I think it’s cool. I don’t hate old hardware like some others do. If it wasn’t for that old hardware we wouldn’t have the stuff we have now. I was looking at my old Rampage Formula x48 ddr2 board. Still a beauty. And my Rampage III Formula..

Call me what you will but I’m still an enthusiast and that’s what this place and others like it are about.

Cool...surely! Nobody is trying to take that from it. Again, I'm sure he'll be fine! The HX series, new, is a quality unit. but wouldn't you be a bit concerned buying a 12 year old power supply for $25? If not, perhaps you should be... :)

I have got used 5820k with sabertooth mobo, used it a bit, umhh maybe i was in need of a better cooling (i had some $35 tower), but i sold it further when i saw it works unstable with proper oc (it was in good condition but i didn’t want to spend a price of this used combo for watercooling lol)
Anyway, don’t take old stuff seriously, unless it is your MAIN rig. ;)

If it was a new psu I would be a little concerned sure. If it was a used one I would have chosen a different path

I will remember my mistake forever: got old gts250 for $25, cleaned it and replaced paste, it was tested ok, but then died next day. I do know how to clean up and all this bling, but the case was the die just was hold by cooler so it dead after disassemble lol

Nothing wrong with using a PSU much larger than you need. May even be more efficient. Only downsize is the cost and they are larger

This is wrong. It will work, but it certainly isn't going to be more efficient. How well they work at low load is very important.

I run a 650 titanium in my htpc exactly because of this. Whenever I'm browsing, or decoding video, it isn't drawing much power, and that's most of the time I spend on it.

johnnyguru does pretty good power supply reviews (haven't read them in a while, but they are where I used to read when I was shopping for them). I myself am currently a Seasonic man.

Sligthly older? It's a 12 year old PSU that we're all assuming is used. Me? I would have paid 3x what he did for a new 650W unit with similar quality. Remember, the dude created a thread showing off his purchase. Should we all have chimied in offering candy and goodies leaving the elephant in the room? Nobody is being toxic here (though I agree with your overall sentiment this place continues to be toxic) just putting some information out there for future use.

Sorry but last time I checked it's a tech forum for all kinds of hardware, new or old and 12 years is not old. Hell I'm running a 30 year old integrated amp with no issues, should I just dump it in the bin because it's used and old?
As far as I can see it he created the thread just for fun, the way this hobby should be. It's not always about buying new, for me it's always more fun t tinker with old hardware, even if something dies it's not a huge loss - just like in this case.

Not sure how I should feel about my rig after all this post about old hardware considering that my system specs (as listed) are in that category except for my SSD & USB peripherals.

Certainly. both my PSU is made pre-2010 but they don't seems to be dying anytime soon. To be fair, the load from my rig is split between both PSU. The SeaSonic powers the GPU + 1 SDD + 1 HDD while the VenomRX powers 1 HDD + CD/DVD combo writer + motherboard with lottsa connected USB devices. Sure, just one of them could power my rig alone but fan noise at high speed is a bit noisy while still giving off heat. With the rig's load split in two, fan speed is low with no noticeable noise while not feeling any heat from both PSU. Plus, this way, both PSU should last longer. After all, I got the SeaSonic for free (albeit used) from a trusted individual, might as well use this method after I also replaced my GPU for a better, beefier one.

I’ve always wanted split-psu system in my dreams, like, seriously :)

You could buy a used PSU & try it. While I would caution buying a used PSU, I also wouldn't be too distrusting of it. The situation with most used PSU is that they are replaced with a better one but doesn't necessarily mean that efficiency has gone bad. Check with the seller to be sure. Also make sure that the better PSU takes the heavier load of your components.

Back in the day I wanted that 5.25" bay power supply to power my gpu, lol. :)

Then, I realized how cool, but silly that was....then....until now when we have 420W single gpu cards. I cant rig my stuff like Rei just for quiet. Id get a properly spec'd single psu. That rig can't pull more than 350W with everything being stress tested... gpus alone can do that today. ;)

I got rid of my Seasonic X series psu that was crica 2010(ish) when I went r295x2 gpu, lol.
