If anyone was looking to buy a new GPU in the past few months, the person is likely familiar with the situation we are in. It is now a fact that the latest generation of GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA are extremely hard to find, and when you come across one it is listed at some mind-blowing price. However, the makers of those GPUs, AMD and NVIDIA, are claiming that we are near the end of this situation and the things are going to be better shortly. And companies such as these two must reach out to consumers and try to satisfy their needs, even in the difficult situation that is going on now with the GPUs.

In the interview with The Verge, AMD has confirmed that it will be selling more Radeon RX 6800, Radeon RX 6800 XT, and Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards using its website, throughout Q1 of this year. The company claims that it will try to supply as many customers as possible, without any exact figures. When it comes to NVIDIA, the company has commented that the situation will likely resolve sometime at the end of Q1, meaning that in March things should return to normal. The company has also added that in the meantime consumers shouldn't expect to buy any of the GeForce RTX 3000 series graphics cards at their original MSRP. NVIDIA also continues emphasizing that the reason for such high prices is the high demand they are seeing, exceeding production capacity by far.

I believe it when I see it. Hopefully, the prices will get back to normal as well but that's a bit of stretch if you ask me.

No, they don’t, because of Trump’s tariffs.. look at new normal prices of some AIBs:

from $440 to $500 and now $530 for an RTX 3060 Ti
from $540 to $600 and now $640 for an RTX 3070
from $750 to $780 and now $840 for an RTX 3080
from $1550 to $1580 and now $1900 for an RTX 3090

These are not normal that is the point. I'm talking MSRP not what the current prices are. It is going to improve in March with availability and hopefully with the prices as well.

If people were not willing to buy it, nobody would've produce it. Demand is high and supply low. If these get balanced, there's a good chance for a price drop.

These are official new prices from vendors, not from some scalper stores... this is new baseline for even higher prices from stores, there will be no MSRP prices like in 2020... thats the point.

Whenever AMD or Nvidia release a new card cryptominning wildly goes high!
When would this mining non-sense stop? How governments allow a so-called currency that only gets value from speculation and consuming huge amount of electricity?

I will only believe it when I see it.
Let's see, will the same happen again on the next generation? Will it again be "we did not expect such big demand"? Oh it likely will be...

In EU midrange GPU's are extinct, some shops have in stock rx580 8gb and gtx 1660 at 400$ and 5700 xt at 650 to 1000$ for Strix type of cards.
Then you can jump to latest generation and in stock you find 6900xt and rtx 3090 for 2500-3000$.
These greedy motherf...... sold to miners as i read in a news, it hurts gamers and game developers.
Game developers got fuc... mostly by Nvidia, they forced them to put reflections on everything and up the graphics quality only to be fuc... because no one has the gpu to experience it.

The gaming divide will soon mirror much of everything else. The 'haves' and the 'have nots'. I swore my 2080ti would be the last 1k GPU I'd buy. When a console costs half as much as that, the justification for spending on a single component becomes difficult, especially when other things in life are more meaningful. This debacle, the hike in costs above a false MSRP have made up my mind. I'll skip this gen. I can afford a 3090 but I won't buy one on principle. It's not going to add value to my gaming enjoyment.

Also, its the most ass-backwards part of a PC. There isn't another component in the system that degrades in 'relative' performance as quickly as a GPU. Frankly, GPU's should be at consumer CPU prices, period. But hey, I'm not a businessman, and if I was, I'd live a modest and life.

That been said, it's pretty clear now that the new gen of video cards, for example the RTX 4080 will be sold at 999$ MSRP.
Because...why not.

I remember, back in Q3 2017 and that's exactly when I purchased my 1060. It was going for €400+ before that and I got it for €299.

When would this mining non-sense stop? How governments allow a so-called currency that only gets value from speculation and consuming huge amount of electricity?
The entire point of cryptocurrency is that governments have no say in the matter and cannot control it. They're decentralized by design. I suppose governments could ban the trade of cryptocurrency in their country's legislature, but how would that ever be enforced without literally monitoring everyone's internet traffic and forcing all traffic to be unencrypted? I'm also not a fan of how it's a massive waste of electricity, but I'm even less of a fan of breaching every citizen's rights to privacy.
These are not normal that is the point. I'm talking MSRP not what the current prices are. It is going to improve in March with availability and hopefully with the prices as well.
Those prices are the new normal. The Trump administration has enforced new tariffs and all GPU manufacturers have to pay those tariffs on chinese imported products now, so GPU manufacturers have to increase prices to consumers to brunt the cost and still profit. The prices @HABO listed are the new normal and will stay that way. The Biden administration has also commented that they're not looking to remove the tariffs any time soon, so get used to it.
AFAIK this only affects the US. I've not seen price hikes (yet) in Europe.

I'm not willing to buy it. Didn't even consider as long as this situation persists. If it gets well into 2021 I may as well skip this generation just like I skipped the previous one (due to combination of not great performance gains and increased prices).

My red line is: Double the raster performance of my 1080Ti (OC vs OC), at the same price point (which neither 3080 nor 6800XT achieve even if prices were normal). I don't care if that's gonna be called 4080 or 5050 or banana and how the product stack will be above and below that, just give me reasonable priced performance.
You can't deliver? No problem at all, I can play at High settings (not ultra) for a couple of years. :)

I really hate that Trump taxes affect EU prices as well. It seems like every item manufactured goes from china to USA and THEN to EU and other regions. What bullcrap is that?

Not to mention they've also become the currencies of choice for the black market and money laundering.

As far as I'm concerned, miners creating the currency are in support of the crimes that they're used for. That's why I've never mined or traded in crypto even once in my life.

this, i can live if i have to whait 6 month to upgrade a cpu, its not a real problem. sure cpu became obsolete too, but when yoj have 15% in raw performances over a year you are shouting to miracle. It will take year to a cpu sistem to became obsolete. Gpu is totally different. every year you have a bumb in performance like 5 years in cpu or even more
I cannot accept to wait 6 month after launch for mining to became jnprofittable again and buy a brand new card with the launch of the new generation 3 months ahead.
Its crazy

We will be hit with those price hikes, definitelly. But now we have 0 stock here in EU , thats the reason there are no price hikes yet, but I saw some in German retailers. I had preordered 3080 for 3 months and then I canceled my order because I was able to grab some 3070 from small shop in Slovakia. I thought about to buy 3080 ti but with those prices it will be like 1400e card in EU. Im not willing to pay this ridiculous price for ti with my 3070 590e card.
