwing that heat directly out of case. Let alone the cooling capacity of each cooler.

TIM material also play high role to heat transfer and dissipation, because of the density of these chiplets/dies.

To be honest though, I don’t quite see how typical water cooling would be a viable option in the case model chosen. There is no clear path for air flow be the front. A 360mm AIO would be ideal, failing that perhaps a 280mm AIO but that could be difficult in a rack mount.

Therefore air is the easiest option. The typical massive Noctua air coolers likely won’t have the necessary clearance in a 4U Rack mount case.

What air cooler did you opt for?

I gave serious consideration to buying a Threadripper 3960X but I couldn’t justify the cost and it wasn’t the ideal option for the typical workloads I would be dealing with. So I stepped it down to an AMD R9 3950X which was IMO a good compromise. The 3950X is a bit of a beast to cool though. Initially it was spiking To as high as ~80C to ~85C at load. However, with some tweaking I was able to get that down to about ~70C to ~75C under load. That is with a Coolermaster Master Liquid 240mm AIO. I think AMD recommends a 280mm to 360mm.
