I was already running the fans at 85% to begin with and it was reaching 102c at stock. I noticed it before when checking gpuz and it was thermal throttling even though the core is around 50c. This is a Ventus 3080 meaning its the bottom of the crop for 3080s. Funny enough Gigabyte didnt even put thermal pads on their cards from what I've seen in reddit.

I changed the thermal pads and everything changed. No throttle and I can set the fan to lower fan speeds.

Those copper pads are conductive. A lot of things can go south if someone uses that on their unobtanium cards.

Well you can only place these copper shim in between the memory modules and the backplate and it should work better than any thermal pads, other places on the back side of PCB should only use thermal pads as usual.

My guess it that your 3080 wasn't tighten down enough at the factory or the old pads did not make proper contact.

I don't think you should let the fans go to lower speed though, just keep your card as cold as possible, better be safe than sorry, these are unobtanium after all. Besides the VRAM temperature there are also VRM for the memory, the memory on cheap 3080s only has 3 phases VRM and you are pulling a lot of current through these phases.

Another possible point of failure with mining for fun is that thermal cycling will lead to early death (solder failure), if you let these card mining 24/7 there would be less failure rate.

Old pads were just cheap soft chewing gums.

You might be right as well. As the ventus was known to sag and it might not have proper contact. However, it is mounted vertically with no side panel so that was not the problem.

For the past few days, the rig is mining mostly 24/7. I'm even mining while working from home and can do zoom meetings.

It works but I know it can be better temp wise.

you would still need pads or paste on both sides of those shims, so you're adding more and more layers
we have backplates, we just want to get the heat from the VRAM into the backplate, so we can cool it externally - thats where lumps of copper works instead of flat plain old aluminum

Well I tried out some ETHminer but it doesn't work so I can't test out the Memory junction temp during mining, only gaming.
Playing CP2077 the memory Tjunction on my 3090 get up to 66C, placing a fan on top of the backplate does nothing (here is my backplate)
Reading around the Tjunction is the temp of hottest module, so when you forget to cool the front side modules (lowering the fans), it will negatively affect the memory Tjunction

Dropped a few more of the 30x40x5mm pi4 heatsinks on the back (5 total) and dropped in a ghetto fan for mining funzies.

Max Junction temp mining all yesterday was 96c, core 44c, and the room got to 28c ambient (cheers summer). Seems sustainable for ~90mh/s.

I managed to put a bunch of those heatsinks and I can tell it is working. I managed to shave off 2 degrees. My 3080 is now hashing at 90mhs at 94 degrees.

I've realized the best airflow for my scenarios is top to bottom. Fresh air comes from the top and the 3080 exhausts hot air at the bottom. This flow also help cool the backplate and heat my fingers when the ac is on while working. And the tempered glass helps in directing the flow downwards.

No more 250 watts of heat being dumped inside my nr200 which means no need to worry about beefy cooler for the cpu.

I've thought about doing the inverted mod so the gpu is at the top exhausting heat upwards but its too much work for me.

Interesting, I may well have to experiment with reverse airflow direction. Did your GPU temps drop too?

I ask because my next 3d printed CPU duct was actually going to be a 90-degree elbow to pull fresh air from the back panel, then throw the TG panel on the side, so the 3080's heat would be fairly inconsequential and I can keep the natural hot air rising flow direction going.

They helped a lot. My temps are almost the same ranging from 92-96c but my cpu is now colder. It was idling at 60c+ when mining. Not to mention the overall temps of everything inside the case is a lot hotter.

The normal orientation would have worked if I have a fan for exhaust at the back (which is on the way) but the air just doesnt escape fast enough to make internals cool even if the top fans are at full speed.

No one is to blame but us for mining inside an "SFF" case.

It was a huge adventure buying that card, to buy it from EVGA US site, been in the queue for exactly 127 days, then I had to find a friend in US to ship it for him, buy from a US account, buy from US IP!!! It was a huge adventure for me, applied associate discounts and so, bought it for the good old 799USD MSRP, I hope nV can fix that situation fast. I ordered also a GPU support bracket and moving the whole build to a new case, gonna post photos once done. BTW that's a big freaking card compared to my arm xD

Well, my card uses 1.5mm pads and not 1.0

good news is, 90% of the stock ones survived taking the cooler off, leaving one where i had to double up two 1mm on top of each other short term

200 RPM lower, same GPU and Junction temps - because i basicallyt replaced two pads with doubled up arctics and replaced the TIM and thats all :/

$40 later for 1.5mm shipped, and i might be able to actually improve the pads next week

Very cool dude, I would love a definitive answer on what thickness pads the Asus TUF uses (front and back) so I could replace the lot, perhaps add even more on the rear and do the tim too

Nice! Did you sort out the problems with the screen going pink? Welcome to the club, it was long overdue!
No i didnt, i'm still having issues with video after sleep mode and need to restart. Today i turned on the PC and had little blue squares start appearing. My heart jumped into my throat as i restarted.

Luckily the card worked normally again but these little issues dont half get me worrying.

I'm going to buy a new cable over the next few days. If that helps we might have a solution for anyone else having the issue in the future.

Can you suggest a HDMI2.1 cable brand? :toast:

Looks like I'll go all out on Thermalright Odessey pads, TUF needs 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm to do the lot, plus some thermal grizzly Kryonaut to do the TIM.

No half measures! with the de-shroud in place, temps and acoustics are going to be bloody wild.

@15th Warlock Thanks buddy!!!! Checking them out now. Is there a version with connectors to fit a monitor/tv flush to the wall. The TV is leant on the connector atm and i dont think that will be helping. I'll post what I find searching from your link as the starting point. If there isnt one available yet I'll get the one you suggested. :toast:

I thought I'd update everyone with a few developments :)

The MSI card I have, the temps are fairly steady under mining, about 90 to 98C at most depending on what I'm doing with the card (overclocking etc.) and I've got some more heatsinks coming today and some thin thermal pads so I'm hoping I can put the pads and the heatsinks over where the heatpipes are on the back plate to help with disapating the heat from the RAM. I highly doubt it will do anything much at all but for a few quid of effort and such, it's worth a try :)

And as for my Strix card, that was put under water and the temps, surprise surprise, are no different under mining, even with gaming as well, they are the same as the air cooler... So long and short, probably don't bother with a block...

Did your block have cooling plate at the back? I think the junction sensors checks the hottest chip and throttles it from there. If yours didnt have anything at the back it would still show hot temps.

Strix had a full cover block and a back plate that was another $40 on top of the block lol My mate was gutted as it's not helped a thing and I believe that these heatsinks I've ordered as well won't help much if at all either.... We'll see when I get them through :)
