MSI's GP76 Leopard is a huge 17.3-inch desktop replacement laptop with a focus on gaming. Our review sample is powered by an Intel Core i7-10750H, which boosts up to 5 GHz, the GPU is a GeForce RTX 3070, and the screen is Full HD with 144 Hz.

The GP76 is this review is "last year" model. The current model is GP76-11UG with Core i7-11800H, RTX 3070(140 Watts) and FHD 240Hz LCD. It cost $2299 CAD.

I really don't like how TPU reviews laptop CPU and GPU performance. You can't assess that the 10750H has 'great performance' without comparing it to say the 5800H for example. There are too few data points (3 laptops) for TPU to make any assessment as to how a CPU stacks up to competing products. It would also be more helpful in the CPU and GPU benchmark sections to list the CPU/GPU, not solely the laptop name (have that in brackets afterwards).

Yes, it is listed in the test systems page, but it is a pain to have to keep referring back to get an understanding of what actual systems are being compared. Other sites do it better, and I know TPU can as well.

  • Gaming on the battery alone isn't great
  • No card reader
  • HD 720p webcam has poor image quality
This isn't a work/school laptop but a dedicated gaming laptop, so all these are trivial, imo.
Heck, my Asus laptop doesn't even have a card reader nor a webcam, and I don't miss them.
As for the battery, that is just a feature ;)

actually i feel bad, at least when you have something bigger you can expect more interface and 17.3 inch as mobile, congratulation to find the suitable case/backpack

Yes. And extremely excited about it too.

can't call it a dedicated laptop and it gets delegated as a Desktop Replacement because it can't really game without being plugged into the wall. As a Desktop Replacement, those things are important.

I'll take a look at what we can do better to meet your needs. At the same time, I'm not reviewing the actual CPU or GPU, but how MSI has put them together.

MSI actually makes several laptop backpacks that will work.

What a horrible review in so many ways. I guess TPU wanted the review money.

Are you diliberately trying to be a contrarian? Knock it off, Dave's review was spot-on. Just because you don't like what was reviewed doesn't mean Dave didn't do the usual great job reviewing it. Quit talking out of your bum...

The review is pretty bad. The bios part is way off. He mentioned no overclocking on the cpu, the 10750h can't overclock. It's a laptop processor and locked. He didn't mentioned if he pressed alt, control, shift, and f2 buttons he would unlocked the advanced bios that let's the user unlock the overclocking and many other advanced settings, even memory overclocking. Most msi laptops have that option.

I'm sorry the review doesn't meet your needs in that section.

Features shouldn't be hidden from the end user. If they are, they don't exist. You either advertise, or you don't and you miss out.

At the same time, I've done reviews over a decade now. Many samples are provided with "review guides", which cover the details a brand would like featured. It's up to the reviewer to follow through, should something be pointed out. I didn't leave a link to a retailer within the review (we tend to not do that here on TPU). Everything else is covered, and then I covered more stuff (of course, because that's what we do).

So I'll take a moment and point out that proper CPU "overclocking" on this model does require throttlestop, a TPU software, and such is the case of any (almost) laptop. That isn't BIOS overclocking. You'll find users here on TPU doing exactly this in several threads.

That's something worth writing a review/guide on all on its own. Thanks for the idea. :D

You dont need throttlestop to overclock this model laptop, its built into the Bios options by pressing some buttons and unlocks more options but I guess MSI didnt say that in their review guide.

And you know that how for hardware YOU'VE never handled? Not all MSI laptops have that functionality.
I've had nothing but MSI laptops for close to 3 years now starting with the GE73, and now with the ge75. My next upgrade was this model GP76 with the i7 11800h processor but I got a killer deal on a GE75 with a i9 10980hk and 2080 super. I had the GP76 with the 11800h for a week, it had the same bios options from the GE75 I still use, and almost the same options from the ge73 that I passed down to my son.

Now I just need to tame the heat this i9 is making.

That's nice. I've worked on many MSI laptops as the local BestBuy and Staples sell many of them but fail to provide quality service for same. The "advanced" BIOS option only seems to exist on certain models. It is not available on all.

The advanced bios only shows up if you press alt, control, right shift, then f2.

The key combo is NOT the same for all models of MSI laptops that have the feature and once again NOT ALL MSI laptop models actually HAVE that feature.

There are added BIOS options on all MSI laptops,? Yes. Do they help overclocking? only on the models with CPU and memory that support it. You've had the top-tier models that overclock better, but have the same chassis and same basic features. This one doesn't benefit from what's on offer and ThrottleStop works better. Not to overclock per se, but to undervolt, lower temps, and get better boost clocks.
