Been real happy with fedora linux for the past decade or so. If you need games it's not for you, but can recommend otherwise

I'd be on Linux if they'd get off their butts and support HDR.

Will Win11 actually be different, or is it just a new logo. I am literally just now getting my Win8 machine transferred to my Win10 machine. I still 100% detest Win10 borderless windows / flat theme.

The part about the games is not entirely accurate, either. The key is that games under Linux are best supported through Steam, and that seems to be constantly improved. In fact. I have given only a 500GB SSD on only one of my 3 computers to install Windows 10 on and that for gaming only. Otherwise, I use Ubuntu 20.04.2 exclusively, including for gaming, except for a game that seems to work only under Windows.

Whatever, getting bored of 10, and 8.1 and 7 are antique relics belonging in a museum. Whoever's still using them should get a reality check.

Updates never gave me an issue, and my whole experience with 10 has been more stable than with both 8.1 and 7 combined. 7 had the worst update agent I've ever seen, always breaking and giving out errors. 10 never forced updates down my throat and just asked me to install them whenever I wanted to. The best part is its update agent never broke either.

If telemetry is a problem with you, know that 7 has all the 10 "telemetry" backported onto it, so you're not safe. You're not safe on Linux distros either. If you're such a privacy freak, unplug your ethernet cord.

Looking forward to whatever the next OS will shape up to be.

Privacy, safety, stability and security are really good under Linux and yes, I am safe using Linux. (It is objectively more private and secure, on a local level, than Windows 10.) Concerning privacy, there is nothing freaky about it, it is basic commonsense and logic, especially in today's day and age.

By virtue of being on the Internet you're never going to have the kind of privacy that some people seem to want. Hell, I'd go so far as to say that simply living in the modern world and stepping out your door will lead to your private data being used in some way. Contrary to what some tinfoil hat wearing people think, we aren't going to be able go back to the days of when your personal data wasn't out there somewhere in the world. The cat's out of the bag, the horse is out of the barn, Pandora's Box has been opened.

I honestly do not care about what others think or do, I simply know what is objectively and practically more private and secure and go with that. I have made decisions and choices that strengthen and enhance that privacy and if others do not want to do that for themselves, that is on them. Let us not pretend that Windows 10 is either private or secure, at least on a local level, it simply is what it is.

Now, for my gaming only Windows 10 install, I eliminate everything that is not needed, run Chris Titus Tech's debloat scripts and use a standard user account for everything I do on it. And I only game in the Windows install for the games I have that I could not get to work under Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS installations.

I don't pretend to think it is either, I know the reality of running Windows. It is what works for me therefore I run it.

So many Windows haters in this thread STILL using Windows and refusing to go Linux, it's hilarious and pathetic at the same time.
There are four windows only programs that I have to use for research. If Linux versions existed windows would be gone. It still has a software legacy.

This. Want to know how to kill Microsoft stone dead? Easy. Make one distro of Linux that does it all. As for choice, most users couldn't give a rat's ass about choice. Just make one distro that everyone can get behind and I will guarantee you that it will kill Microsoft stone dead within two to three years.
and IBM now owns RedHat with fedora running as the free beta.

IBM was the company that made LibreOffice usable. (IBM Symphony)

They could do the same thing again.

If I had any inclination to leave Windows behind, it would have to be for a Mac. The Mac represents the best of both worlds, a mixture of open source and commercial software all rolled up into one neat little package that does everything that the average user would want to do right out of the box without even trying. I'd have Microsoft Office, OneDrive, iCloud, and a whole lot more that Linux just doesn't have. Oh, and it would pair well with my iPhone.

Jeez, so many linux haters in here. If you just took the time to learn it.... Nevermind. I used windows since 3.0. You remember that? Bet not. I used windows NT4, windows 2000, XP, 7, 8.1... and then comes this piece of ... called windows 10. I said I'd switch to linux before using it... and guess what? That's what I did. I will never install a copy of win10 on my system, ever. I actually started with DOS 3.2... remember that? We used to do just fine without windows. And we'll do just fine without it from now on.

Jeez, so many linux haters in here.
I wouldn't say that I'm a Linux hater, I'm just criticizing them for essentially not embracing the commercial software world. In fact, it seems that the Linux community is largely allergic to the very concept of commercial software and let's not even start with DRM which as much as I have to admit that I hate DRM, I understand that there's a need for it and that it's a necessary evil. If we lived in a world where people didn't steal crap left, right, and center maybe we'd not have a need for such DRM implementations but sadly, that's not the kind of world we live in.

This is where I think that the Mac and MacOS comes in the picture, it's UNIX at its heart but it has commercial software support for when you need it. It supports such DRM implementations so that you can watch media like TV shows and movies and listen to music. To date you can't get iTunes running on Linux and this is a must-have for me. Then there's cloud support for things like Google Drive and OneDrive and other such cloud storage services that I use on a daily basis. So yes, MacOS is pretty much my only choice if I were to get away from Windows.

Kubuntu would end it all. Once I discovered it and it's perfect start menu, I was hooked. Winehq wine will let you run most windows apps on it. It's perfect for multimedia work.
If you want an even better linux, then Archlinux. But you have to build it. I can, most can't. Install Kubuntu, you will never go back. Ubuntu itself is a pain. Just install Kubuntu.
Life can be so easy, but no one ever seems to want it that way.....

And there's the rub. Without support for cloud services, DRM implementations, and other such multimedia support it's a no-go for most users. Suffice it to say, the Linux community needs to get off their high horse already and embrace and support some of these necessary evils.

Actually a lot of those things are supported now. When's the last time you checked?
I just checked again, and all of those are supported under linux... any distro now.
So what now?
All Ubuntu distros allow dling 3rd party codec support ect. You can play anything, stream anything.
What's the issue?

Since when? Last time I checked the very concept of DRM is like a disease to most of the Linux community. And then we have Richard Stallman and his fanaticism to the fact that everything must be free software and he will not budge one damn millimeter on that concept. And where Richard Stallman goes, most of the Linux community follows for he's practically written the GNU bible.

Even firefox in linux allows drm... you have to check it in settings, but it's allowed.
And Canonical, which produces Ubuntu..... don't have the same concept as say FreeBSD.
Different paths.
DRM is allowed, it has to be. Simple. Go figure it out.

How? Richard Stallman's brain would to be ten days dead for him to allow that kind of poison on Linux. And for many in the Linux community, Richard Stallman might as well be the Linux god.

I don't know, but I can imagine that Richard Stallman is throwing a massive fit right now. He's probably screaming, cursing, and otherwise carrying on about how everything must be free and that it goes against every single principle that GNU stands for.

Never seen such an egregious case of double standards.

In the other thread pretty much everyone, including this website moderators, panned me for the fact that I insisted that NVIDIA had to support Windows 8.1 for as long as Microsoft supports it, now here, people stick to Windows 10 as if it's a good stable OS without a constant stream of feature updates which often break things left and right.

What is that you like about Windows 10 exactly? Horrible/inconsisten UI where many things have made very difficult to configure (i.e. advanced networking settings)? Feature updates each 6 months? The start menu with ads and useless junk? If not for D3D12, I'd have been running W8.1 instead of it.

I don't even want to talk about all the junk that W10 leaves in its place.

Not much, I really can't stand it myself but I'm man enough to realize that that's the only choice for commercial software support unless I go and buy a Mac.

Do I like it? Nope. But I swallow the bitter pill and deal with it. And then proceed to follow it up with a glass of bourbon to wash the horrible taste out of my mouth.

That is my main gripe with launchers and the like, Steam isn't so bad since it remains minimized in the systray but all the others when launching from a desktop icon for some reason need to maximized before running the game or program.
Not a single other launcher has to be maximized to launch a game. I know this because I don’t like them maximized.

What the most Windows 10 trash is, Microsoft forced hardware company like Intel or AMD to stop making new driver for their new product,,,, because of this, NEW laptop that come with dual core i3 or Celeron become much more trash than should it be, everything become slower, click take 1 minute before actually executed,... This is not problem if Microsoft dont end support for windows 7,,, even laptop that come 8 freaking years ago feel much responsive and faster even with slow HDD 5400rpm because WINDOWS 7

People who defended this crap OS in this sub, may never experience how awful this garbage run in celeron or dual core cpu + 5400rpm harddisk, im even give advise to my client if you dont have budget or your budget only get you a celeron based Laptop, you better buy old laptop with core i5 that cheaper and support windows 7, never buy new laptop with windows 10+ low end cpu and harddisk

Am I lucky that I never had issues with win10 since its public beta in 2015, except for some... how can I say… not particularly legal (XD) windows Store games? And that NONE of my customers with win10 clean installed on a SSD (after a secure erase if the SSD wasn’t brand new) had any issue with it?
Win10 runs like hot garbage on spinning rust drives, worse than old versions even when clean installed, and with them there’s an awfulk big probability of update failures, but using spinning rust drives for the OS is the worst decision ever (looking at ya, laptop manufacturers, that put spinning rust drives on most even middle-to-high-end laptops until the end of 2017).
