if they get rid of this that is the day i turn off updates. lol
Way ahead of you! :laugh::toast:

M$ never have earned much from the 'great many people'.
No true at all. When Windows XP was released, retail direct-to-user sales accounted for 42% of revenue for the OS. This trend continued with Windows 7(we won't talk about Vista) with retail sales at 38%. 8/8.1 was pathetic as hardly anyone bought it. I'm not sure what the Windows 10 numbers are as Microsoft has not directly disclosed those numbers to shareholders that I have seen. Might have missed it. Can't imagine it's very high as Windows 10 has been more popular than 8/8.1, but it's still not well loved.

If they get it enough right with Windows 11, they might have another winner like XP & 7. But they're going to have to please the professionals, power-users, enthusists and general public all at once. They should really focus on the first three and the public will follow the leaders, like it should be..

You are able to connect without surrendering personal information on that level. We did it for all of the 90s and well into the turn of the millenia. There was a big ruckus when Intels P3 cpus had a embedded serial number even around that time because people were worried about being fingerprinted by it.

The issue is you no longer have much of a choice if you want to function as a modern digital person. That Pentium 3 issue would be chump change today.
With internet becoming available to more and more people, the "digital labor"(yes, the simple fact of using Facebook, and generating data by doing so is a form of work, and we are technically doing it for free :D ) had to appear to sustain the illusion that using internet services are "free".
There's a lot of nostalgia about the simplicity of the early days, but we are too far gone, capitalism and internet are now inseparable, unless you choose to carefully cure how you live your digital life...which can be hard to do for some profession

I think windows 10.1 is a better naming then windows 11 , Also windows 10 users wont hate the 11 naming because basically they would feel its a 10 with updates.

Turn the telemetry to Basic Mode and you're fine. I have looked at the data that's sent when in Basic Mode with the Diagnostic Data Viewer app and there's absolutely nothing that's anywhere close to person in nature that's sent. All that's sent is just a bunch of numbers; no email addresses, names, passwords, not even URLs of pages you visit. Basic Mode is fine.

I'm not sure what telemetry Microsoft sends in basic mode but I do know that using another app made by Microsoft to try find out if they are sending sensitive data is not a good way to go about things. Whether the app truthfully reports everything or not, there's implicit bias there.

I really like windows 10. It is snappy and reliable. I'm not sure I like the idea of a new "version" of windows.

I guess I don't get out much but I have no problems with Windows 10. Granted the auto updates is frustrating but I can think of other things in life more worthy of my worrying than that..

I could be a Windows hater (which I'm not) and still use Windows. It all depends on what kind of software you're using and if you need it for work.

Sure, you can preach for Linux, Wine, etc., but that's not the same as using Windows, specially when work is involved. Your app doesn't work like it should? Well, fuck you, you're using Linux and Wine, you don't get support for that.

I guess I don't get out much but I have no problems with Windows 10. Granted the auto updates is frustrating but I can think of other things in life more worthy of my worrying than that..
Same. I can understand why it happens (to a point, I think it's MS' fault for getting rid of like half the QA team, for starters), but like so much complaining from a lot of people and I'm just here counting maybe four instances of Windows actually fucking up by itself. And that's without taking into account that I've been using Insider builds since the beginning (which is basically running betas)
I kind of like the idea of the Control Panel going away if Microsoft were to ever get around to implementing everything that the old Control Panel applets do. A lot of companies liked to add shit to the Control Panel for no good reason other than to clutter the damn thing up. (I'm looking at you, Adobe! You're the worst of them all!)
I can get on that train but Settings needs at least the ability to open up multiple instances. One single instance sucks.
I'm genuinely afraid they will pull another EEE on Linux, and that would be the end of it.
Unlikely. Linux is basically unkillable in server space.

Been real happy with fedora linux for the past decade or so. If you need games it's not for you, but can recommend otherwise

Linux still has a few things against it for the typical home windows user.
-games
-other programs like autocad, etc.
-a very similar windows GUI
-being able to just double click everything and work 99% of the time
-too many versions
-not enough focus on a true win home replacement
-drivers
-etc etc.

When win 10 was announced I remember GabeN saying valve would make a linux based OS, well I thought that would end up being a windows replacement or at least a true competitor, not half baked steam OS. I have tried Ubuntu and Mint, and they are decent, but not at windows level yet, some people have said manjaro, or this or that, etc. etc.

If a company would dev some version of Linux, free bsd, whatever into a true alternative to windows (works with everything and a neanderthal could use) I would gladly pay cash for it. I have been waiting since win10 came out.....................

This. Want to know how to kill Microsoft stone dead? Easy. Make one distro of Linux that does it all. As for choice, most users couldn't give a rat's ass about choice. Just make one distro that everyone can get behind and I will guarantee you that it will kill Microsoft stone dead within two to three years.

The Linux community has the "too many cooks in the kitchen" disorder. Everyone thinks that they can do it better whereas if they all decided to compromise and come together instead of running off like a child on a temper tantrum and forking the project all because someone did something they didn't like, Microsoft would be nothing more than a mere footnote in the history books.

Again, as I said before... the average user doesn't give a rat's ass about choice. They just want it to work. Has anyone really stopped to think about why Android is probably the most successful operating system next to Windows? Yeah... because they took the choice away from the user and just made it work.

I will show you mine for giggles, you will hate it. :)

I rather have everything here than trawl through the pages on the settings applet.

That's a cluttered mess.

My thoughts are that until the Linux community literally gets the word "choice" out of their vocabulary and makes an operating system that figuratively holds the user's hand at every single step of the way and treats the user as a complete idiot, Windows will still be king.

What if the new Windows is just..."Windows", no number. And to differentiate between versions, just add something like 22H2 or the build number.
