I also am well aware that nicehash mining has NOTHING to do with these shortages, and that users mining at home has zero effect on stock levels... us gamers already HAVE the cards.

Nothing ? Really ? This has to be some sort of joke, right ? You can go on and look on r/nicehash for example and see for yourself that there are tons of people using 3000 series cards 6000 series from AMD. Some have just 1, some 2, some a entire room.

In fact I dare say nicehash contributed to the death of PC hardware availability to a great extent because it lowered the bar of entry immensely with their one click miner, nicehash is literally made for people mining at home. Gamers can't get the cards that they want because they are either bought directly by miners or sold to miners by scalpers which are really the only ones who can afford paying 3000$ for 3080. Or are you going to tell me that all of these people complaining absolutely everywhere for not being able to buy cards must be delusional or something ?

You like mining, that's fine but what you say is an outright lie and you are being seriously disingenuous. I sincerely hope you're just trolling.

Hi,
I'd likely just question the adds validity
Up to 8.us a day, okay prove it because power is not free and I get sort of sick of seeing this description "Modern" thrown around like it supposed to mean something real because that image of a gpu isn't one I even recognize I've never seen a gpu that has a carry handle on it lol
3080 and 3090 will get even more than 8$ US a day (maybe 3070 too, i dont keep up with all the ROI on GPU's). As for electricity it's all about the cost where you live. Where i live it's ~0.0825 per KW/h and in the winter the computer also heat my home so i dont even care about the electricity cost.

I mine with any GPU that can mine at home in the winter. It's a no brainer, simple as that.

****I dont use Nicehash

One could argue that mining is also morally reprehensible, when you look at the vast amounts of energy wasted in the process and when you consider the origin of said wasted energy.
Hi,
Energy isn't wasted miners make money eventually.
The cost of said energy is the monkey in the room whether money is made or not or at least how much money is made plus wear and tear on hardware operating 24/7-365....

Well since this topic generates a ton of spice I will add my 2 cents. I understand the anger that people who don't have the most modern GPUs feel. I understand that the price being asked for modern cards is absolutely ridiculous. The thing about Crypto mining is if you have a GPU from 5 years ago that has enough VRAM you will make a profit. That is the objective truth.

TPU stands for Tech Power Up. Not Gaming powerup. Indeed as a news organization they should be as objective and transparent as possible in regards to anything to do with technology. If there are tech channels on Youtube dedicated to Crypto why should TPU not allow us to continue our lively and usually informative debates by earning some legitimate money for advertising. As much as I am not a fan of the way Nvidia deals with it's products I don't behoove TPU for having their products advertised on the site. Even Enermax has advertised on the site when they were embroiled in controversy.

If we are worried about power draw there are 3KW windmills you can buy for $1300 (kit) ($800 ea.) add a couple solar panels and that would be a very interesting setup. You would make money from mining and the grid. What we need to focus on is letting the companies know we want to maintain that Golden rule in Enthusiast PC price/performance and demand they create separate lines of product for Mining and Gaming. Of which they could tell us to pound sand because they can't make them fast enough regardless of our lamentations so even though Nvidia will be making mining cards it will do nothing to relieve the supply of "Gaming" GPUs.

I for one am Guilty. I did pay $800 for my first Vega 64 and I bought another one for $500 for 5+ years of some epic crossfire and the joys (and pain) of water cooling a GPU(s). I paid $1300 (CAD) for my 6800XT Gaming X Trio and Nice hash seems like an academic way for me to get my money back (if not at least the premium). I am confident that I am not alone in that sentiment.

Anyone objecting to this add must also object to this forum section too ?
I make about 4 or 5 Euros a day just running it on my Gaming PC while working from home. If I was running 24 hours I would probably be in the range of 8 or so. As much as people don't want to believe it really is that simple. In the part of Canada I live the biggest cost in your electricity bill are admin fees and usage is minimal.

Hello. :)
I am aware most miners make money, that was not my point. What I meant is that crypto mining uses enormous amounts of energy. And when I mean enormous, I mean if crypto mining was a country, it'd be in the top 30 of annual energy consumption. And rising rapidly. Now let that sink in.

TPU has been on my adblock whitelist for a long time, one of only a handful of sites who have earned that privilege. Today, that came to a swift end.

Which Adblock extensions are working for you, because uBlock Origin doesn't seem to be catching this for me.

I've also allowed TPU on my whitelist for some time now, but with contentious ads this glaring and obtrusive, that is ending immediately.

All the hate over something so simple, and the petty attacks on W1zzard as if he isn't human.... Smh

I get that some may be upset, but idle threats and all this madness will pass, and every single one of you complaining will still be at TPU when the ad is gone until the next one that ruffles feathers hits.

Im not saying you cannot have feeling and emotions. Just that W1zzard is not your mother, and should be shown massive amounts of respect for what he does rather than all of this pettiness.

I have no hate for W1zzard. I enjoy the work he does and shares with us. Should he feel that any revenue brought in based on his decisions, then that's on him. Some folks will like them, other's won't and the remainder won't give a rat's ass.

What I dislike is when forums or businesses allow the face of the company (moderators in this case on the forums) to be judgmental and talk down to people that use the forms, it reflects poorly on the business and/or ownership. W1zzard may be the one behind it all, but those that he puts in the front line are a reflection upon what he wants to show the world with his work.

Are moderators humans? Yes.
Do they have feelings? Yes.
Do they have their own opinions? Yes.

However, the moderators need to tread carefully on how they present their selves. When a moderator comes off as cruel (maybe they keep outing just a few people for personal vendetta) or they're condescending (always talking down to members in their posts) or telling people what they can and cannot feel.....I think you see what I'm getting at....their actions are a reflection upon the place they work for or moderate.

I'd hate to see any moderator putting themselves in a position where they are making a blemish on the organization they're working for.

As for the nicehash ad, I find it a bit disgusting. It certainly wouldn't be my first, second....or 100th choice of an acceptable ad to run with the GPU situation, but it's not my site. Clearly it's not my choice, but I would like to let it be known I'm not approving of it. I have turned adblock back on and I am now blocking any ads that come up on this site.

I use Adblock. Running it doesn't block the add, but all I have to do is right click on the ad, choose Adblock in the pop-up menu and then choose the option "Block this ad". I didn't have to adjust the slide bar to block out anything extra, simply "Block this ad" now prevents the nicehash ad from displaying anymore.

One could argue that mining is also morally reprehensible, when you look at the vast amounts of energy wasted in the process and when you consider the origin of said wasted energy.
That's a rather dubious argument. Running intensive benchmarks, or the latest games on powerful, power hungry PCs also consumes lots of energy. Is that morally reprehensible too? Of course not. Neither activity is reprehensible.

Its feedback on how the site is managed. Personal attacks are indeed out of place, but outrage over what is being supported and peddled on the site is very normal and should be welcomed.

You can bet this can cost TPU users, but above all quality. I think the overall state of the forums and general intelligence on display is a good show of that. Its about what folk you want to attract and who will feel comfortable 'among equals'

Ads like these are a major jump in the wrong direction, much like those selling keys however 'not illegal' it says it is.

With stuff like this Im really one foot out the door already and this certainly killed ANY urge to support through Patreon. That bridge is now burnt for good.

Who really benefits here? An interesting question.

Let me flip that script then. If you want to complain about the ads run, have your wallet ready to pay the difference ;)

You cut thousands of dollars worth of checks to W1zzard on a monthly basis?.... Because that is the kind of money we are discussing, not some paltry $5 a month support.

You know as well as I do thats not how it works. The entire user base can chip in and really, who is doing who a favor here? I can go elsewhere and if you want to run on goodwill, you gotta listen to your audience.

One of the reasons Im here is because on the content itself W1zz does offer that. If the path of choice is having both streams of income... we run into a problem, as you can see.

Not a mod, so this does not apply to me.

Wasn't directed at you, just a generalization of how previous comments by a mod were addressed towards people. I was just using your comment to flesh out my reasoning of my post.

Hi,
Well all companies that produce something uses large amounts of energy so let that sink in too
That's not a great argument. Because everything uses power to make it doesn't matter how much of it we use?

That's a rather dubious argument. Running intensive benchmarks, or the latest games on powerful, power hungry PCs also consumes lots of energy. Is that morally reprehensible too? Of course not. Neither activity is reprehensible.
I mean, you could totally view benchmarking and gaming as a waste of energy (or time). But they're on entirely different scales.

Not to mention, as more coins are mined, transactions get more expensive and more power is used.

With all the softwares, BIOS collection and tons of high res PCB images that TPU offers, I feel like TPU deserve some lax with its advertorial. Nicehash doesn't hijack your PC or anything, you use Nicehash to mine money for you, that's all.

I'm not offended by the ad.
It's ugly and orange but it's at least relevant to some of the audience here, I know for a fact that several TPU forum members are miners.

Sure, gamers dislike miners for buying up all the stock and contributing to the issues of high demand and low supply but they're not breaking any laws and there's nothing stopping any of us from doing the same thing, other than perhaps morals/ethics. I'm not going to enforce my morals/ethics on others though - that's neither legal nor respectable.

My only financial support for TPU is the ad revenue so as long as it doesn't obscure any content, I'll just tolerate it no matter how eye-watering the colourscheme may be.
